thegeekgroup.org/ - This week: a dinosaur that's surprisingly accurate, but still manages to be very wrong in other ways. The armored dinosaur Euoplocephalus was a Cretaceous Period specimen that was indeed very much as the toy portrays, but Steve's gonna get nit-picky with it. For science!

it might be a surprise to some from the younger generation, but there are many companies out there producing updated, scientifically accurate, dinosaur toy that is NOT 3D printed... What's important is a competent and knowledgeable paleo-artist instead of fancy technology.

Brian Sullivan : they are textured using photographs of construction paper; the shapes are vector art & it's all animated digitally. This is actually the episode that made me concede that the fake stop motion isn't feasible from a production standpoint; all those segments of armor & individual spikes were nearly as fiddly to animate as they would be with actual paper! So, for now at least, the dinosaur animations will be more like slides--that way we can get the episodes out in a more timely fashion. (I can't actually reply to your comment. KZbin is weird sometimes.)
@bpatricksullivan
@bpatricksullivan 10 жыл бұрын
These episodes are great. Are the cut-paper-style animations done with actual cut paper in any stage of the production, or are they 100% digital? The parts where the changes you describe are animated into the video are one of my favorite parts. I'd like to see a video about how you create those animations.

I actually have this Euoplocephalus toy. It came in a dinosaur playset carry case along with a T-rex, Apatosaurus, Triceratops, Velociraptor, Ceratosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Styracosaurus. They have a number of inaccuracies but what's funny is that I have an older set of dinosaurs that are the same except lower quality build and paint job. In that set it was labeled as Ankylosaurus.

Euplocephalus is a Cretaceous dinosaur, if I recall correctly? Around the same time as flowering plants? Could it be their more advanced nasal cavities filtered out pollen? Or, now that I'm typing, it seems more likely it would filter out sand and dust in the air. They live in xeric areas, correct?

I think it would be very interesting if Ankylosaurs butted heads like cows or turtles, there might not be any evidence of that and it wouldn't make much sense, but maybe a really big species would instead of tail bashing since it takes so much energy and the shock can go through the armor so it makes sense that they would just have shoving matches

According to most sources I'm aware of--and this has been my favourite dinosaur for like a quarter of a century--suggest he pronounced it wrong. I wonder why it didn't have any armor at all on its tail. I realize it needed to have the tail remain more flexible than the rest of the body, but seeing as it's the part of its body that probably most regularly saw interaction with predators, I would have figured some bony structures would have remained.
@Blobstermob
@Blobstermob 4 жыл бұрын
You probably dont remember the content of this video being the comment is two years old. He does state the tail bones were pretty stiff and I doubt it would need armor tbh, as nothing would be able to get ahold of its tail without getting smacked in the face. Edit: spelling
@Raptorman0205
@Raptorman0205 2 жыл бұрын
@@Blobstermob Revisiting this comment, yeah, probably wasn't very necessary on account of the giant ball of death attached to the end of it lol though given his more recent commentary on "bony rod" structures, they're more likely ossified tendons than actual bone. Which makes a lot of sense, it would probably need very stout tail tendons to flail the club around, and likely would need to facilitate more side to side movement than up and down.

question, how do we know what dinosaurs had cheeks and lips? And why lips matter with sound?
@mattiles4778
@mattiles4778 6 жыл бұрын
#1dinofan Mezezoic Well, we know dinosaurs had cheeks based largely on what they ate. Herbivores generally had cheeks to hold food they were chewing, or in some cases just slicing up. As for beaks, that would go down to finding species with beaks and phylogenetically bracketing from there. Finally, I wouldn't say lips had much to do with sound, that would be more associated with cavities in the skull connected to the mouth or nose.
