My friend and I were amateur volcanoligists back in the 1950's to 1978. My friend often went up alone on Etna and slept the whole night up there. He mentioned that even up there in the middle of the night, he would be disturbed by the odd rat. For me, my expertise was on the island of Stromboli, and Vulcano. What we did so long ago now, you wouldn't be able to do today, as everything is controlled along with mass tourism. Paradise lost!
