This event is co-organised by the EUI's Environmental Challenges and Climate Change Governance Interdisciplinary Research Cluster and the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance aims to discuss the European Union Deforestation Regulation.
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), adopted in May 2023, is an ambitious and innovative measure aimed at greening the Union’s supply chains and mitigating climate change beyond its borders. The Regulation prohibits operators from placing a series of major agricultural commodities on the EU market if they have been produced on recently deforested land and imposes mandatory due diligence obligations on firms trading such products in Europe.
The workshop will bring together academic researchers and policy practitioners (including civil society) from within and beyond the EU to discuss the latest developments in the implementation of the EUDR, the Regulation’s potential impacts on different stakeholders, and its reception by producer countries. The first day of the workshop will concentrate on current policy developments, while the second day will address the legitimacy and effectiveness of EU action as a transnational environmental regulator from a broader theoretical and normative perspective.
