The local politics notwithstanding (all that Orange Order nonsense makes my skin crawl), it's lovely to see you take an interest in such clubs and the stories surrounding them. With that spirit in mind, should your travels ever take you to America, I cordially invite you to have a look at Union Omaha of USL League One. Just yesterday, we completed a double - Players' Shield Champions (season points winners) and the USL1 Cup. Union (AKA "The Owls" or "los Búhos") are, in their brief history, one of the most successful clubs in US lower division football (3 Shields and 2 Cups in five years of operation). We also made a quarterfinal US Open Cup run (our equivalent of the FA Cup) in 2021. That year, we defeated two MLS clubs on the road, as well as three Championship sides, two away. To this point, there is no formal promotion and relegation in the American pyramid, which explains our continued presence in a league which we dominate. Clubs do go up and down, but it's generally financial solvency that dictates their places in the pyramid, rather than performance on the pitch alone. There are plans within the greater USL structure to implement a more traditional promotion/relegation format within its pyramid, independent of MLS. Our ownership group is taking a crawl-walk-run approach.... create a winning culture, cultivate passion and support, build strong finances. We are building a brand new stadium (to date, we've been playing home matches in a baseball park - don't get me started). Upon completion, we will petition for promotion to the Championship. I will turn 54 years old this week, and have been a passionate fan of the world game since I was a young boy, at which time I adopted Celtic as my club. I waited a long time for football (I use the same word for both ⚽ and 🏈) to take root here. At long last, it's happening. Before purists give me too much stick about our lack of promotion and relegation, I would simply say the following... The English FA has got similar rules governing club financial wherewithal and facilities as a condition for promotion, regardless of merit. Just recently, Luton Town was compelled to improve and expand their stadium in order to meet Premier League standards. Thus, their merit promotion was in fact conditional. If they had been unable to carry it off, the promotion (however briefly it lasted) would have been rescinded.
@Sportspenguin772 ай бұрын
