Fantastic commentary - sounds like someone finally hired a commentator that understands and actually cares about foil!

First time the Germans have been in a Mens team foil final in six years at euro Champs. And holy shit the hype. The home crowd was vocal enough but the commentators too. Well done Germany.

European Championships have so many strong teams. On one piste you have Germany beating Italy and on the other one France beating Russia. The commentators were just as excited and rooting for Germany as most of us were.
@christianalbertjahns25775 жыл бұрын
@@FencingInsider yeah, it's funny that most of us are rooting for unfavorite team rather than the favorite one just like USA vs HK back then in St. Petersburg

Joppich and Kleibrink have been really strong for many years. Sanita fenced very well and took great advantage of the home crowd's energy. Klein had big shoes to fill and faced the challenge right on! Good to see Germany working as a strong team.

On a deeper look, it seems like European teams (especially teams that don't win gold and silver) like Italy and Russia must work harder to secure more foundation (I don't know if this is a right word) for Olympic qualification. In Pan-American there is obviously USA number one in the world. In Asia HK and Korea is looking good, especially after they win silver and bronze, respectively, in St. Petersburg and in Asian champs they have pretty good result. Japan and China have very good in Asian champs, winning gold and silver respectively, but they don't threaten the European teams quite much as HK and Korea, unless their performance in upcoming World Championship is surprisingly stellar. It's a disadvantage for being one continent of majority of strong team. Should they fail to place themselves in top 4 seats (not in FIE ranking but in qualification for Olympic's calculation), they are quite in predicament. correction: I miscalculate points rewarded in Zonal Championship. So as my pseudo-calculation suggests, the eight teams qualified as current standings in no particular order are USA (unless they screw up pretty bad in Pan-Am), France, Japan, China (or Korea, my pseudo-calculation is quite fuzzy on that one), HK, Germany, Egypt (also unless they screw up pretty bad in African champs), and Pan-Am team (I don't know which one will have best probability to qualify). David Baker probably will cover much more accurate outlook on this after every Zonal Championship is over.

@@christianalbertjahns2577 he barely beats junior fencers like Tourette and Marini, pre sure he's getting good draws in D.E. Rounds and heavily relies on Garozzo in teams fam

@@cloudnein3483 in this competition? I believe Tourette is American and Marini didn't compete in this competition because of quota. In any case, barely winning is still winning. It's not like big win occurs very often. If we are talking about result, he's pretty good. This is some medals he got in this season. 1. Europian champs (gold) 2. GP Shanghai (gold) 3. CIP Paris (gold) 4. St. Petersburg (silver) 5. GP Anaheim (bronze) 6. GP Turin (bronze) 7. Prince Takamado Tokyo (bronze) edit: added GP prefix in GP competitions to differentiate GP and World Cup
@xDinomanx5 жыл бұрын
@@cloudnein3483 And let's just add the fact that Foconi was the freaking World Champion last year as well to that record too. So what if he lost to some of the juniors, the juniors that are currently fencing are very strong (and those young ones are training with the older more senior fencers too). Marini for example during the Anaheim comp also took out Garozzo, Le Pechoux and Massialas. So if you're gonna criticise him, don't forget that Marini also taken out other top fencers too. Upsets happen all the time. Anyone can win or lose, Foconi can have an off day just like any other fencer. Another example: Yuki Ota of Japan who bowed out in Rio early on after losing to Toldo of Brazil, a guy who statistically had no right to beat the 2015 world champion but it happened (and that guy made the 8 after eliminating Cheung Ka Long straight after too). So to say he's "washed up" is not fair at all.

The results @Christian Albert Jahns listed out, plus the current world champion title, speak for themselves. Being on the Italian national team is an impressive feat by itself. Much respect to Foconi, who's also a great person off the strip.
