I listen to this masterpiece in tears, shed by a deeply moved heart! Thank you so much wonderful Bach, Herreweghe, all the great musicians, who perform so well, and obviously from their heart! Every soloist a gem by themselves - and I truly adore you, pronouncing the German so perfect, that I can't hear, that anyone of you is not a speaking/singing in his/her mother-tounge!!! I understand every word - and more so - it is as if I finally understand the emotion of Bach and the spiritual sense of the words. To me personally a true Christmas-miracle! ... und danket Gott, für dies, was Er getan! through each of you!

Compare this one to other recordings on KZbin and come to your own conclusion. But most of all enjoy the music you are listening to regardless of what other's opinions may be 🙂

A thoroughly unmusical statement especially saying altos sound like tenors. Bach was not woke. It's his scoring.

The word" Woke" did not exist in the 1800's... It was conventional in those days to use contratenors or male alto's (falsetto's if you like) because women were not allowed to sing in choirs in churches...I know this sounds ridiculous now...Bach wrote specifically those high parts for male soprano's or boys...never seen Farinelli?
