Cossacks were such great skilled & devoted warriors, everyone today wants to claim their origin, but people of the original Ukrainian lands KNOW going back even further, this history is theirs (controversy among varied scholars & ethnic groups remains ongoing) and long before Russian rule 'stole' this history to MAKE & CLAIM it part of their own. Cossacks took a little from many different cultural disciplines like Ghingas Khan horseman of the far east & the Norse Vikings of the far North/West, etcetera, to create the best warriors, swordsmen, horseman, Marshall arts, dancers, singers... and probably even best lovers of the world... ;)

I love Russia I love Ukraine and it's people.. I love the Cossack good decent people who keep their traditions faith and religion alive.. where i live I'm my birth country niether side of my family originate from my birth country apart from one grandfather who was english i never got to meet him But anyway other than myself and my grandmother ( one my mothers side) none of my family have any religious beliefs ( apart from when their on their death beds and I've not met that many people of/in my birth country with any faith/religion mind you it's not surprising what with what goes on in churches in england But i don't go to church but i still have faith/religious beliefs... they were never ukrainian, ukrainians as ethnic group appeared in the 19 century only, cossacks never called themself ukrainian, they called themself mostly khakhly because this was the name of their haircut.Kazak is a turkic word though.They came from the territory that is today within ukraine but modern day ukraine have also territories that were never called ukraine before, there was left bank ukraine and right bank ukraine, cossacks lived also outside those areas, around modern cities like donetsk, lugansk, zaporozhe, kherson, the territories were called wild fields and not ukraine, later also novorossya as it was conquerred by russia from the ottomans.There was never an ukrainian autonomy either, only hetmanate which was incorporated into russia in the 17 century, it was removed because of betrayel of hetmans like mazepa.The language you call ukrainian is a russian dialect, ukrainian language was invented by bolsheviks in the 20 century.

Ethnic Russian territory was just too big for their main goal, control. Similar view had communists in Yugoslavia, after the WW2: the smaller Serbia, the stronger Yugoslavia (SFRJ)...
