Bob, in case you’re not aware, Volvo issued a TSB for excessive oil consumption that may affect this engine. Our 2016 XC60 has the same base engine and had to have the piston rings replaced (at Volvo’s expense). If your engine serial number qualifies, the dealer will perform an oil change, seal the engine, and have you put 750-1000 miles on it before draining the oil and rechecking the level. The piston work is a 2 day job. Might want to search the Internet for more info as it’s on every Volvo forum I know of as well as the NHTSA website.

I'm on my 7th Volvo a 2010 V70 R-Design. Have thought about moving up to an XC90 primarily for easy access (getting older) but have heard a lot about issues with the vehicle. Last time at Volvo I asked the service writer what he sees the most of coming in for service and it was a quick XC90. I'm just not 100% confident in that 4 cylinder engine and if it had the old, reliable, 3.2 straight six I would probably have one in the driveway now. Still, they are a good-looking vehicle and I would like to be convinced otherwise. ;-)
