Etude in E minor by Cornelius Gurlitt, Op. 82 No. 35 is also known as Andante, A Deserted Garden or Melody in E minor. This etude comes from the collection of 100 etudes in the collection “The First Steps of The Young Pianist”. This piece is a very lyrical piece, with many repetitions and a sad, melancholy mood. You know, that’s exactly what I was thinking, how is this an etude? Until I found out that Etude comes from the french word Étudier, meaning to study. So an etude is any piece that demonstrates a certain technique or a piece that you study. So even Czerny’s Op599 No1 (extremely easy) is an etude and so are the Transcendental Etudes by Liszt (extremely difficult). So there are Etudes of many levels. Hope this helped you!
