I've been to Moldova several times myself and Transnistria as well, you can see some actual recent footage I took in those countries on my channel. I would say opinions on Moldova are a little exaggerated, when you go there yourself you can see a lot of teenagers that are well dressed, people go out, restaurants are always full at any time of the day. Of course you have poverty but it's less than it used to be.

After reading multiple comments from fellow Moldovans, I want to add something to this excellent video. One huge aspect that could have been covered a little more in the video is the fact that a very large portion of children in Moldova grow up with only 1 or NO parents. They do have parents, that love them, but to provide for their children, they go to work in Europe, Russia, Israel in order to make money and send most of it back home (that's why you might see kids in villages with iphones). You can ask any Moldovan under 25 years old and 90% of them will tell you that at least 1 of their parents at least once went to work in another country to support them. What happens is either the mother or father have to go find work in another country because the local salaries are just too low to support a family, even with both parents working (mind you, this mostly applies to rural Moldova). In the case that both parents have to leave, the children usually live with grandparents. The issue becomes more apparent later in the following ways. Children lose emotional connection with their parent(s) and it really affects a child's psyche from an early age. The parent that stays back home, for various reasons, may start being disloyal to their husband/wife which leads to even more problems (rare obviously but not impossible). Depression leads to alcohol abuse. Etc. And to add to that, the type of work that these poor parents usually do is manual construction labour for men, and either house cleaning or elderly care for women.

@@sarantis1995 The scars that were left by the communist regime on the population are still present and will have a pretty strong effect for at least another 10-15 years. Moldova wants to join the EU and that might be helpful for the country, specifically from an economic/trade perspective. But there's also the fact that thousands of people are leaving Moldova every day to move to other places, and a lot of them are educated people that see better opportunities elsewhere. Moldova is bleeding talent. For Moldova to get back on track, I think the government will need to invest heavily into education and create a entrepreneurial culture for young people to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and keep people in the country, or there will be some sort of wave where hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who left will come back and invest in the country. Or both. Thing is, both things are already happening on a small scale. But the bottleneck is the Judicial System which is corrupt and unstable.

I was born and still live in Moldova. I went to school and university in Moldova, and work (private sector) also here. After first or second wage (around ten years ago) - I don't remember being broke, or in debt. But I know that there are people with smaller salaries, but from my point of view - there is a continuous improvement of conditions. When I started school - in the winter it was pretty cold, and we were in classes in outerwear, when I finished school - we had heating, most of the windows if not all were replaced, desks and chairs were replaced, roof was replaced, we even had new informatics laboratory with decent PCs. Now, that school is even better, with bathrooms inside, with equipment to learn languages, courses on robotics and so on. And this is a public school in a village, not some fancy private school in the city. When I went to university - there were only few repaired classrooms, most of them were last repaired during soviet era, it was also stupid cold in the winter, some desks were so old, that they were full of inscriptions, also some as old as soviet union, sockets were missing or broken, floors were also so old that only in the corners were some traces of paint. When I finished university - already most of the classrooms were renovated, corridors were also renovated, now there are places to sit, to charge laptop, everything is lit up and there are no hanging wires... And now is even better. Public transportation - when I fist time visited capital - there were only soviet era trolleys and busses, and also a lot of micro buses (which only later I learnt that they were not even supposed to transport passengers). Now soviet era trolleybus is seldom, albeit present, but most of them are modern, with heating pumps and some even have air conditioning. And they are more comfortable, with floor level approximately the same as the pavement, while in the old ones - you had to climb few stairs, which is ok for healthy people, but if you have mobility issues or have a baby carrier - it was hard. And I could leave Moldova, I visited several countries, but I still believe in my country

Wow! It's great to read this. I'm glad that there's progress and investment in education. I hope corruption will also decrease, and the private sector can truly thrive as a result. It's important to find a way to keep talented, educated young people from leaving the country, but with a corrupt government, it's not going to be easy. I'm Hungarian, and in our country, in my opinion, the quality of education and corruption are the biggest problems. However, unlike you, we have seen gradual deterioration rather than progress in these areas in recent times...

I'm also from Moldova and I just asked my mom about the Mingir cases of selling kidneys . Said she remembers it since it was the village next to where she grew up and there were young adults, like 20 year olds who did that as a way to get money, that was happening at the beginning of 2000. I also remember the shock everybody went through when the billion just disappeared, l'm somehow surprised a lot of people just got over it and the man who did that, even now has its string over our political situation. Well, the Soviets left us, Eastern Europeans, without anything. But at least they are gone. Now, after they left, we needed to figure out what to do next, some countries did better, some did worse. For example, my country, Czechia, revived from this relatively fast, being now the richest country which was under the Soviet influence, but not directly under the Soviet Union. But you can still unfortunately see signs of communism here, and after revolution, we've had also some bad times, including the privatization in 1990's. Still not the best politics, but when I look at Slovakia, I'm glad that we have pro-democratic and pro-european government. Czechs also really hate Russians 😀 So don't know how is it in Moldova but we would kick the heck out of Russians. We still see the Russian influence in Moldova, unfortunately. Wishing your country only the best and looking forward to be our ally in European Union, when the corruption and all the stuff is solved.

I'm a history student at the University of Bucharest. I have a few classmates who are Moldovan Monarchists. I feel like in the long-term, this educated class will come to lead the country, and lead it back into prosperity in Romania's arms. Moldova's current president is a declared unionist and last month the Romanian State acquired control over the entirety of Moldova's gas system, with an acquiring of the electrical grid happening next year. Reunion is definitely happening within the next 10 years, and that's an unstoppable fact.

I left my country when i was only 15 years old for a better life after not seeing my mom home since i finished kindergarten (only 6 years old) and this is the reality that many of young moldovian kids/teenagers have to go through nowdays. Now i'm about to be 18 and germany completely changed my life, i already learned the language and i'm thinking about my future here for the comming 10s of years but not for a single day i stop thinking about my beautiful country moldova and i always follow how everything is evolving there. It's true that nowhere it's like home. Even if where i live now life is better and the culture, toghether with the values and people of germany are not that different i still want to move back there one day and contribute to the development of my beloved homeland

He intentionally omitted the last 5 years, during which the country surpassed Ukraine's, Georgia's, Armenia's and even Russia's GDP per capita. Basically, right from the title of the video you get a big, blatant lie, since Moldova is actually not the poorest economy on the European continent. Far from the truth. Why not make a video on those other countries? But with such a detailed video, it is obvious the author is aware Moldova isn't the poorest economy. 95% of the video's content is basically Moldova's history until the present day. But you don't get clicks and views by titling the video "Moldova's history". You have to omit Moldova's economic progress in the last 5 years, its EU accession progress, etc, and then regurgitate the lazy belief that baldandbankrupt established in his video: Moldova is the poorest in Europe. In short: he did it for the clicks. He doesn't care about Moldova's progress. If he mentions that, then there's no video at all and he cannot title the video like he did. As a young moldovan who left the country with its family to pursue a better life, I really appreciate this video as it put into perspective the life I lived as a child, when I didn't understand why we were so poor in comparison to others. It's really sad to see the country you were born in be toyed with and manipulated to suit the interests of others throughout all its history. I am from Moldova and I can confirm this info is quite accurate. Like someone who used to closely follow the politics in Moldova (roughly til mid-end 2021), I can tell you the reasons are complex and intermingled, but the baseline is the redneck and corrupt elite which will not allow Moldova heading anywhere not EU and NATO, nor Russia. Both pro-EU and pro-Russia parties only claim they are “pro” but in fact most of the elites sponsoring those would rather fight a war for Moldova remaining totally inert so they can do whatever they please in realm that belongs to them and them only. Fun fact: many Russian economic entities know about that and endorse that because they got their own economic interest that doesn’t always coincide with Russia’s strategic interest.

In terms of accumulation of capital, Moldova is poor. However, in terms of standards of living at micro level, you’ll find out that Moldovans are not that poor as many portrait. Most of Moldovans own their homes, cost of living is lower and taxes are the lowest in Europe. Chișinău is suffocating from road traffic full of luxuries German cars. What’s the point from your avg EU salary of 40000€/year when half of it are taxes and you end up with 1500€ net per month. From these 1500€ half goes towards paying rent and utilities.

Regarding Voronin - Putin failed deal to "solve transdiniestrian issue" - the protests were not in vacuum, and even if Voronin became pretty unpopular in the following years - he is still praised to refusal to sign that deal with Putin. Because what that plan supposed - was a kind of federalization of this tiny country, with transdniestrians getting "Veto" right, gagauz also, and it would be a very "fair" split of power, one third - to around 300k people on the left bank of Dniester, one third - to around 100k of gagauz, and one third to remaining cca 2mln citizens... and both transdniestria and gagauzia being to this day very loyal to kremlin, that plan to "settle down the conflict" would mean "give up the *whole* country to direct russian control"

I've been to Moldova🇲🇩 quite a few times (bcz I live in Romania at 20 km from the border) and it's absolutely beautiful. I don't understand why so many westerners judge Moldova🇲🇩 bcz it's poor etc. Just go to Chișinău to see how much greenery is there, how teen-agers are dressed, how McDonald's is full of people, how even some of them have pretty expensive phones, like iPhone 12. (Before I entered first time in Moldova I thought that everyone had very cheap Xiaomi and Samsung phones). Yea, yea, Transnistria, we all know it, we know that they broke Moldova 🇲🇩economy and other things, but just appreciate the country because they supported so many problems. I actually live in Moldova and it's nowhere near as bad as this video puts it, our salaries are pretty good even for public workers they have at least 600 euros as salary and there are workers that work for thr state and have even 2500 euros as salaries, we have a highly advanced IT industry, and we make a lot of money through vamal taxes, we have a lot of education projects and our schools are some of the best in Europe and the universities from Chișinău(our capital city) have a large number of foreign students for our reliable and trustworthy education, I live in a 30 minute drive from Chișinău and I have travelled through most of Moldova and I can confidently say that our country is rapidly developing

Just a quick correction ontheliteracyand Romanian investment in Moldova. Post-unification, the Romanian state built a lot of schools in Moldova. Economically, even Romania had to do a lot of developing and building, a lot of Romania, especially parts of the old kingdom were underdeveloped and rather agrarian.

There was a guy from Moldova in my degree course, his ancestors on his mother's and father's side were German and so they had the simplified option of immigrating to Germany after the collapse of the USSR. They did so because the entire state collapsed and they no longer had any prospects. He showed us pictures of Moldova and told us about the beauty of the country, but also how the family was starving and freezing, and how the grandfather died of simple bronchitis because the health system had collapsed and they couldn't find any antibiotics, let alone pay for them. We studied together 10 years ago, when the situation in Moldova was of course much better and his parents lived there again for several months a year as pensioners, I would love to visit the country after getting to know so many beautiful things about the country and its people! It is a pity that the Transnistrian conflict, among other things, continues to paralyze the economy.

As a young Moldovan 🇲🇩 I can say that the summary about Bessarabia’s history was excellent. Now about the situation in my country - After gaining independence we have been plagued by corruption, incompetent politicians and weak rule of law. Another problem is also that many people have a socialist mindset developed during the Soviet times - wanting the government to do everything and everyone to be economically (almost) equal. It is also important to note that the Soviets purposefully took the Danube and Black Sea access from Moldova (and gave it to Ukraine) which makes us somewhat geopolitically isolated. But currently we have a pro-Western government and we are moving towards the EU, 🇪🇺 so hopefully the economy will improve in the future. I personally would prefer re-uniting with Romania 🇷🇴 (as Romania is much more developed than us), but many people are still brainwashed by Soviet propaganda into believing that we are a separate ethnic group. Still Moldova is a nice country. It is worth visiting if you want to enjoy high quality (and cheap) wine and food. The country (and especially Chisinau - the capital city) looks in a much better shape now than 10 years ago. If we work smart, we can definitely become a decently prosperous country in the future! Btw, thank you for choosing video footages with nice places (unlike some other channels which purposefully show the worst parts of Moldova)

The Soviets really messed up this region. Follow geography. Moldova should be the region between the two rivers, all the way to the Black Sea south of Odessa, with Transnistria being Ukraine. But they really wanted the republics destabilized, and make it as hard to break up as possible. And now, Moldova might as well unify with Romania. It's basically the same country and culture.

The Soviets didn't expect their Union to fall. Transnistria was given to Moldovan SSR because the Romanians there actually had an ASSR before Bessarabia was taken by USSR. It's just that over time the demographics changed but not the borders, as there was little incentive to do so, since, as I said, they didn't expect their own collapse. I think Budjak was given to Ukraine SSR as some sort of compensation, the area is quite diverse ethnically - there are Bulgars living between today's Moldova and Izmail for instance. While for Transnistria, Romanians settled right on the bank of the river. But if Budjak had been part of Moldova today, it would have suffered the same issues as Transnistria: a declaration of Autonomy, Independence, war in the 90s and a Russian base there.

Wow this video is one of the best ones I've ever watched regarding a foreign county's history, economy, politics and prospects overview. As a greek, who's interested in all those, i had a rough idea but the amount of comprehensible yet detailed information in this video really makes the difference now, making me see Moldova in new eyes. And for what it matters, the video lives up to its title. I knew it was a poor country devasted by geopolitical tragedies and surging in corruption but I didn't imagine all the aspects mentioned here. And this from a Greek means a lot xD I wish the best to the genuine Moldovans who have suffered through all these unfortunate series of events and above all to those who wish and are willing to work to advance their country and the quality of life for the generations to come. TLDR: Moldova has been a Russian / Soviet colony since 1812, with a brief break between 1918 - 1940 and 1941-1944. It was exploited by the communists as a colony and sucked dry of everything they could extract from it. After the fall of the USSR, in 1991, they tried to dismember it (Transnistrian war of 1992) and then the "country" was left prey to the former communist party members, now turned business men. The results are not hard to see.

The video speaks the truth but kind of avoids the "good parts." I was born in 2001, and I was fortunate enough to enjoy a wonderful childhood. I mean, my family was never rich or particularly wealthy, but people here somehow manage to get by and not refuse anything. Anyway, Moldova today should reestablish a good relationship with Transnistria while maintaining strong ties with both Romania and Russia. Yes, it sounds "crazy" to not choose, but I think in Moldova's modern history, no one has really tried to stand out. They've just played along with an imaginary and somewhat futuristic proposal for the EU or had an embarrassing relationship with Russia. Moldova should establish its own respect between the EU and Russia. Yes, it sounds silly, as Moldova has literally nothing valuable in its land (like no sea access, no resources, overall insufficient agricultural land, etc.). That's why Moldova should invest more and more in the third and fourth economical sectors. Sounds silly? Probably, but It might be an alternative and a quite creative way to create new economical resources from nothing. Why not trying?

The Moldovan population's minds have been poisoned for decades. Besides the similarities, there is a resent of Romania that is very palpable. Every since independence, they waited for someone to save them. Either Russia or Romania/Europe. You're not weird, and looking at a map and saying a country just "looks" like it should belong to another country is a thing many people do. That's not to say that's not an invalid position to take. What decides the Moldovan borders are more or less arbitrary than the borders of Germany, or straight line borders, or any other border? Much better, without a doubt.The 30 years transition was really rough but his video is not that accurate. It's not covering the last several years since the power changed and we managed to finally elect someone worthy. For example, i do not know any person who sold their kidney, nor did i heard it on the news.

My country Argentina seems to be heading in the same direction. We are saved for now because there are poorer countries around us, but once pur government runs put of money to maintain infrastructure (they are barely investikg that now) and the brain drain and capital flight continue since it's impossible setting up a new business without being drowned in taxes or having to pay corrupt officials we may find outselves selling organs in a few decades as well

Te la tiro es castellano salamin. No te acordas cuando una empresa literalmente X (porque nadie jamas supo quien era) vino hace poco a hacer escaneo de retinas a cambio de 50 USD? Te acordas las colas que se armaron? El cheto promedio de Recoleta, Neuquen capital, Santa fe o Córdoba nunca van a vender sus organos. Ellos ya estan hechos y van a ver Taylor Swfit o a boquita. O de ultima rifan la play como el pibito que salió en la tele y se fue a ver a boquita (estas hablando hoy una play 5 vale un millón de pesos nueva, suficiente para flor de viaje a Brasil). Los que van a terminar vendiendo organos acá son los del norte, cada vez más pobres pero que pese a todo siguen votando peroncho. México esta bastante estable y tiene Gran Premio de F1 y organiza un mundial y tiene un mercado de organos tremendo. No hace falta que toda tu población sea pobre, en Moldavia tampoco lo son todos. Solo hace falta dejar a un porcentaje suficientemente desesperado y sin recursos para que te armes un lindo mercado de esto. Y encima el candidato no peronista del ballotage ya habla de regularizar el mercado de organos. En 20 añitos estamos como en el video acordate, solo que vos y yo probablemente jamas nos enteremos xq tenemos la educación suficiente para andar viendo videos en inglés de crisis económicas en Europa del Este. Y por cierto yo renuncie a los subsidios de luz y gas y pago mis impuestos como monotributista. Jamas pago en efectivo x descuentos xq me manejo x billeteras virtuales y pido factura de todo lo que pago (culpa de mi novia abogada mas que nada). Asi que si te metes en la bolsa de chorritos y evasores negreadores metete a vos y no a todos. Si todo el mundo fuera tan chorro como el político promedio hace décadas que seriamos Zimbabwe.
