Everything to get started with European Nightcrawler composting worms.

Spent coffee grounds actually have a pretty neutral ph. It’s a myth that they are acidic

I thought I was buying giant red wigglers from the bait shop but it looks like they are european night crawlers. They are still doing ok even though I have been treating them like rid wigglers. They are breeding. There are lots of babies. The box just said "red worms"

Thanks nice. There are sub surface bins as well which should stabilize the temps.

I was wondering how do you find success with the worm farm in Central Texas with the high heat. I am in Central Texas too and I am looking at starting one.

Inexpensive 3 in 1 PH soil tester. I am going to do an upcoming video comparing that tool to a professional lab analysis. We'll see if the tool is accurate....

Shouldn't peatmoss be avoided seeing as it's acidic and the soil needs to be neutral or slightly alkaline? Also from my research apparently despite the two being classified as separate genus's Canadian Nightcrawlers are just European Nightcrawlers that were imported by the settlers and there are no endemic earthworms to the USA. It seems like some areas in certain states (like Michigan) prohibit the use or ownership of Earthworms to prevent them from being introduced to the environment. It appears the science community is basically in agreement on this it's just recently corrected and the science community hasn't changed classifications yet (which the scientific field can be slow to correct known species info on). Confused to hear this yet hear so many sources attest to different aspects to both European Nightcrawlers and Canadian Nightcrawlers.

Yes Canadian Nightcrawlers are just European Nightcrawlers, we just love to slap the Canadian label on everything here. Maybe if they ever travel they can sew little Canadian flags on their backpacks. 😂 They're an introduced species in North America, confirming that. A lot of people add coco coir instead of peat moss, which aside from acidity is also sustainable. :)

I have been raising Red wigglers for three years. They are living in bussing trays, soil, leaves, shredded newspaper , shredded cardboard and coco coir, only about 3 inches deep. Do European night crawlers need a deeper environment? What is the optimum ph level for ENC?

Not sure I would use Black Kow - no need to start with compost. Coco Coir, Peat Moss, shredded cardboard and leaves, all moistened, are good choices.

I had about 5” in my bin...set them up just like RW....after 2 months...I had hardly any cocoons. A lady told me to increase moisture and put bedding to 2-3” and I started having a population explosion. She also told me to harvest castings more often because they tend to like fresh bedding more.
