The human body is unable to accurately measure temperatures. This is because it uses a comparison between the temperature of the body part compared to the temperature it feels from the thing surrounding the body part. In this instance, it was comparing the temperature of the foot and the temperature of the water surrounding the foot. At 1:05, it is comparing a cold foot with normal temperature water, so the body found the water to be hot. At 1:10, it is comparing a hot foot with normal temperature water, so the body found the water to be cold. Note: A substance tends to contract when it gets colder, and it tends to expand when it gets hotter. In order to measure temperature accurately, Anders Celsius created a temperature measuring system using liquid mercury in a vial. The vial was then placed in freezing-point-temperature water which caused the liquid mercury to contract. The contraction of the liquid mercury made it smaller in the vial, so Mr. Anders Celsius called this 0 degrees with a mark at that point. The vial was then placed in boiling-point-temperature water which caused the liquid mercury to expand. The expansion of the liquid mercury made it larger in the vial, so Mr. Anders Celsius called this 100 degrees with a mark at that point. To name this temperature system, we call it Celsius which is named after Mr. Anders's last name. The basis of this system was water.

Until I first saw this, I used to think the formula in a thermometer was blood. I had no idea what mercury was until then (other than the name of the closest planet to our sun), let alone that it was in fact a deadly poison, which is why the substance that makes up a thermometer is so strong (to keep its users safe).
