🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:07 *🤔 Ethics are rules provided by an external source, governed by professional and legal guidelines, dealing with gray areas in value judgments.* 01:36 *💡 Morals are an individual's own principles regarding right and wrong, not written in legal guidelines but based on personal beliefs.* 02:04 *🌍 Descriptive ethics describe behavior, while prescriptive ethics guide behavior.* 03:32 *📝 Descriptive ethics study what people think is right, while normative ethics determine what should be considered morally right or wrong.* Made with HARPA AI

Objective Morality & Ethics: Create no harm, loss or damage for your fellow Man/WoMan and if you do (life happens, accidents happen), make it right. That covers just about everything and it's simple enough for all humans to comprehend.

Not all ethics are legal. The code of conduct of the Italian mafia says that the code of silence is ethical. Not legal. I agree completely with this video.

This is a shallow, modern description. Morality is the set of existing community standards of behavior which may have arisen from any number of causes or combination of causes. A community may have one moral standard that arose from the dictates of a monarch, another from the persuasion of a "wise man," another from the aftermath of a disaster, another as the result of contact with a weaker community, another as a result of contact with a stronger community, et cetera. Morality is the community standards of behavior that exist. An ethic, OTOH, is always a rationally determined set of principles for behavior with a particular end good set as a goal of that behavior. I am emphasizing that morality is more of a descriptive concept, reflecting the community's prevailing standards of behavior, regardless of their origin-whether from tradition, authority, or circumstance. Morality, in this view, is a reflection of what is, shaped by history, power dynamics, or social influences. On the other hand, I see ethics as prescriptive and rational, involving a deliberate, reasoned process aimed at achieving a specific "end good" or goal. This suggests ethics are more universal or objective in nature, focused on guiding actions according to a logical framework or set of principles that lead to a desirable outcome. This perspective makes a useful distinction between the empirical nature of morality (what a community does) and the normative nature of ethics (what individuals or societies ought to do based on reason and intended outcomes).

Objective Morality & Ethics: "Create no harm, loss or damage for your fellow Man/WoMan and if you do (life happens, accidents happen), make it right." That covers just about everything and it's simple enough for all humans to comprehend regardless of education level. Subjective Morality & Ethics: - I do what's best for me, regardless of who gets hurt, harmed or damaged in the process. No regard for others, just oneself.

Isn't Ethics the study of morality? A code of conduct contains norms, not 'ethics'. These norms are derived from underpinning values. Morality is the accepted body of norms, values and attitudes in a society. Ethics studies morality by defining certain norms (descriptive ethics) or it explains when certain norms have changed or ought to change due to shifted values in morality (prescriptive ethics). It looks like the speaker mixes up the difference between norms and 'ethics'.

Not really. Your definition of Ethics is really more of a deontology code.

Yes, u're right. I studied a quite number of textbooks about Ethics and yes, ethics is a personal thing, ethics is to know what is right and wrong, morals are made by human in their quest to control the environment. Morals are tending more on the law of society. Therefore, ethics could not be enforced but morals could.

Thank you. Descriptive ethics is one of the most ridiculous ideas. Any ethics must be based on, and feed into, morality, and of course, must be prescriptive. That’s why we ended- up in a situation where a person can get away with an immoral conduct ‘Oh, but I did abide by the law/ code of practice’. This ‘descriptive ethics’ should not be called ‘ethics’ as it could, at best, just serve as a way of studying different codes of ethics, for example. It’s just an instrument which is not even necessarily useful. What’s the point of taking about, and analysing, ethics of one doesn’t actually act morally?
