Eurofighter Typhoon Weapons Package by MBDA at Dubai Airshow 2015

At Dubai Airshow 2015, Russ Martin, military advisor at MBDA, and Tommaso Pani, head of anti-ship, gave us an overview of the MBDA weapons package available for the Eurofigther Typhoon: The Meteor and ASRAAM air to air missiles, the dual mode Brimstone air to ground missile, the Storm Shadow cruise missile and the Marte-ER anti-ship missile.

are the missiles unlimited? I mean, if one country bought one Typhoons and they already dropped the noms,are they replaceable? free of charges? looks very expensive

All replaced for free - just return the old missile after use and a new one is sent by return post.

Missiles are hideously expensive; I can't think of anything the West makes that costs less than US$100 000 a round-and that's for something shoulder launched. Tomahawk costs around half a mil, SM2 and ESSM around a million [about the standard cost for a SAM], on the higher anti-ABM end, SM-3 or 6 [I forget] costs around 6 million a shot. There's a reason Tomahawk hasn't even been carried by submarines let alone fired from one, for a couple of decades now-putting them in special cells costs more and means they can only be launched from submarines and most ships go to sea with only half a complement of missiles [if that]. New Zealand's ANZAC frigates have been sailing round the world's oceans for years now, with it's silos completely empty. Imagine what it costs to fill all 96 cells on an Arleigh Burke with ESSM [4 per cell, a million each], SM-2 and SM-3/6? Jesus...I can't do that kind of math. Maybe up to half a billion dollars worth of missiles-on one ship. And the U.S Navy has over 70 of that class, being it's workhorse. How the U.S does it though, is they lease the missiles-and only actually pay for them if they get used, which is smart.

Elizabeth not sure what you mean? Missiles are done to fit a standard NATO fit. Apache can hold both brimstone and hellfire. As for typhoons they're an aeroplane . One wouldn't buy the aeroplane for its missiles one would simply buy the missiles to fit your aeroplane . For example, sidewinders were literally removed from usa air force jets and provided to the uk for use during the falklands conflict in 1982. Which was rather appreciated as you can imagine about all the enthusiastic aviators out there and the sea harrier. Americans were buying sea harrier for 50,000 dollars and that was the civilians lol.

The Ramjet was designed by Bayer (a German company) and the war head too. And we are quite unfortunate to be stuck with the Mica‘s overworked seeker - the German K/X-Band seeker (newly developed) would possibly have been more resistant to jamming. Politics

Typhoon is an outstanding aircraft but costs £50k an hour to operate. There is no need to use it against ground targets in low threat environments. Get something cheaper for that role

Hi Nick Turner, I remember the figure from an old Flight International that compared the costs of operating similar combat aircraft e.g. the Rafale and Gripen-E. I think the figure included all operating and capital costs as well as in this link: www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmhansrd/cm090721/text/90721w0017.htm which quotes the much higher figure of 90K. I guess the number varies with fuel costs, modifications etc. To be fair I have also seen much lower figures as in: defenseissues.net/tag/eurofighter-typhoon-cost/ which quotes 18K. Neither of these links is at all current, so the current figure could be a lot different!

Adopting another aircraft altogether is usually more expensive than running 1 less efficient type in multiple roles.
