Etrian Odyssey Nexus 3DS REVIEW - Nintendo Enthusiast

Etrian Odyssey Nexus is the final outing of the Atlus dungeon crawler RPG series on Nintendo 3DS, intended as a celebration of everything great about the games. However, this was actually my first time playing the series, so I went into it without any preconceived notions about what the game should or shouldn’t be. Ultimately, I think Nexus succeeds at delivering a robust dungeon crawling experience, but it might not win over anyone who doesn’t already love the genre.

The thing with Nexus (and most Etrian Odyssey games) is that they do have a good story, but it's less of a good JRPG story and more of a good Dungeons & Dragons Story in that campaign your friend designed. I actually find the stories quite enjoyable from that angle. Especially 4's, though that could be nostalgia talking.

Exactly! It's the primary reason Etrian Odyssey's stories work! The characters don't overstay their welcome and the stories don't revolve around this one MacGuffin character like a lot of JRPGs (As much as I love God Eater, it's my least favorite aspect of the story). In the end, you create your own journey. YOU are the protagonist. The characters' personalities and backstories are up to you to decide. It leaves just enough blanks for you to fill on your own.

Heroic and Expert are the same difficulty. It's just that Heroic doesn't allow you to lower your difficulty so it's mainly for bragging rights.

Been playing this series since EO1, I'm a pretty big fanboy. I'm glad that they made it's easier for newbies (especially at the end of the 3ds' life. Also this game has way more story than previous games, besides the untolds.

This comment is 3 years late, but would you recommend the series? I definitely love jrps in general, and love SMT/Persona, but when looking at it I'm still unsure if I want it... The 3ds is closing REALLY reaelllyy soon so I don't wanna miss out on a gem you know?

@@VincentLloydM Maybe start with Persona Q2? It's a crossover of etrian odyssey and persona Else i'd totally recommand EO, IV is usually recommended as a good starting point, but nexus is good too.

I'm kind of sad this is the last one on 3ds. I was expecting a remake of the 3rd on like they did the first two so all of them were on the 3ds. Not a huge loss since you can play ds games on the system. This series put me off since you had to make your own map but once I put that aside it was really fun.

If someone is looking for a story based Etrian Odyssey then they should check out Etrian Odyssey Untold, or Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold. They are remakes of the original 2 games in the series and offer both a story mode and classic mode.

Since your party is preset in the Untold games, they could play around with character specific gimmicks, and added "grimmoire stones" creation, a mechanic that allow you to give them the abilities of different classes, replacing the many more classes available in the mainline games or classic modes. Oh yes, as said before, there's classic modes as well, so you can choose to just play an updated version of the originals with all of the customisation they're known for. It also allowed for the use of animated cutscenes. Great games, and a great entry point when in doubt. There's also the Persona Q games, the second of which was just recently released, these are Etryan Odyssey (untold) games in all but the characters, the battle mechanics of the Persona games added to it, story, dungeon design, and art direction. So if you want a preset story, there's 4 lengthy options available. If after that you want more dungeon crawling and map drawing and control over your gameplay at the cost of some of the story, there's 3 more games!

For people not wanting to buy a 3DS for this game, but wanting to try something like this out, at least until Etrian Odyssey hits the Nintendo Switch (which it probably might), there is a game called "Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk" by the Disgaea devs which gets very close to Etrian Odyssey in terms of party management, classes, combat mechanics and dungeon layout AND especially the insanely high quality of Etrian Odyssey games. ;)

People should definitely check out the Etrian series even if there's little story. It provides a satisfying challenge rarely offered in modern gaming and the ost is to die for.

Im playing on expert and have found that using protectors healing wall makes it pretty easy to spam attack and save tp for bosses, with a bit of party moving of course, if you're still playing I'd recommend trying it out aa it uses no and simply requires your protector to block to restore a chunk of health for his line

Sorry for spamming your comment section, but this series is a love of mine, so i have a third topic - a question: How did you play your playthrough? With only one party or did you swap between two parties? :D I always level two parties at once with one being more of an explorer, hard hitting train and the other being more utility, gathering and crafting primarily for having alternative classes available to swap into my main party or just doing sidequests and crafting.

A squirrel .not lying there are many horror stories & it is not even fightable P.s.they put it in the hardest map at the worst spot in this game . all FOEs take 1 damage a hit ,have party wide atk only & chase the full map through walls . (have fun seeing game over )

I've never played the OG DS versions, and 3 on DS is "rare" so finding it cheap is impossible. Untold 1 was my first, and I'm currently working on Untold 2. Best thing about these games is that I can play them at work since I'm on nightshift. Thanks for the informative review, I definitely will invest in this and the other two (4 and 5).

Never finished any etrian, but enjoy them nevertheless. I have EO1234 and SJ and Devil Survivor 1+2. And Persona Q. I always play at the lowest difficulty; when I will ever finish one I'll consider a difficulty increase. Atlus makes very annoying dungeons, so will probably never get there. Anyway, it's a must-have, so I have it.

Been playing on Heroic for a couple of days now... DAMN. Bosses become Nightmares... having Nightmares, defeating them is like facing a Boss in an MMORPG That is 20 levels higher than you, one wrong move and the entire party will wipe, and you cant make a mistake for 2-4 hours. Don't torture yourself. I wonder if it Atlus will make some more on the Switch, It would be nice to give Guild members personalities and make them more alive, otherwise this dungeon crawler is just superb. Its a Niche though.

@Azure Neko Not trying to argue but as far as I'm aware Atlus never confirmed it even mentioned anything about the next EO. There was the teaser but no platform was mentioned and aside from that there is nothing at all on the next game. Of course with the series's history the Switch is the logical conclusion. Correct me if I'm wrong though. It'll just give me another reason to buy a switch outside of rune factory's return.

Great review! Not a critique, rather a fan of the series trying to defend it: The repetition must be intentional, since it stretches the playtime - this seems inherently bad, and it would be in a big PC game you dedicate a whole weekend to playing through, but this is a handheld title, so when playing Etrian Odyssey, almost everyone will play it in small chunks. In such a circumstance, where you only play in a lot of small chunks throughout a long time, stretched content isn't as apparent and doesn't feel as repetitive anymore, for fans like me it's literally more fun for a longer time. But that's a viewpoint of a fan.

The barebones story is a feature. It's for people with actual imaginations who don't want bland, cookie cutter JRPG stories shoehorned in with tiresome Japanese tropes. Dungeon crawling doesn't require someone else to make the story for you.
