Because its 2024 not 1424... you do know slavery is illegal now (well, at least in the west). Actually most innovation comes from defence. That's right, killing people as efficiently as possible is driving innovation. Kids today want to become doctors, first responders, scientists? No, social media influencers, gamers & KZbinrs. I'm certainly not keen on becoming a worker drone, soldier or sex slave - that's where're heading. Hmmm, I wonder why fertility rates are plummeting in the west???? BTW, why do you think we have to choose? Do you think we could have a healthy planet, a thriving economy AND a prosperous & just society? Perhaps a lack of ambition to serve society not profit from it? Perhaps, with the right mind set, everybody can enjoy quality of life irrespective of income level. I suspect there will always be richer & poorer people in the world, but I think society can do better than it is now. The science is there, the tech is available, we just need to political & social justice will to implement this equitably. Check out the terms Sustainable Development, Agenda 2030 & 17 SDGs, New Urban Agenda & the Sendai Framework for Hazard Risk Reduction - where society should be heading generally (it includes economic prosperity). For some reason society thinks it needs to choose. It doesn't, we can have both. ALL human systems depend entirely on healthy ecological systems - we HAVE TO have both. This is the challenge for this generation, for the sake of the next generation & a happy future.

Sustainable development = meeting the needs of current generations without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This requires - healthy planet - healthy economy - healthy & just society - respect for human rights, strong social protection institutions & justice etc Why do people today think we need to choose between this or that - why aren't they thinking & innovating on how to have a prosperous society AND a prosperous planet? Divisive politics perhaps? Greedy & selfish motivations of oligarchs and financial & political elites at the expense of everyone else? Perhaps one reason why fertility rates are crashing in the west? Good luck building empires with no worker drones, soldiers & sex slaves.
