Euro Nymphing Tips | Thoughts From The Mataura

The Mataura River is an iconic piece of NZ dry fly water, but like any river, once you start to implement some euro nymphing tactics you really get to unlock the fly fishing potential that lies beneath the surface. With lots of long, highly oxygenated riffles that always hold fish, and trickier slow and swirly pools, using a euro nymph approach really allows you to get more flies in front of fish without spooking them.
Chris Dore drinks a litre of the Mataura a day just to stay alive, it's that much a part of him, and in this clip he shows us just how effective euro nymphing is when you use the right approach with some great gear.

Well done Chris you make it look simple. I am still getting to grips with Czech 🇨🇿 Nymphing. Bought the entry Airflo 10 ft 4 weight but have had some really cool hook 🪝 with it. Like any thing more you practice better it becomes. Take care down there. Cheers Craig (CHB)

Chris, I trust all is well. I fish NZ and Aus, but am currently living in Aus. I am keen to get a Primal euro rod, would prefer 3wt for aus, will that be OK in NZ, including Turangi in winter? 10' or 10'6"? Cheers. Al.

Hey Al, that might be a bit undergunned for Turangi winter, definitely for the Tongariro, but some of the smaller streams you could get by. Probably want to go to 4wt to cover more water. The length is personal preference, we find people tend towards to the 10'6"...all of it also depends on your skills really :) Chris is guiding all month atm so might be a bit slow to reply - but we are sure he will get round to it :)
