Yes, I'm from Europe (Netherlands). And yes, I do brlieve the Ten-T network will be finished by 2050. Furthermore, I believe the EU will expand to cover virtually the entire continent as if it were one nation. In fact, I think in lots of ways it will function as one nation. With English as the main language and with a central, federal government in Brussels but at the same time preserving each state's own heritage, culture and language. There are many issues that need to be dealt with on a Europe-wide scale, like a EU armed forces, EU federal police and EU transportation network. But also traffic rules and equal rights, privileges and duties for all 748 million Europeans. Europe will be a global superpower once we can achieve all of the above.

@@EUR24 Yes, it had in a way. Germany had a Parliament for 1000 years. The Holy Roman Empire Reichstag was probably the longest "democratic" running institution in World history. Show me another state that had an Assembly of more than 1000 member states that meet continuously for a millennium. It wasn't democratic by modern standards, but Germany had a Parliament and Emperor was an elected office, and not a dynastic thing like in almost every other empire in the world. Free cities elected representatives and the representatives from all cities meet at least once a year. Hanseatic league councils were elected and were powerful enough to force emperors to change politics. One could argue that Germany had the longest history of democratic traditions in the world.

Very interesting project but what seems to be bugging me is wether the national infrastructures that already exist are being modernized and expanedd or wether they're bulding completely new infrastrcutures. Furthermore the environmental aspect is something to look after as the EU needs a better transportation connection within its borders but it also has clear environmental goals.

Yeah the original infrastructure is upgraded if possible. Check stations Berlin, Stuttgart, and in future Hamburg and Frankfurt. But lots of the german network is shit that needs dedicated new infrastructure for high-speed like france has already. Google diagram. French trains on average and German trains. The french cover alot more distance per hour.

@melaniedrogr95110 ай бұрын
large part is upgrading existing network, or making links that shorten travel times (think double tracked tunnels trough mountains instead of long, single tracked and curved rails across the mountains). But one of the main upgrades is forcing the same train security systems on all european main raillines. Because currently every state has developed its own system (or multiple ones) and it gets very expensive very quickly to install multiple systems on the same trains (as they all require different hardware, and this is one of the main obstacles for international rail (and freight by train is so much more enviromentally friendly than by truck)).

This is not a gigaproject, it is just an overarching larger plan to line up the national projects to form something that has wider scope beyond national views. The EU does not plan or build these projects, but it gives financial support to projects that align with the overarching goals of connecting Europe and its people in multiple ways. The key to all of that is that each project has local, national and international benefits, so it gets support from three different levels. The local support is crucial. This prevents that some guy somewhere in Brussels makes a plan that might be beneficial for overarching goals but would hurt people on local level or burden them with costs that do not produce any benefit for the people who must foot the bill with their taxes. So for each project the locals need to foot a part of the bill and if they don't the project will not go forward. This model sets incentives but keeps locals in responsibility. And one important part of it is that the project needs to be net positive. It means the money spend needs to create more economy, more income than the cost of building and maintaining the project. So no projects that are build just to make some politician or a political party look good.
@НиколайКейдо5 ай бұрын
This project is incredibly expensive and the final cost will be much more higher than expected at the beginning. But it is possible to decrease costs with increasing a speed of the project if we take into an account China's experience. China successfully decrease costs of their infrastructure project by unification technological process. Europe has to follow this way. This is a crucial issue. Repeated work costs less than a single ones. The same applies to the trams in cities. The first renovated or built from the scratch tram line in a city usually costs a fortune. But the second and following are much less expensive. This is a result of using the same equipment by the well experienced teams that do the work faster and cheaper. Also, the process must not take long brakes that increase costs. We can also take into an account an experience of building Moscow metro - one of the largest metro network in the world that is continuously being built with opening a number of station per year. This definitely works like an assembly line and the process is cheap and speedy.

I will give you a historic perspective and fact. Ancient Greek City states where actually more "distant" in values and way of life between them than today's nations of Europe. They just had a "common area" with similar values in some, but not all, matters and similar language in some extend. The rest is history. Also the most important fact: Europe was in its prime only when it was united. From Alexander The Great, to Rome, to Byzantium Empire. It declined whenever the it was in pieces of nation-level. History as a science has a bad name. It "emits" and aura of old in its name. History should ne called "Learning from others success & mistakes". Regarding local culture and languages, in our time when communication is instant, diversification is power. Nothing blocks you from using your local language, neither hinders you. The nations of Europe are its power. Cause at the end of the day, as history taught us many times over, no1 power of a nation is it values and no2 is the wealth. Another strong point of Europe vs other federal states, is that at its core, it has financial rules that forces ALL nation-states of EU to achieve minimum targets. Yes there will be the big financial centers, but the smaller centers will also be at least efficient, if not strong too.

Megapoles ? Talinn, Riga or Vilnius ? They're capitals but not megapoles. The thing is that larger cities are much much much more efficient and easier to ecologically transition than rural areas or small towns. When you build high-speed lines between large cities, or metro, tram, RER or S-Bahn lines in a large city, you can move millions every day. Whereas regional trains have a much more limited impact. Sure, the regional trains in France should be improved, but what has more impact on the ecological transition is to stop the development of single family housing and push for densification.
