When it comes to respect (including sales respect) you treat equally regardless if it is a new or old client. What I would do (this is me) before I sell the watch to whoever shows up in the Shop, I will reach out to the guy over the phone to tell him, hey we have a client with money in hand that wants to buy it, I just wanted to let you know, we can find you same watch for same price in a few days. I've been in the sales side and the client side as well. We can't judge a new client just because someone before came and ask for a watch and then ghosting you and disappeared.

When you’re dealing with a highly desirable commodity is best to do your move right then and there then think about it. I’ve seen it at least twice when I went to go buy cars, and I immediately moved on it and then the next thing I’m looking over my shoulder and somebody comes up asking about the car I just bought, the salesman has tell him the car is no longer available because this just been sold.

Cash is king but I think I would at least give the courtesy to the customer of explaining the situation saying I have a guy here ready to move on this watch right now but because I offered it to you first if you want to go ahead I’m going to need an immediate deposit. If you didn’t video tape everything you could’ve just said we made a mistake that watch was already sold but how long is it going to take you to get another black date sub? An hour? It’s not like it’s some super rare high end piece you can’t get another of I think honesty is the best policy here most people would understand but just selling the watch to someone else without even making the first guy aware would t be a good look
