💯 RIP to the legendary Etta James - I’m so sorry you didn’t get chance to sing your own song on such a meaningful occasion but your original version will live on in all our hearts ! NO ONE can hold a candle to that masterpiece!

It was in bad taste for them to ask Beyonce to perform this while Etta was still available to perform it. The proper thing for Beyonce to do would be contact Etta. It may be more complicated than that, however, with contracts and marketing teams involved with the new movie. Still bad taste and disrespectful. I understand where Etta is coming from.

Ryan Beaty I just scrolled through, and I'd like to think they were mostly typos. Some clearly were. The others? I shudder to think what my fifth grade teacher would do to them. And it's sad. That same teacher used to say misspellings and mispronunciations are the ways a language evolves, for better or worse. The more people drop the second T in the word "twenty", the more likely eventually the word will be spelled and pronounced "twenny". I think language is beautiful, and it really bugs me to see it used improperly. Or rather "painful", to quote you. And it's nice to find someone who won't think I'm completely crazy! I wonder if my late Alaskan malamute-wolf hybrid would have gotten along with a koala bear. With Worf, you never knew how he'd react. But I can say what music he liked, and it was very eclectic. Everything from Dean Martin (especially singing "That's Amore"); Santana's "Smooth", as well as any good lead guitar; Christina Aquilera; and The Pretender's "I'll Stand By You", which was OUR song. Strangely, he also loved "American Idol." Sometimes that was the only thing that stopped him sulking in his room (aka his crate). I think if he was still alive, he'd love "The Voice." He wasn't an ordinary dog.

Even though Beyonce was awesome when she sang that song. Come on now, how would you feel if a song that you sang forever and is attached to your name, and then some one else comes along and sings the song that you are known for, for the Presidental Inuaguration. And you are still alive and capable of singing the song that you are known for. How would you feel? Etta probably shouldn't have went as far as she did with her remarks. But she is justified in feeling the way that she does.

I honestly don't care too much for many of the remakes that are out there. Especially with the blues and soul music, I don't think there should be any remakes. The person who is covering the song doesn't have the same feeling that the person who wrote or sang the song originally. Etta James was able to put her heart into the song, but Beyonce was just trying to sing words. Nothing against Beyonce, but all she can do is sing the words, not feel what Etta was singing. Etta was in the right.

@msjbeasy1 That's my gripe with Bey. Didn't even make an effort to contact the woman she was playing before and while filming. It wasn't until AFTER did she come in contact with her. Plus, I understand Etta being upset about the inauguration. Here Beyonce is, singing Etta's famous rendition for the first black president...instead of the woman who went through the tough years for blacks. That really should've been Etta's moment. Then again, I respect my elders immensely.

Etta is right. With some performers you know it's the pain they've had in their lives that make them great, they know how to channel all of that raw emotion, tit was black coffee and cigarettes at three in the morning. That quality is gone. I'm not knocking Beyonce but she just doesn't project emotion into her music. "At Last" is Etta's Song, I think the White House was pretty disrespectful when they invited Beyonce to sing it and not Etta.

"At Last" was written by Mark Gordon and Harry Warren in 1941 for the musical film "Orchestra Wives". Etta James COVERED the song in 1960. It was never "her" song. It's just a song that she is well known for. Much like Whitney Houston is well known for "I Will Always Love You". This was a song that Dolly Parton released in 1974 and Houston covered in 1992. Unless you write and/or compose the music to the song, it is not "yours".

I fully agree with Etta. These new artists don't understand what soul in music is. Most of them don't even have real instruments. Music needs the funk, dirt and soul that it used to have. When any modern artists can show as much soul as a person like Etta James and understand what music is all about then they can cover old soul songs and actually do them some justice.

Etta James is a legend. Her voice is timeless. "At Last" is a classic, and Beyonce`s voice is just not made for that track. I don`t believe Beyonce meant any disrespect. But Etta James sings HER song as it should be song, in a low, soulful tone, and if she doesn`t want some modern-day pop singer to go around trying to rekindle HER classic, then she has every right to voice her distaste. After all, it is HER track. The ORIGINAL is and always will be the BEST. Love ya Etta. Get well soon.

Beyonce was asked by the Obamas to sing the song, Etta James sang it and popularized it, but she doesn't own it and wasn't the first to record it but she's all upset and disrespectful towards Beyonce and the Obamas because they chose Beyonce, she should be honored and appreciative for being recognized for popularizing it instead of talking bad and acting childish because she wasn't chosen to sing it . People sing other people's songs all of the time. Do you see Dolly Parton getting mad at Whitney Houston for singing her song? Heck no, she's very appreciative and delighted and praised Whitney for her version, even enjoying the monetary gain, she said that Whitney sang it better than she herself did, but different strokes for different folks, but to go nationwide and talk bad about people for no earthly reason makes absolutely no plausible sense whatsoever. and no Beyonce should not have declined singing it, the Obamas chose her and if they wanted Etta to sing it then they could have easily gotten in touch with her but more than likely that just wasn't the case, so it was a done deal, plain and simple. Awesome job Beyonce, your choice Obamas, then so be it, enough said

you guys are being insenstive to Etta's side of the story she has the right to be annoyed the wome has been performing the song for over 50 years the least that Beyonce can do was at least inveit Etta James to the inaguation and have her sing a duet with her Beyonce has a lot of nerve taking a woman's song and trying to take it as her own

@Sileni Actually, Etta James doesn't own any rights to that song at all. She has the most popular rendition of it, but that's it. "At Last" is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical film Orchestra Wives, starring George Montgomery and Ann Rutherford. It was performed in the film and on record by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, with vocals by Ray Eberle and Pat Friday. :-D

Etta James is clearly ungrateful. She should be happy that even after 50 years her song is still being sung and she is still being honored and called an inspiration by musicians today. She's unbelievable.

@gammin5 The fact that you have no idea about Etta doesn´t mean that Beyonce is better voice! Same thing as if you consider U2 kings of pop instead of Beatles! We´re talking about LISTENING MUSIC, not considering industry/teeny/idol/game/promotion as MUSIC! I admitt Beyonce has talent, but for God sake, Etta, Irma or Nina had a TREMENDOUS GIFT, they all were pure R&B voices -even if they hadn´t made million of records- not any one or two smash hit wonder idol! No hate at all my friend! :)

The woman struggled with dementia and leukemia in her waning years - my grandmother yelled about everyone and everything, would forget and change her mind. BE COMPASSIONATE AND RESPECTFUL. When you reach the end of your life with dementia, you have the disposition of a 2 year old on acid. To take her second remark about the song seriously and making it public was disrespectful of the media, and it was disrespectful of Beyonce not to ask Etta if she'd have the honor of singing it for such a special occasion if she had the ability to. Here's to you Etta - hope you and my grandma cuss out the angels in heaven together over cheesecake❤❤

@sxelbra Exactly! I agree with you 100% She wasn't the first person to sing it and she definitely did not write it. Therefore how can she call this "Her Song." I don't understand what her problem is.

@IRunLA69 I wasn't insinuating that Etta was owed compensation but that here in the USA "respecting the artist" in that way is done far better in "older" countries. I will say that Etta covered it well enough to likely make her version the best selling version. I.E.: Her signature song. The fact that others choose to cover that song solely based on Etta's rendition/version of the song speaks volumes and gives tribute to none other than Etta herself. "6 in one hand, 1/2 dozen in the other."

Although I love, love, love Etta James' version of the song, she doesn't have the right to be pissed off at Beyonce. 1) Although Etta made the song famous (again) it was originally written in 1941 by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren. The first big hit version was performed by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. 2) Beyonce did a great job of playing her in the movie 3) Beyonce is not trying to claim that she owns the song at all 4) Beyonce had done some wonderful tributes to Etta previously.

The greatest compliment a person could receive is “imitating”. Applause Etta you've only received one of the highest compliments. Both ladies should have been invited to sing together. The song was perfect for that occasion.

Lets be honest....Beyonce made that song popular with the younger generation, she did an excellent rendition and also delivered it well. Etta was losing her marbles... and didn't know what the hell she was saying, she actually sounded drunk or high who knows...lol Beyonce is doing a great job and representing black women and WOMEN on a whole very well. Etta should be flattered that Beyonce is making her song current.... I honest think that Beyonce's Cover is the BEST I've heard dus far QUEEN B!
