Devin Olsen: "I was once a dyed in the wool suspension/strike indicator nymph fisherman. You couldn’t convince me there was a better way of catching numbers of fish on most trout rivers. After a few years of competing with Fly Fishing Team USA and a lot of comparisons, I’m convinced that European style nymphing is more effective in most water types. This video clip, explains the pros and cons of European vs suspension/strike indicator style nymphing."

Great video ! Finally, someone shows exactly what Euro Nymphing is ! Congratulations. So many other outfitters on KZbin fail to explain the basics. Having learned fly-fishing in saltwater, it was quite a surprise to me to discover Western fly-fishing with bobbers and weights. I always thought fly fishing was for purists. If you are going to add weights, bobbers / indicators then might as well just put a worm on a hook and call it good. Seriously, if you cannot tell that a fish is hitting your lure, go play backgammon.

Watching those trout jump was cool. Here is what I got from this video. If you fish small water, euro nymphing is best, if you fish big water, indicator nymphing is best.

Glad you enjoyed the jumping trout! Small water, Euro nymphing will dominate almost always. Large rivers Euro nymph very well also when there are obvious holding lies, structure, or sight fishing opportunities. But for sure, there are instances on big water that an indicator rig will fish very well.

Hey Gilbert. Great job on both of the Modern Nymphing videos. They are required watching, just as George Daniels' books are required reads. All the naysayers would do well to borrow a 10 ft 3wt rigged to euronymph and fish for a few hours with it. If you don't catch considerably more fish with this method, may I recommend golf or tennis. EN has changed my fishing forever. The struggle now is to fish other methods (dry, dry dropper, etc) instead of just always going to EN. Thanks for these videos and for helping to make us all better anglers. Tight lines and say hi to Lance and Devin.

Very well done and enjoyable video. I fished with old-timers that did the same thing 40 years ago with florescent sections on their leaders dead drifting up close with a nearly tight line. The longer I fish, the more I see the same things "developed" that someone else already figured out a long time ago. Nowadays there are just so many more outlets to disseminate information. Nothing really revolutionary in fly fishing since Selective Trout and graphite fly rods - this technique included. Also, a little over the top with splashy mending and using a big plastic indicator. One can fish a yarn indicator with no disturbance at all, but I wouldn't claim it is more effective. You definitely hit the nail on the head.....each technique has its place. You need more Lance in this video!

Hey Bill, thanks for the comment. I certainly appreciate the earlier generations and their discoveries in the sport. Without them we in no way would be where we are today, and I'm very grateful for that. I think that if you watch the full film "Modern Nymphing" you will find many details applied within this technique that may, or may not have been previously applied by previous fly fishermen, but that are instrumental in increasing ones hook up rate. This video is just a short excerpt from the full film, I think you will find the rest of the film interesting as well... oh, and there's lot's more Lance in the full video ;-) Full video available at: vimeo.com/ondemand/modernnymphing

Hello Gilbert, nice video! It is my opinion that there are situations in which Euro Nymphing works better, other in which a strike indicator works better. A wool strike indicator makes no disturbance and can hold at least 3,5mm tungsten bead. As you said, In fast waters Euro Nymphing is better, but if you need distance or in slow water, a strike indicator is better. If you fish with strong wind which blows agains the current direction, Euro nymphing can become a pain in the ass, even if you keep the rod in a low position. I love to fish in New Zealand, and there Euro Nymphing is not the best method...probably because using that technique you need to stay too close to the fish. Instead Euro Nymphing works great -was born???-in many rivers where you can fish graylings (more common in our european rivers), which are harder to spook.
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed, no one method is perfect for all situations. I have personally found that although I fish indicator rigs on occasion, the majority of my nymphing is Euro nymphing because of the advantages I've witnessed on the river. You are correct in your comment, battling the wind can be tough, slow water requiring long presentations can benefit from indicators as well. No doubt there is a time and a place. Thanks for commenting!

@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 5 жыл бұрын
Yes Fred, you are correct. However, in my experience the situations where an indicator rig is a more effective are not very common. For many people it comes down to how they'd like to fish, not whether or not one method is going to catch more fish over the other. If this were the case there would be far more people ditching the indicator in most situations and going with a tight line nymphing system.

I use a tuck cast,add weight as needed for water depth and speed, and I don't use a sighter,my visual point is where line and leader connect.The object is to gain the bottom as quickly as possible and stay in direct contact with your nymphs throughout the drift.When I fish big,deep,fast water,I use flat monofilament instead of floating line.Try it,it works!....BTW, enjoyed your video.

@phildlight

Half of the issues w/ an indicator are eliminated if you don't use a 4 inch diameter plastic ball! For example, a tiny 1/8 piece of strike putty applied to the leader in a long strip is barely larger than the leader and doesn't cause any more surface disturbance than the flies entering the water. Using a traditional nymphing rig, you can also high stick/tight line (same as euro nymphing really) when you need to or the water allows it. Fishing spooky fish is a lot harder with a euro type setup as you generally need to be closer to the fish. Basically, with a more traditional setup (rod length, fly line, leader etc.) you have far more versatility. You can switch between dries, emergers or nymphs as you need to, can fish more water at longer distances without spooking fish and can fish euro style where the water suits it. IMO, traditional indicator fishing is far superior to euro style. I honestly think euro nymphing is a big buzzword, hyped up current trendy thing to get into.

Hey Philip, thanks for the thought-out response. That's exactly what all my friends who had never before tried Euro nymphing used to say ;-) I'm happy you've found what works for you. That's what really matters in the sport. However, most, if not all of the points you mentioned in your comment are inaccurate, but we all fish the way we choose to for what ever reasons we see fit. The good news is, you're obviously catching fish... and by the sound of it you are competent enough that you don't feel like you need to improve yourself any further by venturing into the unknown, but rather prefer to judge from a distance like many critics. But honestly, if you are enjoying your time on the water, I'm happy for you. If you'd like to give Euro nymphing a chance, the right way, (sorry strike putty on a 9' leader isn't anywhere near as effective as Euro nymphing for a number of reasons) and then have the same conversation, I'm open to it. Until then, happy fishing, and I hope you continue to find joy in what you are doing. Have a great day.
@phildlight

I think the problem I have is that this is presented as a "vs" type argument for why one style is better than another. The reality is, that is entirely dependent on the water, fish and location. I'd like to see someone try euro nymphing on our spring creeks. You get within 20 feet of the fish and they're down. Realistically, dries during certain hatches and scuds or sow bugs (or matching whatever hatch) with NO indicator are your only chance there. Typically for those fish, you have one shot on the first cast to trick one. Once they see line in the water they're done. On that water, there is no way euro nymphing would be appropriate. You constantly have to change up your rig depending on the particular stretch you're on. Same with big water (which you do mention) like the bighorn. You simply can't get within range on some holes to tight line it. As far as strike putty, or indicator/typical rod setup, half the time i'm nymphin water I'm essentially euro nymphing. The indicator isn't even in the water. Indicator doesn't necessarily mean big floaty thing. It's just a visual indicator (like the colored sight line on a euro rig). It's how you fish it (tight line or long cast/mending etc.) that matters and I'm more interested in the versatility to do both! I'm not opposed to trying new things or trying to improve my fishing. I do it all the time. I just know what will and wont work on the water I (that's me personally) fish. My point is really about versatility and personal preference/situation. I personally would much rather have the ability to change up or high stick ("euro nymphing") when appropriate and not be hindered by a specific rod, fly line and leader. To each his own. As long as you're having fun is right. This video, however, is more of a "my way is better" presentation.
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 6 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more on the fact that there is no one perfect solution for all water types and situations. You are spot on! At this point, I think the only thing we don't agree on is which technique(s) is more versatile. I'd argue that for most, possibly excluding technical spring creeks and overly large river systems, as you have pointed out, but the majority of other water types you are going to benefit yourself by fishing Euro nymphing techniques, not simply tight line as you've mentioned a few times. Tight line nymphing will catch fish, but the sag created in your system will also minimize your success compared to Euro nymphng. So, if all you fish are spring creeks and large rivers, dry flies and indicators might be better. However, if you're looking to catch more fish on MOST other lotic water types I'd give Euro nymphing a shot. The drag created by a suspension device is more detrimental than the surface disturbance caused by an indicator, and let's be honest dry fly fishing is the most visually rewarding method of fly fishing, but most of the time it's not the most effective, and since you are unaware, you can fish dries, emergers, and streamers all on a Euro rig extremely effectively and in many instances more effectively than you can using traditional methods. Talk about a delicate dry fly presentation! Throwing dries on a 20'+ leader! Hard to get more delicate than that. Throwing streamers on a long leader avoiding all the conflicting currents between you and your fly with the help of the long rod and long leader, etc. These topics and many others are covered in the follow up film Modern Nymphing Elevated. Not to mention, this is the chosen technique by the best competitive fly anglers in the world should at a minimum peak your interest in looking into the real details of the technique. So yes, this film is a "vs" look at the two techniques for a reason. Euro nymphing is far superior at presentation, strike detection, and hooking percentage over all other nymphing techniques in MOST (certainly not all) water types. I invite you to study up on the technique before settling on your conclusion. Let me know if you're interested in the details and I'll give you a free digital rental of both films for a day. Then, we can chat more. Until then, I truly hope you continue to enjoy your time on the water! Have a great day!

Nice video. Bottom line; when 'nymphing', with or without an indicator, key to success is minimizing the slack line between rod tip and flies/nymphs throughout your entire drift.
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 7 жыл бұрын
Very important indeed. That will help achieve a dead drift for sure.
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing 5 жыл бұрын
Wrong. When fishing deep and/or fast water (most water really) if you don't have enough line ABOVE (upstream) the fly/flies/indicator in your mend with a little slack, you will drag. Therefore, your flies will come up out of the strike zone. This is a common mistake most fly anglers make. Most anglers do not mend correctly, either. Will you still catch fish? Yes. But, you will not be as effective. Your presentation will not be perfect. I have fished a lot of places across the Midwest. It's the same everywhere. I have clients who have fished for 30-40 years awestruck when they finally see the results of proper mending/nymphing. That key to success is ONLY better in Euro nymphing (no indicator). This is not the key in either. Proper presentation is the key in any nymphing situation/style.
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing 5 жыл бұрын
It's simple. A tight line while indicator fishing and a bad mend will take your flies out of the strike zone. An experienced nympher and guide would be able to figure that out. I think it sounds like you need more experience and to be able to read and comprehend these techniques. My successful clients would be happy to show you.

@@IntoTheWildFlyFishing Exactly. Sorry, Paul. This guy is correct. For longer drifts and over larger flows, no slack means drag. Great video, but it kind of reminds me of an infomercial with someone all tangled up in a garden hose or trying to tote a double arm load of tools to do some thing that can be done with the new and improved multi-task tool. ;) The instructor on the video is working the line with a big loop to purposely slam the indicator to the water making a large splash. Most fly fisherman don't typically do this. And they don't cast directly on top of where they think the fish is. Normally the cast is 10 - 20 ft ahead of where the fish is to allow both for your flies to sink to position and minimize spooking the fish when your rig hits the water. But overall it does do a good job of demonstrating the Euro-nymphing technique. Especially love the part where the fish almost jumps in to the camera. Would love to have that happen to one of my video shots and crop a picture out of it for display! Pretty cool!
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, and glad you enjoyed this excerpt from the full film Modern Nymphing. I think most fishermen would be surprised how their cast/mend/drift/etc look when slowed down to 96 fps like this footage. There may be some exaggerating taking place to demonstrate the point, but I think if we are realistic with the way most anglers fish, it's probably more impactful than what is being shown here ;-) All joking aside, there is a place for indicator fishing, and when done correctly it will definitely catch fish. However, one should also look at the other negative effects introduced to drift caused by an indicator rig along with the potential surface disturbance it can cause. But really, who doesn't love a good infomercial ;-)

I totally agree that there is a place for no indicator. Especially in gin clear water with high pressured mature fish. Regardless of how soft you land your indicator, these fish have "seen it all before" and will run and hide until you leave.

@GilbertRowley

Hey Scott, for sure the sighter plays a role as a depth gauge and can be very helpful in knowing how deep your flies are drifting. In addition to that, the more you practice with this leader system the more you will gradually start to see the sighter jump, stop, hesitate, etc before you ever feel the take. But indeed, if you feel something before you see the sighter move, you should set the hook.

Why is it called Euronymphing. I have been flyfishing for 58 years and nymphing without a strike indicator is how I learned. I have used indicators, but dead drifting nymphs without an indicator allows better control in my humble opinion
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 7 жыл бұрын
Great question Glenn, it is called Euro Nymphing partially because of the leader system used. There is a hi-vis mono section tied into the leader called a sighter, and very long overall leader lengths (commonly exceeding 20' in length). The leader system has many benefits that are explained in depth in the film Modern Nymphing. There is much more to it than that, but in some ways it is probably very similar to how you've been fishing all these years. Way to be ahead of the curve Glenn ;-)

Thanks for the info. I kind of thought that the only difference was the hi-vis section of leader. Might have to try it. I've just always watched my line like you see in the Joe Humpheys videos on nymphing. Small indicators do exist and have their place. However, with a straight, tight line nymphing rig you are in direct connection with your flies, not an indicator, or split shot. A small indicator will reduce surface disturbance, but it won't help with strike detection the way Euro nymphing does. But don't take me wrong, I have a few small indicators and when the water is uniform or I want to get VERY small flies to the bottom I sometimes fish indicators. Whatever it takes to get into them, right?!?! ;-)

Have to say most people wouldn't pick a bubble float as a strike indicator - a bit of wool, or piece of foam, creating no more surface disturbance than a tungsten nymph hitting the water, and significantly less than say a falling leaf. Just something that occurred to me watching the video - who's slapping plastic bubble floats about with a fly rod. I know they exist, but I'm not sure what market they're serving!
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley Жыл бұрын
Interesting perspective. Here in the Western US I see more bubble floats than anything else. I dare say 10-1, easily. I know there are anglers who fish smaller, more delicate indicators on small streams. This will for sure help their success rate, but the smaller and more subtle they go, the less weight it can suspend. Waterlogged wool is as big of a pain as anything. But yes, to your point a smaller indicator made of finer material will spook less fish.

Thanks for the video. Apparently I have been euro nymphing since the 1980s. I always prefer a dry fly. If they are not hitting dries I will try some wet. I never liked the idea of bobber fishing. The strike indicator, "bobber" makes casting weird. I have used small strike indicators, not the bobber type the smaller non plastic ones, but often got lazy or did not bring a strike indicator and just switched to a nymph and did not add an indicator. I would use where the leader met the line as my strike indicator. European nymphing? Bobberless nymphing? I do not look mean to say that nymphs or wets in general are inferior to dry fly fishing. Many nymph fishermen would look down their nose at me for tying on a home tied mop fly or a san juan worm or some other worm imitation. Just follow the rules on your water and I have no problem with you.

Okay, lets get real. With either method, you are not usually throwing your lure directly on top of the fish. You are casting upstream, letting your lure drift over the fish you're after. Any minor splash in the water upstream is not going to spook a target fish downstream, so your primary objection to the indicator is hogwash.

Indicator Nymphing has another problem... When you have and indicator the current will typically pull faster on the actual indicator then the nymph... Normally you'll have a faster current on the top vs the bottom.... Hence less control...

A yarn indicator still tethers you to the surface currents which alters your drift while still having a lesser effective strike detection method. However, when thinking about surface disturbance alone, yes a yarn indicator can help.

I recently inherited an Orvis CFO III click reel (made in England). Would this be adequate for a euro rig? I'm considering getting a 10'6" Cortland Competition 3 weight rod and was wondering if it would pair well. Not sure if it would have enough room to spool on the line for this type of fishing. I have other reels but figured the gentleman I got it from would have wanted me to fish it. Great video!

Thomas Nelson to be honest, it’s hard to say until you have the reel on hand with line on it. The balance is weight dependent, and since the CFO III is made for 3-5 wt rods it will probably work great, but it’s hard to say.

Awesome video. I’m trying to learn how to perform euro nymphing. This might be a silly question, but when you are euro nymphing, are you holding the nymphs in the water column, or are you just following the nymphs drifting through the water column? How do you prevent the flies from snagging the bottom? Best regards.
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Nate, great question. When Euro nymphing most of the time you are allowing the flies to dead drift through the water column. You achieve this by adjusting how much weight you are fishing with. The weight is in the flies, not split shot, so you can simply adjust how deep you are getting by how heavy your flies are. Since it is a tight line technique, sometimes the contact with the flies allows you to raise them over obstructions such as rocks on the riverbed, but you are still doing all you can to allow your nymphs to drift close to the same speed as the currents nearest the bottom of the river. In a couple months we are launching Modern Nymphing 2 which will go into greater depth on this subject. Thanks!

But, to answer your question, yes it can be very effective, especially in fast water. Deep water can be challenging, but the straight tippet and weighted flies get down quicker than other rigs and allow for a better drift. Hope this answers your question!

I have been fly fishing for two years. In my first 5 months I used every kind of indicator available. As soon as I took it off and kept my line tight with good drifts, I caught my first trout and never used another indicator. I would like to know though. Is there a significant advantage to adding a fluorescent orange section to my line and then tying a tapered leader onto it? I like the idea of that and it wouldn’t change my fishing style but would it be a great benefit?

Bravo! Great video! I typically fish using the dry-dropper method even when not expecting strikes on the surface. I use the dry fly as an indicator which doesn't cause as much surface disturbance. I use fluorocarbon connected to a tungsten bead head nymph to get deep. What is the advantage of the euro style over a dry-dropper rig? Thanks!
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent question Stephen. First of all, no doubt dry-dropper is an extremely effective method and a ton of fun to fish. In fact, in Modern Nymphing 2 which is in production right now we cover how to fish a dry-dropper rig on a Euro leader! Extremely effective! To answer your question, a dry-dropper rig is still a suspension device which still tethers you to the faster surface currents which can often times cause your dry fly to move faster than the slower currents near the bottom where your nymph is drifting. This results in your nymph being towed along by your dry fly faster than the currents near the bottom. This will both elevate your nymph out of the strike zone, and cause it to move faster than the current near the bottom, thus killing your "dead drift". With that said, there are times when a dry-dropper setup can out perform a Euro rig, particularly on very windy days when it is hard to keep your sighter and leader from blowing all around. Also, as I'm sure you are already aware, if there are fish looking up at all it can be a ton of fun mixing in the occasional surface eat ;-) Hope this helps!

I love the idea if no indicator but I am wondering how difficult it is to spot the Euro line at farther distances? I do wear polarized prescription glasses but still find it difficult to spot a strike at times even with a yarn indicator.
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 6 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. One thing you will have in your favor is that this technique is usually fished at close distances. This is not a long line technique. The only time that I find it difficult to spot the sighter is when I float the sighter on an upstream approach. The other times the sighter is off the water and usually very easy to see at distances of 30 feet and closer which is typically the distance we fish. Although, I understand it's different for everyone which means you'll probably have to get out on the water and give it a shot. A couple last things that help, carry Loon Payette Paste with you and grease your sighter and upper leader often. This will help it float higher on upstream approaches, and help it pull off the water easier when fishing up and across. Lastly, change out your hi-vis sighter material anytime you are finding it hard to see. UV rays will dull the material over time making it harder and harder to see as time goes on. Hope this helps!

@GilbertRowley

recipe 4 recovery great question! As you repeatedly drift through a holding lie you will notice that either you are not hitting the bottom at all during the drift (not deep enough, too light), hitting the bottom early in the drift (flies too heavy), or occasionally hitting the bottom near the bottom third of your drift (just right in most situations). By adjusting as you go you can adapt your drift to be ideal for each situation you come across. In comparison, this should be the same approach with an indicator rig to determine if you are achieving the proper depth. The main difference is the adjustment method to the rig. With an indicator rig you will need to slide your indicator up or down, and possibly add or subtract weight to your rig. With Euro Nymphing you can often times simply raise or lower your Rod tip during the drift, adjust your cast, or tie on a heavier or lighter fly. For me, my Euro adjustments happen on the fly which is not the case with an indicator rig. Check out the full film Modern Nymphing (link in description) for a much more in-depth description. You benefit from longer rod when do euro nymphing. Empiric rule is "your normal dry fly rod + 1,5' or 2'). So, where i'd normaly use 9' rod for dries, I use 11' for nymphing. On small streams with obstacles 8'-8'6" is ok. Shorter rod limit your ability to steer fly rig around the obstacles to prevent snags
@cr113
@cr113 6 жыл бұрын
Alex: I've recently switched to nymphing without an indicator on small mountain streams in the SE. I've tried a 9'6" nymphing rod and it's almost impossible to move around without constantly hitting tree branches. I only rig one nymph and make a lot of casts 45 degrees across and upstream (vs straight upstream czech style). That extends your range with the short rod. I usually rig about 5' of 5x from the sighter to the fly.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! If you add weight to your rig you are then directly connected to the weight instead of the flies. This can dull your strike detection. There is a solution to your problem... fish lighter flies. You dictate the weight of your rig, the technique doesn’t. It is important to achieve depth, but if you are dredging the bottom and loosing flies consistently you should switch out your flies for lighter ones.

@@GilbertRowley thank you, does this mean that the flies are not meant to touch bottom during the drift? Wouldnt this be limiting? What if you want to present a big stonefly nymph or a larger caddis?
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 5 жыл бұрын
During an ideal drift your nymphs should be near the bottom, but if you are consistently hanging up, regardless of your rig you should find a way to shed some weight. Fish rarely pick invertebrates off the stream bottom, they are drifting feeders who happen to find most of their meals near the river bottom. Additionally, you can tie or buy flies in all different weights. I can tie a stonefly nymph without a bead or lead that will barely sink below the surface. Or, I can add a brass bead that will get a little deeper, or a tungsten bead that will sink very quickly. My point here is the size of the fly doesn’t dictate the weight or sink rate of the fly. Try fishing lighter flies that still get near the bottom and you’ll catch more fish and loose less flies. Best of luck!

can you explain why some euro nymphers use a fly line and others dont?I know the major manufacturers now produce a level line floater for this purpose.Surely one can just connect the butt of the leader to their backing?Also wouldnt having fly line in the guides cause slack?
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 7 жыл бұрын
A Euro fly line is advantageous for a couple reasons. It is much easier to handle when stripping in slack and stripping in fighting fish. If you've ever tried to strip in straight mono during a good fish you know the struggle. Backing is even worse to handle. With that said, I Euro nymphed for over 5 years with an extra long leader and made it work. It's just a little more of a pain. Also, the Euro nymph fly line allows you to fish further away from yourself. Controlling a mono leader past 20' out is doable, but pretty tricky. A Euro nymph fly line is the happy medium between straight mono and a floating fly line that allows you to manage longer drifts as well as helping with casting. Don't get me wrong, you can apply this technique without a Euro specific fly line, I did for years as I mentioned, but it does become more effective with one. Hope this answers your question.

Do you add split shots to euro?
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, usually not since we tie our nymphs with tungsten beads of all sizes. If we need more weight we usually tie on a heavier fly. However, if circumstance calls for small flies only, you can add split shot to your rig usually on the point below your flies like a drop shot rig. Not as effective, but can used if you feel it's necessary.

High sticking without and indicator. Been doing that for 35 years and the Europeans had nothing to do with it. I have never had a problem with the indicator spooking the fish. If you can't get it off the water without spooking the fish you need to work on your casting skills.

Gilbert Rowley Thank u. I'm just starting so what's the rule of thumb on how much tippit u use after your leader?
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Rudy, there are differing opinions about that but I find easiest to cast with about 4 feet of tippet below the tippet ring to the first fly, then 20"-24" to the second fly. Lance fishes about 6 feet to his first fly which he finds preferable, so really just try a few different lengths between 4'-6' and see what works the best for you.

Makes it look easy but it's not. Euro nymphing is extremely difficult to master. I'll fish the same piece of water with both techniques and catch many more fish on an indicator rig. I believe that it's more effective for those who know it but for me it's almost impossible to both detect a strike and understand the drift of a euro rig. Very counter intuitive.
@GilbertRowley
@GilbertRowley 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, thanks for the comment. I'm sorry to hear you've struggled with the technique. I hope this comes across as a question and not a critique but can I ask where you learned how to Euro Nymph? You mentioned that you've tried it with minimal success... Have you watched the full instructional film Modern Nymphing? Have you had one on one instruction from someone proficient with the technique? I'm curious of your background since most, when taught correctly have very different results than what you've experienced. I've introduced dozens of people to this technique, both friends and guide clients, and after just a time or two on the water they are often times having much more success than they ever did with an indicator rig. It takes much longer to "master" the technique for sure, but the results are usually quick to come. I'd love to discuss this more with you over email if you think if would be of value: gilbert rowley (@) gmail dot com. Thanks!

I've had very good teachers. One who has taught many quality and winning competitive anglers including George Daniel. Euro technique is very similar to golf for me in that when I took lessons I would drive it straight and long but as soon as I went off on my own I couldn't even hit the ball. I actually don't really enjoy the technique because I love casting and mending and line control and all of that but I would like to master it for when nothing else is working.

Euro nymphing was developed since Euro anglers think flyfishing should be an organized sport. They do not allow lead weights or indicators etc and so they developed this method to present a nymph in competition. It is not as effective as high stick nymphing or single handed indicator nymphing by a skilled angler. It's become somewhat of another hyped marketing scam.

I hope you give it a shot sometime, you’ll likely be surprised. Until then, happy fishing with your current methods. I hope they bring you much success.

"Euro nymphing out performs the suspension device." Bzzzzzzzzzt. Wrong. If you are ONLY fish slow moving, one speed currents then POSSIBLY it can. I've been fly fishing and guiding for 20 years. Indicator fishing is far superior to Euro nymphing in almost EVERY instance. It's ludicrous to make that statement. Both are effective in their particular instances. But, Euro nymphing is rarely going to out perform indi fishing. Try steelheading (or lake run nymphing) in the Yoop. No way, Jose. Either you don't know how to indi nymph or you're trying to see Euro set ups.
@GilbertRowley

Into The Wild Fly Fishing Guide Service sounds like you found what works for you, and I’m happy for that. Interesting how we both have the same opinion about our favored technique. I can see very few instances where I’d prefer a suspension device, and you can see very few where you’d prefer a Euro setup. My only question would be, are our opinions based off experience, or preference? Devin Olsen who makes that statement in the video was a die hard indicator fisherman for years, over a decade, before he saw and EXPERIENCED the advantages of Euro Nymphing. So my only question for you would be have you spent a decade doing each, fishing all over the world, and decided on which you prefer for most situations? I only ask because most people who share your opinion have barely dabbled in Euro Nymphing, if that. Their opinions are based off from a sense of pride that tells them they have to fight for their preferred technique even if it isn’t actually superior, but merely all they’ve ever really done. Might not be you, but 99% of people who make the comment you made fit in that category. At the end of the day, I’m glad you found what works for you. I prefer to keep learning, experimenting, and growing... which sometimes means I have to let go of what’s worked in the past in order to improve my future. And for the record, indicator Nymphing is typically superior in “slow moving, one speed current”, not Euro Nymphing. That comment alone makes your knowledge of Euro Nymphing a bit suspect. Sounds like you fish very large rivers, and have found your preference with an indicator, which is great. Have a good day!
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing
@IntoTheWildFlyFishing 4 жыл бұрын
@@GilbertRowley Obviously, experience. I have done both for decades. Preference plays no part in guiding or the constant searching for better ways to put clients on fish. I will have clients Euro nymph/dead drift/high stick (all are different but similar techniques) in certain flows or runs. I know how effective Euro nymphing can be. No is disputing that. But, to claim it surpasses indicator fishing is absurd. It's better to be well versed in both. You would be in for a LONG year, here in the Yoop trying to Euro nymph huge lake run fish in heavy currents across many current tongues. You'd be switching over to an indi after 20 minutes. There are places for both methods. Small river systems, simple flows, slow deep run where you can target holding fish with a Euro rig is money. However, I can literally have my clients do the exact same with an indi rig. It's not about preference. It's about knowledge, experience, years on the water, instances, and fish in the net. Thanks. You too.
