Euphyllia corals are one of the most popular corals in the reef keeping hobby. Euphyllia such as hammer heads, torches, and frogspawn add color and a nice fluidized motion to any aquarium. They can range in colors from brown to bright green. There is even a coveted golden hammer and torch variety floating around out there. This video touches on some of the care requirements to keep euphyllia in a home aquarium, and gives care tips so that you can be successful in keeping these amazing animals alive and thriving.

High I’ve never been successful with hammers I’ve got 2 in my aquarium all parameters are stable but the tentacles at the base are shortening! Lighting led about 150par everything else including sps are doing great any ideas

Hey there. How is your flow for the hammers. If the flow is too high for them it can cause retraction. I'm assuming salinity and ph is good since you said parameters are stable. Make sure there are no fish picking at him. I have never had that issue with hammers bit it is possible depending on the species of fish. Make sure the flow is enough to sway the tentacles from side to side but not to strong to where it blasts them all to one side. Alkalinity swings can irritate hammers so just double check parameters including phosphates and nitrates. How long have you had the hammer? If it is new to your aquarium he could be adjusting too.

Is the flow to high or directly hitting one of the heads. That could make it close up on one side?

How can I remove my hammer from the frag? He’s stuck on there really well and don’t want to hurt it!

Usually you can gently kinda pull the hammer away from the surface of the plug. you can use a clean flat head screwdriver or razor blade to break the glue on the plug. if it is really stuck on there you can use a band saw or a pair of bone cutters to cut the hammer off the plug if it is a big enough frag. You can also cut the stem of the plug off and glue the remaining disk to a rock in the aquarium I have done that before. I know a lot of people do not want plugs in their aquarium. because of visual reasons. If this remains an issue for you send me an email and I'll try and help you out. contact info can be found on the website www.cmaquaticsky.com. Happy reefing!
