DESCRIPTION
The EU's Taxonomy regulation is a unique effort to create a common classification system of sustainable economic activities for investment purposes. It is also an effort to prevent greenwashing and align the financial sector with the EU's efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. However, the Delegated Act published in April 2021 created great controversy because of the changes to the criteria on forestry and biomass. Now, it is expected that further changes will follow concerning gas and nuclear.
The session will aim to explore the following questions:
Is the taxonomy still fit to serve its purpose in helping economies to meet the Paris Agreement goals?
How will the taxonomy take into account the need for the CEE region to transition from greater coal and gas dependency?
Are there any unintended consequences that might arise from the application of the taxonomy?
Moderator:
Dr Theodor Cojoianu, Assistant Professor in Finance at Queen's University Belfast and Member of EU Platform on Sustainable Finance
