When you grow up in such ethnic families you just hear the same preface to everything the adults say. When I was you age blah, blah, blah... Whatever they did or had 'When I was you age' seemed to always be much less, a much harder etc life than their second generation migrant kids in Australia. One day, as a kid, I got sick of hearing their usual 'When I was you age' routine parents and their visiting friends would start on, when they got annoyed with how we kids behaved. I just stood up and asked them, point blank, if they ever had anything good or had any fun, ever 'When I was you age"and got told I was too smart for my own good and to shut up you face, because, when I was you age, I never ask questions and have bit of rispetto... But I persisted, trying a different angle. Like' Did you enjoy yourself when you was my age? '. The answer I got was odd. It was' No. That's a why I breed you... '. I suddenly felt very special, so important, as their child. Here were these poor miserable people who never had anything good' When I was you age'. And then I was born and I saved them from a life of such misery, hardships, deprivation, work etc etc. But when I tried to explain to them all just how lucky they were that kids like us were born, who saved them from the misery of the terrible lives, they all seemed to have 'when I was you age', for some unknown reason, they just flew off into a rage about how kids ruined their life because 'when I was you age blah, blah, blah...' Now I know Australian parents also did their version of the ethnic 'When I was you age', which becomes 'When we were young blah, blah, blah', followed by a litany of what they never had when they were young, that kids have nowadays. But ethic parents are really hard to beat when it comes to this 'good hard old days' routine. So annoying. It would come up at every family Sunday gathering. They'd start talking about business or something, then look at us kids and out it would come. When I was you age, I owned 2 shops, I make so much money I support my family when I was just 9 years old, blah, blah... There was also the female version of 'When I was you age'. It went something like 'When I was you age, I was a big woman with big breast. I feed all my family myself because my mother too old... I have plenty milk....Big woman, big mama...' Now, I tried to do the math, for the ages etc, as something didn't seem to quite add up right. For starters, how could she have all this breast milk to feed an entire family herself, when she wasn't even of marrying age, let alone breeding age, as I though that, like our farm cows, they needed to be mated with a bull to get pregnant before there was any milk possible, to feed everybody, like these big mamas bragged about.. I tried to explain how it didn't make sense but they just made a few threatening hand gestures and said 'you shut up you face. You too young. You no understand life. You no understand nutting...' They were right. I understood nothing because none of their bullshit made any sense to me. So I would just roll my eyes, take a deep breath and sigh as soon as I heard 'When I was you age blah, blah, blah...' Ah, the joys of growing up in an ethnic home trying to cope with straddling two cultures...

Annemarie May your so right, it was a pain trying to fit into 2 cultures as a 1st generation "aussie kid" from "ethnic parents". Of course we couldn't understand. Born and bred in the new land we just wanted to fit in with our peers!
