This is the second of Joseph Lamb's rags to be published by Stark. Following the immense success of 'Sensation' (1908), 'Ethiopia' is a lesser known but no less beautiful rag. It can be considered a first step in a different direction for classic ragtime and a glimpse of things to come for Lamb. His compositions would prove to be unique in the genre of ragtime, with grandiose melodies, rich harmonies and colorful flourishes.
I find Ethiopia to come alive at a briskier tempo than that at which most people play it. If you look up on YT, most if not all other interpretations are at a slower tempo.
To me, all rags by Lamb are somewhat demanding to play, with melody lines containing tight harmonies, and often requiring right-hand jumps. Making his music sound like... well, music can be challenging.
I am a self-taught pianist and I've been playing for five years now.
