The ETS has a trim beard while the house sparrow has a shabby bib...and a dull gray cap. Your adjectives give away your bias, not that you try to hide it. But all the birds get to eat the smorgasbord that your hubby provides. Your clever and informative narratives along with good footage about identification is always terrific. Thanks.

Thank you, Judy. You know that "clever and informative narrative along with good footage" is just what I aim for. But I have to give birding author Pete Dunne the credit for the description you quoted. I rephrased what he said about the ETS. I found this excerpt from a Missouri Conservationist article: In May, 1972, Dick Anderson, an expert St. Louis birder, received a phone cll from the Pentagon at his place of work. the caller explained that James Schlesinger, Secretary of Defense, and an avid birder, was in town on official business. They asked if Anderson, after work, might find a Eurasian Tree Sparrow for the Secretary to add to his life list. Anderson agreed, of course, and met Schlesinger, who flew in by helicopter, at a high school football field. The two shook hands and were chauffeured to a known ETS haunt. He and Schlesinger not only saw a Eurasian Tree Sparrow, but they lingered to watch the May migration of warblers. At dusk, before they parted company, Anderson asked the Secretary how often he was able to get out birding. Schlesinger answered, "Not often, but it does help maintain my sanity when I do."

Very helpful, Jo. We finally saw Bluebirds at our backyard winter feeders for the first time this year. I quickly put up a bluebird house, but was dismayed when ETS settled in. Had they been House Sparrows, I would have dispatched them, but was uncertain about the ETS, so I let them be. Three fledglings later I now wondered if it would good to clean out their nest, but I was unsure...until viewing your video...if they intended to lay multiple broods throughout the summer, like our Mourning Doves. You cleared that up, so cleaning brush is now in hand.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME3 жыл бұрын
Well, I can't be sure that what happens at our house--the ETSes mostly departing after one brood--is what happens generally. Most songbirds have to raise two or three broods a year just to keep their species numbers stable, but I'm guessing that the ETSes we had in those boxes last year went to rural areas to raise the next brood. But even if they would have raised another brood at your house, I'd say it's fine if you cleaned the box out. I means, they can go elsewhere. And after all, it's Bluebirds you want to see. I get that!

Thanks for your video! I'm from China, but I don't know this history! And I just search the news and knew it. Our ancestors focused on the development of crops, they killed 36571 sparrows at that time, so that protect the crops. It is rare to see sparrows now because most crops are now irrigated with pesticides, and now the house of cities and rural areas are built with bricks and cement. I can vaguely remember that when I was young, about 15 years ago, I could still see them on the thatched houses in the country.

As far as I know, they are disappeared in the cities. Because in the city there have some reasons cause the birds cannot live: 1. Pesticides, it makes sparrow poisoning. Also, make the young birds short of food. 2. The environment changes and it is difficult to make a nest.

I asked my husband about your question, since he's the one who feeds the birds. He said that, for the most part, the birds don't need our help really (except in extreme weather--see Helping Birds Survive a Cold Snap). It's most often just a way to get the birds to come around and come close enough for us to watch them. By this time of the year, there are some seeds and lots of bugs, so they'll be fine anytime you choose to stop.

IMO, that’s a good plan. During the summer there are lots of food options for birds. Even the fall in most areas provides plenty of food sources (Some plants/trees/vines/flowers etc bloom in early fall). My personal exp is that supplemental food is most needed during the winter (for those that don’t migrate) & late spring/early summer when they’re desperately trying to feed all the little mouths.
