A real refugee does not choose a country, they go to the nearest place that will help them out not try to pass through Southern and Eastern Europe to get to the wealthier northern states. Many trying to get into the UK refuse refugee status in France because they get more free stuff if they make it to the UK. It might be useful to point out that the Western Mediterranean route does not require crossing the straight of Gibraltar to enter Spain. For most migrants it makes more sense to do it through the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta and Malila where Spain and Morocco share a land border.
