The greatest scena in this very great opera. Here, the aria and traditional cabaletta reach the zenith of the form. How beautifully the character of Posa is expressed in harp and brass as he dies. Has there ever been a voice that can express his nobility as well as signor Bastianini? I doubt it.

What beautiful "golden age" singing, utterly without strain, and always with a beautiful line. This was the "norm" during this era, though I don't mean to suggest that Bastianini was not exceptional-he was. It's interesting to consider the contrast of someone like Sherril Milnes just a decade later-in the famous Giulini studio recording, though he also sounds marvelous-the younger singer goes through many "colorations" in between tessitura to hide the transitions. Though he does sound wonderful, the mannerism of the way he negotiates the transitions starts to be noticeable to the point of distraction. None of that kind of "negotiation" or compromise seems to be there in Bastianini and some of the greats of his generation.

In a Bastianini Collection that I have there are some excerpts from this performance. His scene with Boris Christoff here is fine as well & they both also made a studio recording of DON CARLO around this time which I also purchased & is, IMO, one of the best recordings of the 5 Act Italian version. Bastianini’s instrument is beautifully suited to this role.

Je trouve que la comparaison avec Dmitri est choquante et le terme ’ gouffre’ cruel et inapproprié. Dmitri était un magnifique baryton qui, lui-même , a reconnu les grandes qualités d’Ettore Bastianini.
