For reference, if you care: Etrian Odyssey - original game, came out on the DS Etrian Odyssey II - Heroes of Lagaard - sequel to EO, came out on the DS Etrian Odyssey III - The Drowned City - sequel to EO 2, came out on the DS Etrian Odyssey IV - Legends of the Titan - sequel to EO3, came out on the shiny new 3DS Etrian Odyssy Untold - The Millenium Girl - a Remake of the original Etrian Odyssey for the shiny new 3DS, featuring a new Story Mode, remixed Labyrinth levels, and new monsters (among a ton of other updates) Etrian Odyssey Untold II - The Fafnir Knight - a Remake of Etrian Odyssey II for the 3DS, doing all the same things for EOII that Millenium Girl did for EO I. Etrian Odyssey V - Beyond the Myth - sequel to EO4 for the 3DS, a return to the "classic" gameplay of the series after the two Untold Remakes. Etrian Odyssey Nexus - EO's swan song (3DS again), featuring the longest Labyrinth ever, and a SLEW of returning characters, classes, levels, and features. An "Etrian Odyssey Greatest Hits", if you will. Sadly, we'll never get an Untold III for poor Drowned City now that the 3DS is "dead". :(

Oh boy. So... Scatter About is a theme that has existed for as long as Etrian Odyssey exists. It's always sounded the exact same, with just some minor instrument changes between later games. It's used for all superbosses. Whenever it starts, you just know you've angered something you really shouldn't have. Fun fact: this song plays in every Etrian Odyssey game *except* Etrian Odyssey 5. And this has an interesting implication considering that game is also the only one without Etrian Odyssey's signature superbosses, instead getting other ones.

The complete chaos of this song works so well for the complete chaos of its associated fights

Woo, this is a classic of the EO series!! I think it’s featured in every game with slight variations except the fifth, since it’s the theme of the three elemental dragons that are post game bosses and increase your guild member’s level cap (but EO5 decided to change the bosses for that). That opening is very iconic for me, and the spiraling section really encapsulates the feeling of the situation falling apart as the boss rips up your party :V The confusion and tenseness do a great job making you feel the overwhelming threat from these bosses. I love the title as well, since it really makes me imagine my guild scattering about, trying to dodge the boss’s attacks and struggling to come up with a strategy to take it down. It’s interesting since the song does have a very mechanical and electronic feel to it, but it actually features these huge primordial dragons. Most of the 3DS games sound pretty similar to EO2U’s version, which is I think is the most recent rendition of the song. The super arrange was actually made around the same time as the original EO2 DS game, so it’s older than the Untold remake! I’ll note that Etrian Mystery Dungeon has its own version titled “To Fall is Fair” instead, also a very awesome arrangement.

Does Etrian Odyssey do the thing where the music changes when the party is losing? This definitely sounded like you're in danger music and from your comment that's what it reads like, but I've never played it to know. Either way it's got the 'crap crap crap what do I do' feel lol.

@@siverwrites Unfortunately not, that would be really cool but I’ll say that the music tends to fit the battle regardless : P I think the closest thing to reactive music like that is for random encounters, there’s a chance to get a preemptive strike or getting ambushed and the opening riff for the regular battle music will change depending which one you get, and really reflects how you either get a free turn or lose a turn the moment you hear the music start.

@@rhythmrally Ah, too bad, but I have no doubt it very fitting where it is used. Thanks for telling me!

@@siverwrites it would be hard to change to losing music dynamically in a fight like the elemental dragons, where they tend to attempt party-wiping moves on the first turn anyway and you're *constantly* fighting uphill to not die

I would suggest you to start with EO4 or 5, they are pretty accesible, and EO4 is the "easiest" of of the saga, EO5 is rather closer to the first game level of difficulty, but both teach you the ropes properly and leave you to experiment a lot with the mechanics, be prepared to sometimes be totally anhilated and trying to figure out bosses, its a really fun experience

Honestly, any other Etrian music you should check out is two from the 3rd game, Drowned City, both being final boss tracks: "Each Justice" and "Calling That Detestable Name", the former track being for the final boss of whichever route you chose, and the latter being for the 2nd phase of the game's Superboss.

They were usally made for post game bosses that increase your party's level cap but by the 5th game the bosses were changed but the theme still remained.

I don't recall if this was ever explained to you by a requester, but the "Untold" Etrian titles are remakes of the first two original DS titles of the series, and they respectively feature re-arrangements of the entire soundtrack for their music (with live instrumentation and all, as opposed to the originals which were intentionally made to sound like FM-synthesized music). So, technically, you've listened to two different arrangements of the original track in this video, the first being re-arranged by Yuzo Koshiro himself! One thing I find it cool to point out is that this Super Arrange version in particular was done by Motoi Sakuraba (best known as the composer for Dark Souls, the Tales of Series, Golden Sun and others), who's a keyboardist with a notable background in japanese progressive rock music. I think it sort of explains the way the arrange sounds (though the original already has a bit of a proggy edge in my opinion), aside from being another cool example of notable composers arranging each other's works, which is something very persistent in these Etrian albums.

For Motoi Sakuraba I expected a better song, this one sounds very chaotic....
@HaxeRain
@HaxeRain 2 жыл бұрын
@@gnen7680 its because the theme itself represetns a chaotic situation, this theme is the iconic theme for a trio of superbosses in the EO series, the elemental dragons, supreme and primordial creatures that you can encounter in the post game, and each one is an opponent that the term "superboss" expresses well how strong they are, you will end in difficult spots often and will have to do all possible things to try to even adapt to them or survive turns
