Etho MindCrack SMP - Episode 72: Pyrotechnics

MindCrack is a server Guude started in late 2010. It is a private (whitelisted) server. We are currently not accepting applications.
BdoubleO requested a little while ago that I rig up some sort of firework setup for the arena, so that's what we work on today.

Hi Etho, a cool thing to add to the arena are dispensers with water in the roof, so when you turn them on, you can have a waterfight with boats !

You definitely can! You add a fire charge when creating the firework star and it creates a "Large ball" rather than the typical "Small ball." You can also add diamonds, mob heads, and glowstone for different effects. The height is determined by the number of gunpowder added along with paper and a firework star later. :)

Dispensers filled with items are fairly comparable to a radioactive isotope. Each time X amount of time passes, half of the dispensers are emptied completely (decay). So, each time X amount of time passes, the rate at which the fireworks go off is cut in half.

Nice! I think 8 would be better, and I would also like to see some fireworks added in the middle next to the beacon. It would give it a more 3 dimensional look when they're all going off. Great video etho!

Etho, I think for the bedroom, you should have the beds and then when they leave the room pressure plates are activated to keep it closed to make sure they lost the battle and can't escape. Also, for the fireworks you should try to add more effects like bigger size and twinkle etc. This will grab the attention more and add more visibility to the fire works.

Hey Etho something cool you could do is set up the "armories" like your storage room in your single player LP where the pistons only reveal the chests you want the player to have access to. Keep up the great videos!

for the respawning thing, you can put pressure plates one block below the bed the bed would not be obstructed, but the player would fall on the pressure plate and activate it . you can also put a piston that uses a block to obstruct a second space beside the bed the player would be able to sleep in the bed and wake up on the normal block, but when the piston is activated (game on) the player would spawn above the pressure plate

Hey Etho, First off, I'd like to say I love your vids, and now I would like to make a quick suggestion about the player detecting win condition you mentioned. You could have the bed force spawn them on one block, and then the only way out would be to walk over a pressure plate which then detects that the player has died. Not super clean, but it should work. Thanks!

An awsome thing you could do is to put several dispensers in a ring under the arena, so that in some fights, the players can come in disarmed and have to run to the center to get geared up.

Etho, put some firework dispensers around the inner lip of the roof! Make them the large ball ones and make them shoot at the end, after the circle has gone around, or less often during the random show!

If you put a dispenser behind a wall and have it facing you behind the wall with blocks surrounding it on all sides you can dispense things through walls That may look nice Etho!

When you do the armory, in the place where you put the firework controls, you should make a control panel for the armory and have chests with the item frames, but have it set so if you want the person to use wood swords instead of normal wood swords. Or a dispenser. Also seperate it into two sides, so that it will be in two teams.

Etho to get it that when they spawn they would trigger something make it that everyone sleeps in a bed that only has one spawn block. Have a wooden pressure plate next to it and a and make it that an item would be dispensed and hit the corner of the of pressure plate and their spawn space. That way when they respawn they will pick up the items and an inverted signal would fire off. Just make it so the switch that starts the game dispenses the item. You can use use it as a five minute counter:D

Not sure if this would work but it's almost like the trip wire idea anyways. Have a pressure plate in the room that is attached to some sort of t-flip flop that will on the first press give the player an ender pearl to get though the fence opening and possibly other items for the battle. Then when they die and respawn the second press of the pressure plate will let them out the back and up to view the fight, and also know that that player is now out.

You could out the beds in a separate room and make the exit so you have to step on the pressure plate so it won't obstruct the bed.

Hey Etho. For the winner detection you could place torches on 9 blocks around the bed so the player always spawns at the same place. then you could put a loose minecart next to a powered rail there so that the player pushes it on the rail everytime he respawns. I tried it by myself and if you don t jump(else add a block above players head) it works everytime.

the timing seems fine...You also should have a large creeper face firework shoot out of the middle of the arena where the Beam is. Not sure if fireworks can fire through glass however. A post there might not look bad either instead of the glass.

Etho! I think the firework display may need more fireworks! They seemed a bit "Spread Thin" and I think there should be some more dispensers which only fire when a general fireworks display occurs, and not when you press the button, or announce a winner, so that there is more to look at when you hit the lever.

With the random firing system, you could put the same system somebody did with the egg prank where it would randomly fire eggs into your base, except with fire charges to make the battle more interesting. It could also be easily concealed.

Etho, if you want to check when a player respawns from a bed, you have to do the item on a pressure plate trick as anything other than air will count as an obstruction.

you could detect a winner by making contestants sleep in bed prior to fighting, and using tripwires to detect the losers respawns. For multiple contestants you could use AND gates.
