Europe at war? | Highlights

Five years after President Ursula van der Leyen announced the build-up of a “geopolitical commission”, the context has dramatically changed with Europe facing two wars in its immediate neighbourhood. In light of current conflicts, such as the war in Gaza and Ukraine, what kind of geopolitical actor does Europe want to be? Joined by Frans Timmermans, Tom Middendorp and Nathalie Tocci we investigate what a more Geopolitical Europe would mean and entail.
For the past two years, Europe has had to respond to the invasion of one of its immediate neighbours - Ukraine. Although blindsided, European leaders were able to react with measures which would have been unthinkable a few years before. Despite these ground-breaking steps, Europe’s ability to make an impact in the field, militarily or diplomatically, is being questioned. Can Europeans agree on a common narrative when confronted with conflicts of this magnitude? Can Europe speak the language of power while ensuring Rule of Law and democracy within its borders?
In the Face of War - European Dialogue
“In the Face of War - European Dialogue” is initiated by Institut Français and organised in partnership with De Balie, Institut français NL, Arte, Ouest France, Le Grand Continent, and the European Cultural Foundation. The project aims to foster dialogue and debate surrounding the upheavals in Europe instigated by the war in Ukraine. Following a project launch in Prague, and a second edition in autumn 2023, five events will be held during the course of 2024, in Warsaw, Sofia, Helsinki, Amsterdam and Rennes, with others to follow in 2025.

@de Balie: Really, this is the best you can do in terms of divers opinions? Come on de Balie, please invivite people with a REAL difference in opinion! @Frans: unthinkable. Indeed, unthinkable that european politicians display such a lust for war and fighting instead of diplomacy. Haven we forgotten on which fundament the EU was built after WOII? "The destiny of Europe will de decided on the battlefield"??!!. Unthinkable that EU "leaders" are talking this talk!. Unthinkable that these words come out of the mouth of such a high ranking politician. Are we going to go to War or are we going to talk and sort it out diplomatically? We, the west has blown up the peace negatiations between the Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul. The Ukriane has a law that forbids any negotiations with Russia. In international conferences whenever the Russians speak, the westerners walk away. Unthinkable! Putin makes clear almost every week that he is willing to negotiate but we in the west do not want to talk with Putin. Unthinkable! What has become of the the EU? Wasnt the EU built on co-operation and dialogue instead of killing eachother? And now our destiny will be decided on the battlefield? In a proxy war between Russia and the USA, that could easily evolve into a real war between the two nuclear powers? What has happened? The unthinkable has happened namely that we in the West have become the agressors! Perhaps the EU "leaders" and also de Balie could inform themselves properly and act responsably to prevent war and promote co-operation and dialogue!
