It is Beethoven's happiest concerto. Personally, I don't like the pianist become a conductor. But it is without any doubt an excellent interpretation, by one of the best pianists. More than that, Barenboim is one of the musicians most faithful to the score, with impeccable interpretations, from someone who truly knows and loves music. One of the best musicians of all time, alongside a Toscanini, Furtwängler, Karajan or Rubinstein

That's the spirit, there's no need for a conductor, the pianist can hack both. And cash in both fee$. But with Barenboim it ain't about a fee, It's about sheer joy and glee, spreading unbelievably positive and contangious energy. And WHAT an "unbuttoned", fancy free dress code at that. The musicians CAN breathe & play with ease.

I love all of Beethoven’s piano concerti. But the C minor one is a favorite. I think Beethoven modeled this wonderful concerto on Mozart’s C minor piano concerto, his number 24. The first movement in both these concerts end in similar codas. Beethoven’s concludes the movement with a repetitive extraordinary crescendo, which starts with pianissimo and with each iteration grows and grows until a fortissimo explosion ends the movement with the fortissimo explosion of enormous energy. Mozart ends his first movement in a soft piano passage full of pain of quiet meditation on the tragedy of life.
