The Battle of Dogali is another famous battle and there is actually a Dogali Museum in Rome. The reason why Ethiopia defeated Italians was because of how the country was organised and structured. While other communities in Africa were busy working against each other and collaborating with colonizers Ethiopians United under the leadership of Menelik and took the battle to the Italians. Ethiopians rallied behind their leaders while in other parts of Africa communities were used by the colonizers to fight each other and enabled colonisation. The same tactics they used during slavery. Ethiopians were organised and worked together towards a common purpose something that was lacking in other parts of Africa. It was in the battle of Adowa that Italians were defeated and humiliated by Ethiopians because of their unity.

Ethiopia is one of the land locked countries in Africa. In fact Ethiopia was not colonized unlike the other African countries during the scramble for Africa.The Ottoman Turks controlled the port city of Massawa in 1557 in the present day Eritrea for over 300 years.The Ottoman Empire was declining and had rivals in the Middle East and left the area to Egypt and it was during this time that the Berlin conference (1884-1885)held to divide Africa between them. Italy 🇮🇹 replaced Turkey 🇹🇷 and gained full control of Eritrea in 1869.

In fact King Menilik had a hard time to access the weapons he needed to defend his territory and people because the Europeans put sanction on Ethiopia in favour of Italy. He didn't mention any of the gallantry and bravery displayed by the heroine Ethiopians. The bravery of Queen Taitu, the wife of King Menilik who commanded thousands of cavalry and participated in the war, in one instance she is credited for planing to cut the Italian access to water supply and force them to came out of their bankers and surrender. The second Italo Ethiopian war began in 1935, Italy took full control in 1937, although there were rebel groups that had their own territory Italy couldn't invade those lands until we fully cleared them out of ethiopia in 1941, with the help of british. And the resistance defeated italy to a level that they protected some parts of Ethiopia. Google belay zeleke, bekele weya, arbegnoch(other soldiers that fought against italy occupation) they lasted until their king came back with british support. Those heroes(rebels) were able to protect lands and also fought alongside british and took back Ethiopia.

They didnt tell the full story. In 1935, Italy launched a second invasion, which ended in 1937 with an Italian victory and the annexation of Ethiopia to Italian East Africa. Ethiopia became an Italian colony until the Italians were driven out in 1941 by the British Empire, with assistance from Ethiopian arbegnoch guerillas. When I hear people say Ethiopia was never colonized I know it sounds good for Ethiopians, but its not the truth. Not to mention, that Eriteria was also a part of Ethiopia and the Itialians colonized the area area and held it before it's name was changed to Eriteria. The fact that Ethiopia was never colonized is just not TRUE!

There is a difference between colonizing and occupying. Ethiopia was occupied by the Fascists for about 5 years. The fascists used chemical weapons and were armed with very advanced weapons. However, they were never able to control the country completely because the resistance fighters, “ Arbegnas” never let them. Yes, the British helped Ethiopian fighters and Haile Selassie’s army during the 2nd World war. We have to tell history as it happened. You can’t rewrite it. And yes, Eritrea was part of Ethiopia. But unfortunately because mostly of Italy’s colonialists, it’s now a separate country. It’s not military power that makes you victorious. It’s the will of the people. History has taught us many times. Some people can’t just accept that black people with inferior military equipment defeated a well equipped European army.
