Best tutorial ever. The “wrong” examples and accompanying sign/ sound effects were great, but the cookie and milk, pure gold! Proper great work. It was enlightening AND entertaining. Kept my attention the entire time, and that’s what a greater teacher does: educates while keeping his/ her students engaged. Not realizing one is learning, because one is having fun. Just brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing your time and wisdom. 🍻

What I appreciate about this video is how honest and real it is. We are all just wanting to be great drummers. So by listening /watching this video, I was taught to let my guard down. I do need to practice more. Because every single one of us knows that practicing absolutely WILL make us better. And he tells us that in a non threatening way. No drummer that we love, be it George Kollias, or jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton sat down on a drum seat, and played like that without deciding that this is what I want to take as far as I possibly can in life. If anybody reading this hasn't heard jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton. Do it. Nit one person that truly appreciates what and how important the drums are to music in general, will not be blown away by this unassuming 60 something year old play drums in a way that will have you showing all of your musician friends. It's amazing how different drums can be played. He truly proves that the drums are an instrument, not just a beat keeper. There is a 3 part interview with him that you'll find just by using the search engine on KZbin. He says alot of things in other videos that Eugene speaks about in this one. Like the importance of balance, and staying loose. It's awesome to see 2 expert drummers that play a totally different style, say so many things that are basically identical in meaning and purpose. I needed you Eugene.! You have revived the emotions of drumming in me that I myself had forgotten existed. A heart felt Thank You Sir.!

excellent advice throughout this whole video. i played/practiced for 2 years before i was able to hold 16th notes at 120bpm for more than 5 minutes. so for those that think its easy...its not. but its worth it if you stick with it. and hes 100% right. doing it correctly at slower tempos is much more productive than doing it wrong at faster tempos..you wont learn anything like that.

I consider that video not only enjoyable to watch, but also the best video about Double Bass on yt. I'm playing now almost 3 years, first two on roland drums, never really practiced speed of double bass as a pure "separate" exercise, it was coming along with practise for songs that I wanted to play ( spend a hell of a time learning painkiller intro for example). I changed electronic set for acustic drums at the end of august this year. On acustic drum you've got to punch harder than on the trigered pad, therefore I didn't had the stamina for fast playing. I starded from 150 bpm (16th notes). At that speed I was able to maintain stable 30 min double bass without interruption. I played at that speed for 2 weeks everyday, 30 min long (preceded by 15 min warmup with various double bass beats) and jumped for 160 bpm. And then there is the list: 160 bpm - one week 165 bpm - one week 170 bpm - two weeks 175 bpm - one week 180 bpm - I'm starting second week now I'm playing for 30 minutes everyday, and I don't jump 5 bpm faster until I don't feel quite relaxed at certain speed. I'm going for 210 bpm for now, thanks Eugene you've showed the right way, just sit and play :D Ohh and I've got crappy pedal worth about 80 $ newdeal.home.pl/matrix/stopa518/1.jpg Greetings from Poland, hope you like I shared my thought

Take care!

Thank you Eugene I could not play fast double bass before I watched this video three years ago. Slow and steady wins the race. I played 8th notes (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + instead of 1e+a2e+a3e+a etc) 165 bpm for 10 minutes 3 days a week because that felt comfortable. (if you must play that slow 2-3x a week for 10-15 minutes, do so because it counts) and one day after two months of this regiment I warmed up and performed my regiment as usual and I was able to use my ankles for the first time in my life! I then dialed the tempo down to a comfortable 150 bpm 16th notes and played it for 30 minutes. Now I can play 210 bpm on the flip of a dime! Thank you again on behalf of myself and my band mates. Let your body breathe, stay in time with a metronome, adjust your tempo according to your present comfort and abilities, and these methods will help you with overall timekeeping and fast double bass.

This is so cool.. I started to learn heel-toe single technique three months ago (wanja gröger a.k.a. morganvanhelsing on KZbin "taught" me :D). A month ago I couldn't do 170 bpm for 10 minutes, now I can do 190 for 10 minutes and 180 for 30 minutes. Now when I practise I start daily with 150 bpm 10 minutes, 160 bpm 10 minutes, 170 bpm 20 minutes and then 180 30 minutes. After that today I did 3x1 minute 190 bpm (rested for a while in-between) and then could do 10 min 190 bpm for the first time. What did I learn? It Doesn't Matter if you don't see "visible" progress every day - what you Can see is that you'll be able to play cleaner and "easier" and with less tenseness and louder with the familiar tempos. At first, though, I just spent hours and hours watching my feet (either right of left, playing with one foot at a time) and tried to make it look and feel and sound sensible when first learning the heel-toe single technique. I hope this helps someone. This video is all True. Thank you!

I'm back my friend, and I've been working on your technique for a while now. The key is tightening the springs all the way up and adjusting the beaters all the way back 90 degrees. You'll get the quick response or bounce-back that takes time getting used too. This is what increases your speed but in doing so, you need to following your technique in controlling the pedal, which is playing with your ankles and bouncing the pedal, as you say like a basketball, and staying completely relaxed. This is what's hard and takes time to practice if you're just starting out. But for us drummers who've been playing for a long time , this is the next step up. In the last six months I've gone from 140BPM to 180BPM no problem practicing at least 30 minutes a day up to a couple of hours. Truly amazing, thank you sir!

@YaDingus4 жыл бұрын
140 - 150 bpm is where a lot people cap at because your technique needs to change around then. Your hip flexors need to act as suspenders for your legs rather than being a source of power. Then all your power and control should come from foot, ankle, and calf. Basically, at faster speeds (140+), your quads and knees need should be fixed at one position rather than moving up and down. 5:37 is a perfect example.

I have been practicing on my new Yamaha DFP9D pedals at 140 bpm for 5 mins. Hip flexors are burning. 🤣 Now to the next level - ankle and swivel!
@antondubkov4 жыл бұрын
@@YaDingus I see this a lot on the internet that if someone can't play fast it's because they are using full leg motion -- that's definitely not the only reason (I'm sure everyone who is trying to figure out how to play faster is more than aware of leg vs ankle). For me - I using ankle technique 100% (i use leg only for extremely slow stuff like 100bpm, anything moderate or faster -- only ankle) and my max is still at around 160-170 bpm (i can do bursts at 200 though). I don't think it's leg vs ankle - a lot of people play with full leg at over 200 bpm (for example watch a studio video of Jay Weinberg playing Unsainted with double bass over the verses kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGjMioGAlM2ohpI, that's 205 bpm or smth -- full leg motion). I personally sort of solved this for myself by figuring out how to play doubles (heel-toe), so here's an example of me playing a 190bpm song with double strokes - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZXCo5qrl9aJZsk
@YaDingus4 жыл бұрын
@@antondubkov You're right, there are multiple ways to achieve higher bpm double bass. Once I reach about 140 bpm I began to switch to more ankle movement but I'm still using some higher leg motion for balance and control. It's the same technique Marthyn Jovanovic. The, of course, around 190 I'm all ankle. I notice you keep your pedals pretty close to the thrown which is what I use to do, but now I keep them quite further away which is WAY more comfortable for higher BPMs. Awesome performance, by the way! Does a different drive shaft make a difference? I was thinking about converting my Speed Cobras to direct drive.

Ok, I tightened the springs all the way up on my DW 9000 pedals and adjusted the beaters to the 90 degree angle and after the first day of practice that shit was killing me. I had to loosen the dam springs and I practiced 30 minutes a day doing the angle bounce for a week. I can't believe the improvement in speed in just a week. I still have a long way to go but at least I know now how to get there.The key is practicing to a metronome and staying relax while keeping the bounce. Unbelievable! I've look all over youtube and this is by far the best video on improving foot speed. I was about to get footiments but I don't think I need that video anymore. Eugene Ryabchenko Yeah, i'm still learning how to use them well, i've tried adjusting springs but the left one is always a bit harder to use than the right pedal. Also i can only do a 180 bpm pattern for a short time and thats with my feet flat, cant do it with my heels up for some reason :/ Need more muscle im weak and out of shape atm

You have no idea how much you've helped me out. i started doing what you said by practicing for a about 30 min. i did that for about 2 weeks and ive started seeing improvement. Now to work on the flying fingers technique. Thanks again man

Hey Eugene, Great video, thanks for those advices. I was wondering, I'm not yet at the speed of 170. I'm for now confortable at 140, and sometimes I can reach 160. I was wondering what technique should I use at those speed. I mean, when are you switching to the swivel technique ? I play mostly heel up or flat foot. Do you think It's good to practice heel up until 170 and then switch to Swivel ? I hope I have been clear enough haha. Last question, you talked about endurance, but what about control ? I mean, I'm able to go at 160, for like 1 or 2 minutes, but it's impossible for me to play a song At 160 bpm with stuff like syncopation on the feet or you know, particular kinda jent beats. any hint ?

Make sure you watch this one if you need control kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpDNk4Gqisppm68 You can do full leg until 180 with ease. + you can do endurance at slower tempos, not a problem.

Already did ;). thanks ! I have already improved my control thanks to your advices ! will you make a video on tips/exercices for finger/hand technique (I have seen the advanced hand techniques, but I dont really know how to practice speed & control with fingers...). Will you go to the NAMM show this year ?

Is it normal that im playing 170 bpm with one pedal?
@Mr___f3 жыл бұрын
@@ogKalmari either you are actually doing 85 bpm or it isn't sustained. Otherwise video proof is needed there since that is literally insane

An excellent video. One crucial aspect of your "play so and so many strokes per day" method is that it habitualizes it. It becomes a daily routine just like brushing your teeth. Make it a habit, and you'll be forced to do it every day. Then, like you said, turn off your brain. Don't over-think it. You'll only end up psyching yourself out, and you'll end up breaking yourself of the habit. Sit down, shut up, and play, every single day. This was the first video I've seen on your channel, and you're up one subscriber. Excellent video.
