A personal one of my tips for playing as a small nation is to not be scared to declare war against a larger nation. For example if you are playing as Scotland or an Irish minor and you see that England is having the war of the roses, declare war, immediately even if you don't have any good allies, just get enough war score to take one or two provinces and try not to get in any battles just siege. An example that actually happened in my Irish run was that England declared war on France and England had all of their troops in France, so I declared war, blockaded the English channel and full sieged England, that's how I got the Luck of the Irish achievement.

@@sterd1149 Yea it was fun back when I played it. My region had a pretty much impossible start but still... kept trying. But I noticed they didnt give all regions a decent chance, and at first I said they trying to be historically accurate but, actually no. My region was tiny back then , and not some famous empire, but it wasnt as weak as the game would have you think, since it defeated many times the Ottomans and several other empires around. So in reality the game isnt historically accurate but also isnt giving a decent chance , everything is based on the perception or Bias of whoever balanced the regions, and they did a poor job at it because eventually they dont know their history. If you dont know history well enough you should just give a decent chance to most areas, but they didnt do that either. So the game can appear good historically depending on what faction you play, but.. it got old for me once I realized it wasnt very accurate, its all based on the perception and Bias of the creator, not on history nor on balance for the sake of gameplay. So it definitely doesnt deserve all that DLC money... its just greedy and pretty lazy.

This is awesome video - please make more like this one. Regarding that particular advice with religion and alliances, in my last gameplay, I played as Serbia and even dough Serbia is Orthodox, Hungary was a great pal to me. Hungary rivaled Ottomans and as I sent my 2 diplomats to Austria and Hungary, I rivaled Ottomans as well. Very soon Hungary decided to proclaim my Guarantee and becoming an ally was easy. In my whole gameplay, Austria was not my ally only 5 or 10 years. My point is: as a small nation picking a rival same as the bigger nations can greatly improve your standing and chances for an alliance. How important these alliances were to me as Serbia is that I went over my diplo limit with so many alliances and then it was Ottomans on one side vs Serbia (me), Hungary, Austria, Poland + Lithuania and Mamluks. In such scenario, it was easy to remove the Kebab. But it all started by rivaling the Ottomans. For me, France was too far away, but I did allied them later because Spain was an issue in Italy and I expanded myself over there, but that is some 200 years later. I kept one Ottoman province always bordering Hungary to ensure Hungary hate them more and more. These ideas were very important while playing as Serbia. Since Serbia has "Bastion of Orthodoxy" that alone reduces unrest with new Patriarch authority mechanics and adding Humanist ideas makes almost any rebellion very unlikely. My point is: player needs to be very flexible and use any and all beneficial bonuses that game offers for any particular nation/country.

Declaring war on Novgorod during their war with Muscovy and take their land while they keep fighting each other. With the high development provinces acquired, get Poland, the Golden Horde and perhaps Denmark as allies and go to war against Muscovy, release their vassals and ally them. ... This was just the beginning of the glorious empire of Tver.

The problem with Tver back then was that it started with a core of Muscovy on it and a claim of Novgorod so it couldn't ally those two. It changed within one of the more recent updates so that one can ally Muscovy but it took quite some effort and luck to succeed with that nation.

Some of this is actually applicable to the bigger countries too. Timing wars is everything in EU4. Even playing as say, England...you want to time your wars (especially the first war near the start of the game) so that your numbers/quality outweighs theirs i.e. your allies and the quality of your combined military is stronger than France and her allies. It comes down to simply using the ledger and doing the numbers before taking the risk to go to war. That said, there are some things you can't account for such as allies sometimes performing bad despite being strong. There's been a few times where I've declared war on France pulling both Austria and Castle into the fight. Both nations hadn't been in recent wars and were strong but they just sucked. They sent like a 10k stack to run around France not doing allot whilst France's allies were on the ball. This does tend to be quite rare though.

Agree on the point of timing your first war right. One of my most successful first wars was with Lucca (customized game, only added Corsica though and had just 7k army, staying 1 below the force limit). Aragon threatening me cause I had Corsica and allied France, Milan being my second ally. Really wanted Genoa but thought I couldn't win the navy battles vs them, Savoy, Venice and another nation. So I waited for years until I could declare war on my rival Ferrara along with its allies Florence, The Papal State and Albania. Results: - gained Pisa from Florence - made Ferrara my vassal in the end - about 80 power projection added (Florence was my rival as well) - boosted the economy by making money - couldn't take Roma, Provence or vassalize Urbino due to AE but forced them to break the scary alliance with Austria and gained additional prestige - obliterated their navies and caught galleys from them - got access to the Adriatic Sea for future claims as well as the Venice trade node - got a belt of provinces that made it much more difficult for my neighbouring nations to expand north or south, especially now that they had to rebuild their navies - got rid off the threat that I got 'nowhere to hide/escape' in case Genoa, Florence, Ferrara or even Mantua attacked me (keeping troops at Corsica all the time while I need to transport twice to get them off the island was no viable option). Now only Aragon posed that threat which was rather unrealistic as they were a junior partner. - vassalizing Ferrara further helped to get a bigger army while staying below the force limit - could finally give influence to the Burghers after coring Pisa Really glad that I avoided attacking my main target Genoa. This war completely turned the tables for the rest of the game. Getting the right timing, involving multiple nations as well as rivals while not overestimating your powers makes a hell of a difference as a small nation.

some manpower advices: - look out for terrain like hills, mountains, forest etc cous it gives the enemy mali - dont siege ur self, let your allies siege at all cost, and when an ally wants the same provinces like you do, just put 1 stack of units there and w8 for your allys to help // you also can take a 1 stack army with general on a province, activate the button that allied armys can join your army and siege than, that way your allied units are under your control - as small nation i very often pick quantity first cous the first 4-5 ideas of this group are very good especially for smaller nations, the first 2 help with mp-recovery and the other help with army maintenance, so your economy will be much better, also it lowers mercenary cost by 25% ( could be mercenary available +25% im not 100% sure about this) how ever when you finish quantity you also higher your forcelimit which helps with alliances from that on for a quick finish of quantity i usually set tech priority on military at day 1, you will tech military quickly and by the time beeing you get your first ideagroup i often have >800 military points to get the first 2 ideas instantly, that way you dont fall behind with military tech aswell which helps a lot in wars // when you do this: dont tech military tech 7 untill you have the first 4-5 ideas from quantity or finished it cous with setting tech on military ( depending on your ruler...) you might get unbalanced tech what higher you coruption

Cool tip for Byzantium start, start by improving relations with Albania, while going for Polish or Austrian Alliance. If Hungary allies with Albania, hope that Ottoman attacks Albania first. If that happens, offer Albania an alliance, and accept when he calls you into war. Attach your 11k troops to Skanderbeg (Albania's 5-5-5-0 General) and watch him destroy the Ottomans with Hungarian Manpower. He will return all your cores, since he only wants a single province from the Turk. If Ottomans attack you first though, it's pretty much game over unless you got your Polish alliance in time.

As Georgia i usually eat imerti and samstke, vassal circassia and ally russia and gazimukide. The last ally is situational or AQ to prevent and early ottoman war. Depends on what's available. Don't take aq if they aren't an ottoman ally but if they are don't risk being rivals.

Got a pro-tip: 1.Play as Wallachia. 2.See Serbia take Vidun from Ottomans as they ally Austria and get the entire HRE to war with the Ottomans. 3.Keep raising your development, as it doesn't concern you. You are just happy the Ottomans are busy. 4.Serbia+HRE war ends, Serbia solo declares war on you out of the blue. They have 4k troops wtf. You have 11k. Take all of Serbia + Vidun. Now you are more than double the initial size. 5.Bosnia take Ragusa and see you as weak (you have 11k troops wtf), they declare war out of the blue!?!? They have 6k troops... Ok take Bosnia now. You are more than 3x the initial size now. 6.Ottomans see you as weak, they attack to take Vidun back. You can support a fairly large army 20K, and have a fairly good war leader. Defend Vidun using terrain modifiers and scum saving to get lucky draws @ fights. Drag war until white peace. 7.Get offered alliance by Austria out of the blue, accept, they are at war with Poland+Lithuania+Moldavia. Get called in. Your side has 70k troops they have 37k wtf? Take Moldavia for your own plus a couple of Poland/Lithuania provinces. 8.Sit back wondering how your little 5 provinces country could get a donation of 21 provinces in the first 19 in-game years without you ever preparing for war, surrounded by superpowers: Ottomans, Hungary(+Austria), Poland/Lithuania. 9.Profit. Bottom line: Be lucky.

ANyone have any advice for playing as Holland? I want to make the dutch nation.
@martoboyo7 жыл бұрын
1. Get as much support for your independence as possible. England, France and Austria are good, maybe even Provence or Denmark or so. You might want to restart untill the rivalries are ideal. Generally, you want at least France and Austria. 2. In your independence war, if you have enough support, you will win rather easily. Try and use your troops to support your allies, avoid getting wiped if possible, but generally speaking Burgundy will lose even if you dont participate. Don't go in debt too far or anything, this war should be rather easy. 3. In the peacedeal, try to get as much as possible WITHOUT getting a coalition. If you took the time to get a claim before you declared the war (which I wouldnt recommend, but it's a valid option), take the claim. I often try to get Antwerp, because it's a very good province. Freeing Brabant or Flanders is also a good option, to create some easier expansion early (though Brabant often gets strong while Flanders either gets conquered by or allied with England: every game is different). Cripple Burgundy as hard as you can. 4. Now you are free. Generally, you can keep at best one of your supporters of indepence. France is stronger and more likely to help you against Burgundy and England, and protects you against himself. Austria is nice to prevent the Unlawful Territory stuff, and can be a real powerhouse, but he won't help you fight internal HRE wars and you might get pulled into wars you don't want. Generally, keep France as an ally. As for other allies, just look around and befriend rivals of your rivals (Munster, Brunswick, Cologne), but be careful as betraying allies is pretty punishing nowadays and you don't want to get dragged into dumb wars. 5. So now you are free, you have France and some small nations as allies and 3 very good provinces. After this, you should take some time to recover (if necessary) and definitely late your Aggressive Expansion tick away to at least 10. The Dutch provinces are very good but cost a lot of AE, so only declare wars if your AE allows it. A small coalition wont matter, a big one ruins your game. You can promise France land if you want to take Burgundian lands, or maybe English if they got further inland, but remember to actually give them the land they want: you DONT want to lose France as an ally for a long time. After that, it's a matter of choices and patience. Don't be afraid to expand outside of the Dutch lands, into Northern Germany (East Frisia and such), or northern France (though be careful you don't take lands France wants). England is a rewarding but difficult option, as England has a strong navy and getting to England often means conquering provinces France REALLY wants. Always keep an eye at your AE and be oppportunistic for opportunities. Some general tips lastly: 1. Get a Diplo Rep advisor early and build to your force-limit or even over it to get the early support and alliances 2. Once you declare the independence war, you get a randomly generated ruler. You might want to restart untill you get an acceptable one: a 4/3/5 will make a game much easier than a 1/1/2. Same goes for generals. I had a 3/6/5/0 general from the Champion of the Joust event once, which was insanely lucky and make the start much easier. 3. A good moment to expand might be when Austria demands Unlawful Territory from a neighbour. The released nation starts without allies, so you can declare immediately (if you had a claim of course). Friesland often expands, losing its Free City status in the proces while returning the land afterwards to the HRE. Another opportunity is when a Western German nation gets big and inevitably gets in over its head, losing multiple wars badly or have no allies due to AE. Don't be a part of a coalition, but instead pounce on him when the coalition has him pinned down in a bad war. 4. Colonize. It gives a nice powerboost and gives you something to do while waiting for AE to tick down. 5. Save up money. Holland gets rich early, so save that money up to build the manufactories immediately when they become available, and so you can merc up should the need arise (it shouldn't, but just in case) 6. Develop your country. With a good ruler and advisors and long pauses between expansion, you will find yourself with plenty of monarch points to spend on development. Get Economic ideas if you want to play tall (Netherlands has an idea for development cost, and Holland gets a 20% reduction via Decision), or Trade if you want to dominate the English Channel Node or even the Lubeck node. Use the development to get Institutions before teching up: spending 20% extra on tech is usually a waste (unless it gives you a military edge), while spending 500 points on development will benefit you the entire game.

I can manage to get an alliance with Poland as Serbia once in a while. But I get stomped by Hungary and the Ottomans because Poland and Lithuania have their hands full trying to survive Russia and Sweden.
