North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.
"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

"""For most people, either spontaneously or as a result of heavy indoctrination, really believe in all these things, they are true.So, even feeling so much anger towards their leaders, I realize that only by respecting the things they believe in,""" IIn fact... It's the same thing you can notice in Islamic extremists, in African tribes who believe in absurd things etc etc. But it's the same for Westerners !!! We believe that it is deeply right that there are people who have more wealth than an entire nation. we believe that it is right and normal that an entrepreneur who invoices millions can pay his workers 1400 euros a month. We believe it is normal that a dishwasher works 14 hours a day for 1000 euros, and a notary earns 6 thousand euros a month to sit and put signatures. Is it normal to pray to an imaginary being in the evening or to believe that a magical child was born 2000 years ago? Is it normal to go to church to hear the same words and precepts millions of times, from a stranger and written by a few crazy hundreds of years ago? What's the difference with Korean propaganda? It's exactly the same All this is absurd and unrealistic for me..I don't understand how most give it as normal and fair. Outside of the scientific facts, all cultures believe in meaningless things, I start from the human brain

The north Korean people, especially the young hate us. They refer to us as bastards. I've been watching a few of the newer released vids and they talk to students. You should hear what they say. It's bone chilling. The do projects and give oral reports and it always says a thing like"the American bastards must die" and "if we went to war we would win definitely, the American bastards will die and we will be victorious". That's not all. They teach them propaganda from the earliest age possible, and that's nearly impossible to turn around. If there was a war you'd be in danger of as young as teen years old children. They just don't know any better. I've been watching Yoenmi Park videos recently. She escaped NK. She's very interesting and knowledgeable. Are had a hard life getting to where she is now. I recommend looking her up.

Etherium Sky Films & Media quick question because I am planning on going myself in the future. how were you so......rebellious? like there's a few times you ignore the tour guides instructions of no pictures. everything I am reading on Google is telling me that is 15 years in a North Korean labor camp
@EtheriumSky
@EtheriumSky 8 жыл бұрын
haha rebellious? Nah, i don't think so. I did/do my best to treat people - as people. That's all. I live in a different reality than them - but i don't think i'm in any way superior b/c of that. There were moments I would've liked to but didn't film - those you don't see in the film obviously. As for Google - eh, don't trust it too much. I'm not saying it's not true, the rules/laws are crazy in NK, people have very challenging lives there - but still google mostly paints an over-simplified, generalized, one-sided picture presented mostly by people who have no firsthand knowledge or experience... That said, check out this recent doc called 'Under the Sun' - a different film on NK, very well and interestingly done.

+Whisper Turkey You should be. Part of the job of these "tour guides" is to resist any attempt to get them to soften up and deviate from the rules and Party line, as well as prevent any attempt by the Westerners to engage with regular citizens. Poor Jim had a soul, it seemed. If he didn't pay for it then, you can bet he paid for it after this documentary came out. The government of the DPRK is terrified of Westerners because they bring information that NONE of these people have ever heard of. The "tour guides" are actually all secret policemen, by and large, and have been heavily indoctrinated for YEARS on how to resist and respond to Western lies and provocations. That's their job. If they get soft, they get "reeducated". For what it's worth, if that's what really happened to Jim, then he suffered for the noble cause of truth and the eventual freedom of his people from censorship and lies.

Anyone else finds it strange that you don't see any pets around? I suppose it has to do with being unable to buy any kind of thing and the food rationing. Also, no people with disabilities or plain different. I wonder what do they do with children that aren't born "perfect". And by the way, those children performing at the school gave me the creeps a bit. Fantastic documentary.

I saw one dog during the trip, he was tied up behind one restaurant that i stopped at, in the middle of some forest. Seemed pretty weak but he also didn't seem worse of than (sadly) other animals in china, vietnam or elsewhere in the region. And in one of the english-language papers that they gave me on the plane they had this "article" about some woman who married a guy in a wheelchair. And she was essentially saying how wonderful he is and how it doesn't matter to her that he's in a wheelchair cause he's so great. The paper itself was pretty interesting to read through, it was sort of like a "North Korean" version of a gossipy magazine, except there the letters that the readers wrote them were not about their love issues but for example one letter was from some teenager whose school was visited by Kim Jong Un and the girl was writing to express how enlightened she felt after that and what not heh...

I'm ordinary person in south korea. not having any of interest to north but I'm quite shocked by their livings in all of the propagandas. here is the propaganda signs and songs I can understand. sorry about grammas, I'm not good at english. 07:26 '선군조선의 태양 김정은 동지 만세' 'all hail to the Kim Jung Un!, great leader of Chosun, like the sun' . Chosun is another name of north korea. 07:53 '위대한 령도자 김정은 동지 만세!' ' all hail to the great leader Kim Jung Un!'. but picture aside of the sign is Kim Il Sung. 08:15 '조선은 결심하면 한다!' 'Chosun make things happen what we decided.' 10:19 left paper said "new Kim Il Sung, Kim Jung Il statues sit at the department of defence". 10:19 right paper said "only strong millitary can keep the country prosper" "our party loves children". interesting. do not fold the newspaper. I didn't know that until today. 10:55 distance building's sign '로동신문'. north korea's major news paper name. run by the government. 11:51 TV subtitle. '"동무여 청춘을 조국에 바치자" "my comrade, give up our youth for the country". looks like karaoke's millitary propaganda song. 13:43 14:19 "혁명의 성산 백두산, 김정일". "holy mountain Paektu, starting point of revolution, Kim Jung Il. written in 1992/2/16". mountain Paektu also specially treated in south korea. 17:21 "어데가나 잊지 못할 전우들이여" "my comrade, I will never forget you". karaoke propaganda. 18:17 at 12 o'clock, clockwise, "자주 평화 welcome 친선" "self-indefendence peace welcome friendly" 20:33 north korea folk song. a pretty girl go out for water and meet people, they wanna girl to sing, she sing a song with shy. can't find any propaganda. 21:26 '위대한 령도자 김정은 동지의 선군혁명령도를 충성으로 받들자' 'serve revolution order given by great leader Kim Jung Un' 22:05 '위대한 령도자 김정은 동지 만세!" "all hail to the great leader Kim Jung Un!" 22:26 '경애하는 김정은 동지를 따라 백두의 행군길을 꿋꿋이 이어가자' 'follow the beloved leader Kim Jung Un, passing through the Paektu marching road". means follow their country's spirit but I don't know how to explain it in english. 22:32 "선군조선의 태양 김정은 장군 만세!" "all hail to the general Kim Jung Un, the sun of the millitary based country, Chosun". 23:04 "위대한 어버이 김일성 동지는 ?????" "great father of all people, Kim Il Sung is ????" 25:31 north korea folk song. means goodbye but hope that we will see you again soon. 29:53 can't understand lyrics but one thing is sure, that's not a child song. they sing a Kim Jung Il as their parent. 31:50 song that three kid sing means I love my father and mother more than anything in the world. very common child song also known in south korea. but looks like their father, mother means 'dear leader'. 33:40 I can't hear his lyric. I never heard such rythm, maybe only known song in north korea or very very old song. 39:00 Arirang melody. koreans first folk song. all korean knows this song. no propaganda, no political message. 40:20 north korea propaganda song. praise their country, party, Juche sasang, leader. 43:26 signstone '강성대국' tells 'most powerful country in the world". 43:57 '선군정치' 'millitary and party are first'. weird. all signstons tell propaganda not a single village name shown. 44:30 no. south korean think seven is lucky number. three? not much like seven. I thought three is propaganda thing, connected to Kim's family. 44:45 I sing, I dance, I smile... cute child song. I never heard that song but everyday I heard similar melody when I'm their age. 52:01 '우리 당과 인민의 최고 령도자 김정은 동지 만세' 'all hail to Kim Jung Eun, the leader of our party, our people' 52:01 '일심단결을 더욱 강화하자' 'all people, all together' 52:01 '위대한 장군님의 선군사상을 빛나게 실현하지!' 'great leader's millitary first idea, we can make it happen!'. '결사옹위' 'to keep the country and leader, we can anything pay for it' 57:30 propaganda song. praise their party. equal their party like a flower, beatiful scenery. about Juche Sasang, I heard that it is their constitution also their religion and everything. rumor has it, woman must choose their hair style in menu shown in 35:42. not allowed any others. menu is controlled by government. mens are worse, less than ten styles, only short hair cut allowed. pity all tourist, all children, all customers in barber shop, all people in bowling alley and all people in this picture. maybe they are farmers, workers or someone never be allowed standing there couple of hours ago. thank you. thank you very much for generosity that you and your firends showing to kids. thank you. all of the people in north korea starving, 5 years ago, secretly filmed real life in north shook the south korea. keyword 북한 꽃제비(beggar, especialy orphant kid). kid playing the guitar remind that.

Oh, before I forget it!!!!!! Thanks for those translations and times, the amount of propaganda is staggering and I know that the west is having the same, yet it is not like I can tell what is propaganda and what is not, what is true and what is not, or whether I get the whole story. In a western proxy war, in Congo last year (2015) death number 20 million fell, as a former career officer in the army, I came close to different information than the News was spreading, news that seemed rather important, yet was never broadcasted. In Europe most do not understand that the number of refugees from Africa is caused directly by people fleeing from the violence caused by our own governments, my nation, a tiny one is the number 6 arms dealer on this planet. My old army rifle, FAL, now serves some warlord in Africa to whom it was sold, or given.

You are an excellent film maker and your edit was far superior than that of BBC, RT corporations who obviously operate on vast budgets and for that you should in all sincereity be proud!

This was by far the best documentary I've seen on DPRK. You focused on the people more than most others, it felt like I was getting to know what the people are like rather than how they are portrayed as sheep in other films. And I must say the art on the MP3 player was quite touching. I hope one day that the country becomes more open and prosperous, and would love to visit when that time comes.

You said what I was thinking. I'm so sick of watching videos of people who go to DPRK and treat the citizens they meet almost like monkeys in a zoo. There's one particular video that gets my blood boiling where these people of a tour were lucky enough to have someone comfortable enough to show them their new smartphone, and showing how it has games and a camera, and the English people are snickering and laughing. Really reminded me of bullies from high school.

I loved the documentary until the end (5min). (sorry gunna rag) When he started making his final culminating speech it was insanely positive considering the state of their nation. People are being tortured, murdered, kidnapped in prison camps, the people are dying of starvation, NK citizens blame all their problems on the west. In north Korea their is a great damm that had been built by the great leader and it broke and nearly flooded every single producing farm leading to their mass starvation. But will blame west. The capitalism quote threw me for a loop "there is no capitalism" he said this so positivity like it was good. So I am really confused to why...getting rations not being able to do what you want..seems to be displayed in a positive light... In NK the only want it for war so they may "die together." - said in the testimonials of many NK defectors. Also I am not sure what the director believes in when he shows the video of the englishman on the news. He seems to also play a blame game on western countries and SK and JAP. When the regime and the great leaders are truly to blame for the aggression of the NK. I'm am responding poorly to a well made and i think rather brave young directors documentary right now I know. Korea can not open up. That would unravel the entire regime, there is no hope for the country until their is a change in power. Rather than being depressed seeing the thousands of koreans in their art show (ari-something Sorry!) the director was amazed and impressed... Those people do not a get a day off in their life. They did all that for you... can't you see this isn't what they want to be doing...Kim Jung Il loved the arts and theatre and demanded this from his people. NK is not modern you saw the most modern parts of the country and that's it. It is a show. Not tainted by LCD screens doesnt make this country great. It is tainted by propaganda and I know the director knows this SO i can't understand why his ending reaction is so positive for the miserable, starving, persecuted people of NK. Other than that great documentary. Cinematography was spot on! you are super brave for asking all those questions. be careful though you don't wanna get anyone in trouble! You are a genuine talented dude!

Katie B im totally agree with you. I ve noticed that the end speech is very dissapointing, especially when we are talking about the future of north korea. Something wrong with this picture. Iphones ?? WTF ! When this guy is saying 10 words about Iphones, in his little poor culminating speech, some family prisoned for generations just then losts mother, father, which were murdered in prison camps. Its totally normal in NK because North Korea is a hell on the earth. The government is the big mafia, which actually are drug dealers. We cant just say a word about future of NK. Its a lost world. Maybe the trains are working, people are talking between each other, but the background is a massive holocaust.

Maybe I have to be literal: when you go to a different country (very much from yours), you enter a different culture, and - whether you disagree or not - you HAVE TO RESPECT IT, and your duty is to be aware of certain aspects of it, at least the most important ones. Regarding a communist regime - whether you like it or not - people are under so much control by the governmet they ARE KILLED for anything!, especially if they are suspect to give information to a foreigner, even more if that person is from the USA! Come on! Etherium whatever, you DID NOT KNOW THAT!! I believe you did not. Because you´re taking such a paternalistic/imperialistic attitude through all the documentary; and when the Jim issue happens, you just skip it away as if it was just another monument you pass by in your tour. This is so obvious, my first question implied all this and more. Sometimes you have to do some thorough research beforehand, as well. There are very good history books everywhere. But Jim is DEAD if he was lucky, or "working" in one of their camps, if he was not; together with the rest of his family "by association". Nothing new, most of us do not know. And please, don´t ask for money for any of your "leasure trips".

***** Exactly. When I went to the DPRK the Korean guides appointed by the North Korean government spent hours talking about the evil deeds of the "American Imperalists" and other propaganda. Their rules are quite strange, but I found the relationship between you as a tourist and the North Korean guides becomes much friendlier when you abide by the rules and respect their beliefs. They're not out to change your views, so you don't need to argue with their views.

They seemed like really nice people, but the governments strict policies sadly doesn't allow them to open up much due the severe punishment for doing so. It was a really great documentary. It showed me a lot about the North Korean people and some of their culture outside of their "Great Leader". Your documentary was very good, kudos for that. BUT... As several others have pointed out - your naïve approach might very well have gotten your tourguides sent to prison camps (usually for the rest of their life when the issue has to do with "National security") or in the worst case, even executed. I understand that your intentions were good, but you really should have thought a bit about it before you pushed the boundaries so far. What is nothing in a country that's free, in North Korea might mean death or life long imprisonment. You should have gathered more information on the country you were about to visit - then you would have gotten strict warnings about endangering your guides, since it's a known fact that many have gotten in very serious trouble due to not "being able to control the western visitors". Many guides, I'm sure, try to be accommodating to the extent they can, but that shouldn't be revealed by the person filming/taking photos. You should have protected them and not mentioned anything about what they let you do and not. You made matters even worse by actually showing them - on camera - western stuff like KZbin, and you even told outright that you lended your mp3 to the guy. You do know that it's strictly forbidden, by law, for North Koreans to watch/listen to any kind of foreign media? It's a crime mashed up in the huge mess of things that are considered treason. And the final blow was when you said that he liked the music and that you hoped he'd gotten some new insights and ideas. I understand your intention of trying to open doors and unite people over boundaries, to exchange knowledge, culture etc. - but you also have to understand that North Korea is nothing like any other country. (Or, at least most.) It's perfectly fine that you had these talks and showed your stuff - but you should NOT have included that in the doc. I hope the guides are fine and that they have only gotten reprimanded and scolded - but I seriously doubt it.

@Fronika- (yt won't let me reply to you directly! annyoing). I would love to and have been thinking much about visiting and filming in Israel/Palestine. In fact, i met with the director of the Palestinian film '5 broken Cameras' last week (look it up, he tells a pretty impressive story, he was nominated for an Oscar last year) and I felt even more moved by his story, making me want to do something even more. But really it comes down to funding. It's not enough for me to just show up and shoot, the conflict there is pretty complex and in fact my knowledge of it is somewhat minimal. Nonetheless, if any opportunity comes up, i would certainly love to visit, to film, to get to know the people and stories there firsthand.

Thank you much for the good words. Yes, during the kids performance i had an internal mini breakdown. Ethical battle was going on in my head - do i film this or does filming just make me an indirect accomplice? And here, they actually subtly encouraged filming. The few foreigners that were there watching mostly had tears their eyes and probably felt just like me. I spent the whole afternoon that day in my room trying to make sense of it all. That said - i wouldn't use the words 'evil horrors' and i myself surely did not experience anything remotely that extreme... A month ago I was on the Thai/Myanmar border, witnessing the miserable/helpless fate of the Burmese refugees there. Just couple weeks ago I snuck into Myanmar's Chin state and met some amazing locals in this near completely unknown part of the world, living under constant military presence, with pretty high tensions. Now I'm in Bangladesh, reading about bloggers getting macheted to death minutes away from where I'm staying, out in the open, for practically nothing. Not defending NK by any means and i'm very aware of the news and attrocity reports etc, but I guess my point is that the 'evil horrors' you mention are relative - each person, each region, each community worldwide faces different horrors, in one way or another - i just do my best to stay impartially informed, give up on hasty judgement and whenever possible, help in any, even smallest way - every person in the world can do that much if they want to. Ok, end of sermon, i talk to much ;p

Why can't we all be together? These people are no different than me or you. The bowling alley scene where Moe missed all the pins,when he was walking back he had a hint of laughter/embarassement. I've seen that exact look from my friends while bowling. The montage starting @51:30 was incredibly moving, being able to see that these are regular people, trying to survive like everyone else. We are all one, separated by grudges and ignorance. We live in fear of each other, but do we know why?

This is a proper example on how documentaries are supposed to be made, with full transparency, open mind and a desire to learn and comprehend, rather than criticise and discard. I sat through the entire video in awe of the capabilities of the NK people. And I totally agree with you. If they were introduced into the modern world, if ethnic, politic, social and economic barriers broke, North Korea would most likely be one of the top powers in the entire world. Keep up the great work. -An amateur filmaker.

Ethnic barriers? Are you brain dead? Immigration would kill North Korea. Go away with your multiculturalism degeneracy shit. We all know what happens to countries which open up to the west: they get full of western degeneracy.

Oh my God, that's what I call quality content. Keep up the great job, bro. PS: the only thing I disliked was that stereotypical communist font with Russian letters. Just remember that whenever a Russian viewer sees it, you make them cringe. It's not offensive, it's just considered incredibly stupid here.

North Korea seems to be the asian equivalent of Cuba in the region, but more reclusive. The people are hungry not only for the lack of food which is a way for a totalitarian regime to undermine the people's strength for insurrection, but also hungry for new ideas and concepts. They appear to be industrious and resourceful, and their younger generation look well educated, although I fear highly indoctrinated. The cult of personality to the supreme leaders is almost pathological and very shocking by western standards.The way the tourist guides portrayed themselves as faithful lackeys left me bewildered, but then I remembered, we have also idealized and idolized our leaders and their ideologies all along the way, so sickening. Another distressful aspect I've learned from this documentary is the north Korea's common man apparent ignorance of modern world cultural gyrations in terms of current affairs, literature, music, art and technology. That entrenched ostracism could be a burden to progress for a country that quietly covets it. A burden that must be carried for various generations, once the regime is out of the equation. North Korea is definitely suspended in an undefined alternative time frame. Their architecture frozen in an awkward regression of an already far behind futuristic 1950s, is basically featureless of any desire to strive for beauty. Ugliness is not an overall adjective every country has its niceties, but this country is not well embellished even by a regime that aims for excellency, they hardly have any art painting hanging in any wall. Highly noticeable was how barren the metropolitan landscape is with those colorless dull looking buildings, almost resembling a Chernobyl phantomish retro style. Honestly, I will never undestand the reasons why any government leadership wants to keep its people in the dark, the compulsively man controlling men, that's an evolutionary trait we homo sapiens need to overthrow and rapidly. Some desolation could have settled down in the structures, but the people wants to shine, that's obviously a potent contrast. Finally, I was moved by one of the lackey's final address, he opened a little bit. Maybe his soul will be delivered from history one day, when his people finally join us in the continuously freedom defining world. Mankind will then listen and learn the intimate accounts of one hundred years experience from the north Korean people with this retarded flickering Kim regime. Thus, helping us avoid any putrid scent of any tyranny that may arise thereafter. A tyranny well planted in the hearts, well conceived in the minds of those, who will ever dare to think; they are the ones who only know what's best for us.

+TheMoonchild1969 Your post was interesting and excellently written - but you should split such big chunks of text into smaller paragraphs - it's hard to read otherwise :) About the guides - they aren't all that faithful, I suspect. But considering what their punishments will be if they DON'T act like that - they can't do it any other way. They aren't precisely guides, in our sense of the word, rather "guards", making sure that the tourists don't venture nor snoop around. Unfortunately, I think these guides fell into VERY serious trouble due to the carelessness of the documentary maker. He was far too naïve.

To be fair to Moe & the other tour guides they are under pressure we could never even fathom in getting their "performance" just right. When you confronted him I think his complete 180 was as much respect as well as fear. The people in that nation walk a tight rope everyday & I have so much empathy & respect for them. It's not their fault their country is as messed up as it is 🙏🏼

'The dear leader visited here' 'The dear leader visited there' 'The dear leader visited this factory 50 times' I can't blame the Kim family for visiting everywhere to be honest, they're stuck in a country where they themselves don't have much to do because of the rules they themselves set up, unless they do have the entertainment in their government homes and just want to hop onto a plane

If the Tzarist and Soviet Union were called the "Third Rome" as many historians consider Russia to have taken up the Roman crown after the Byzantine Empire fell, North Korea is the continuation of the Soviet state and can very well be called the Fourth Rome. Everything in North Korea is very reminiscent of Imperial Rome, from architecture to it's sculptures and monuments everywhere.
