dcvbhtrdf 1966, is long time a ago. Problem with you English is that you don't want to accept that you are weak. Hence you wont improve. Germans keep their mouth shut when they lose and accept it and work harder for the next time, and not start to bring excuses.
@dcvbhtrdf8 жыл бұрын
Jacob Jonm0 That's because most of the time you win you get quite lucky apart from WC2014 and when you lose you lose badly and can't complain i.e group stage exits with no wins in Euro2000 & 2004, 3-0 defeat in France 98 to Croatia, never looked like winning the WC2002 final and scraped your way through every knock-out round leading up to it against mediocre opponents (the type England never faced in that WorldCup), Euro2008 final was more 1-sided against you than the scoreline suggested. same as the semi-final vs Italy in 2012 etc...England don't have much luck and they've exited by penalty shootouts 6 times, Germany have relied on penalty shootouts in most successful competitions they've been in in order to get so far and then they either win the tournament or they're well beaten and go out in a way where they can't complain. England have had terrible decisions in 7 tournaments since 1986 alone resulting in them exiting (and by terrible I mean terrible, not this marginal type of decision Germany complain about on England's side in 1966)....and by the way it's not particularly a skill doing well in penalty shootouts, a penalty shootout is more of a lottery than skill, you have won way more than you've lost at the moment and England the other way round but it could easily turn around over time but even if we watch that happen that won't make England any better at them than Germany for that moment in time, it's a lot to do with gamesmanship and luck which England don't have much of either. I do prefer you to Portugal though (and prefer you to Argentina in the Maradona days and also in the Batistuta, Simeone etc..days...in other words I prefer you to massive cheats and I laughed my head off when you put Brazil in their place at WC2014).

Sadly, on paper, you are probably correct. But in terms of on-field performance, Euro 2000 was another major letdown and it would be the same general story (hope and optimism followed by the realization England wasn't really that good) for the next 16 or so years. Just when you think Ronaldo's 2006 PK to decide the WC match with Portugal was rock bottom, along comes 2010's 4-1 WC loss to Germany, followed by the terrible Euro 2016 showing in the Iceland game. It's been a very difficult cycle to watch especially knowing there WAS English talent on the pitch but getting the right mix of tactics, health, teamwork and other intangibles has eluded a succession of managers. Gareth Southgate seems to be pushing all of the right buttons at the moment...maybe his own personal rock bottom is what drives him as England manager.

England had a fantastic penalty taking roster in 96. They had 2 shootouts against Spain and Germany and missed 1 single penalty, and it wasn’t even a top 5 penalty taker. Germany however were and are just different class in shootouts. They went an absurd amount of time without missing a single penalty in shootouts in major tournaments, on top of that against Argentina Jens Lehman dived the right way for every penalty, he didn’t save every one but when your 1 not missing and 2 have a keeper somehow guessing the right way every time you’re gonna be hard to beat. Despite that I’d back Shearer, Platt, Pearce, Gascgoine, Sheringham against any non German lineup in a penalty shootout.

CR7 is an exception for Portugal but generally 3-4 major tournaments is about all you can expect, assuming your country even qualifies for the WC and Euros. That's why it has been so sad to see England knocked out during the group stage or at the first elimination game at so many major tournaments...some very underwhelming performances in years past. Here we are July 2021 and two semi-finals in a row is a distinct measure of progress. As I write this, hopefully Euro 2020 will go England's way but it's hardly a foregone conclusion. weird thing is both were awful teams yet just two years later at the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup, England survived the Group of Death featuring Sweden, Argentina and Nigeria while Germany went all the way to the final.... it's like Scotland making the final of the 2022 Qatar World Cup...

They were eliminated in the next game. This game was crucial for both teams at the time.
