21:04 never thought I’d get to hear my home state be said in a European accent lmao Mammoth Cave is insane, you don’t really get a good sense of just how giant it is until you get inside. I went on a tour in a couple of the different branches, and when they turn the lights off it’s completely pitch black, some of the purest darkness possible nowadays I also had a persistent cough in my childhood that went away when I first visited the caves so I’m convinced they’re at least a little bit magical lmfao

I remember that tour! Kentucky is spectacular in a lower-key sort of way (than the big parks out west) *Kentucky is just plain beautiful!* And, there is the historic link between the original 13 colonies and the first settlers who moved westward. Not to mention that it was a border state during the Civil war.

Don't sleep on Death Valley - when those wild desert flowers come in its amazing. Right now is a rare opportunity. So much rain that its flooded with a shallow lake that reflects the scenery - first time since 2003 and probably be another 20-50 years before it happens again.

I retired from working for the National Park Service. Though I was just an IT specialist, I still felt proud to have been a part of such a wonderful organization. Every now and then, I got to travel to some of the parks to help them with their computer systems. The National Park Service manages 428 individual units (parks, monuments, memorials, recreation areas, battlefields, etc.) covering more than 85 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US territories. Deleware is the only state that does not have a "National Park," but it does have some National Historic Parks and National Historic Trails, which are under the umbrella of the National Park Service. The Tetons received their name from French-Canadian trappers who accompanied the earliest British expeditions into this territory. As they approached the range from the west, they beheld three towering mountains upon which they bestowed the name of "Trois Tetons" ("Three Breasts").

A road trip idea I like for a foreign visitor is: fly into Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rent a vehicle, work a clockwise square-ish circuit going west to Arizona, turn North to Utah, turn East to Colorado, then south back to Albuquerque. You could hit the highlights in a week, or you could spend a month devoting quality time to all the sites and parks.

There is also that huge Crazy Horse* carving! It is being paid for entirely by voluntary donations * "Crazy Horse" was a Lakota/ Oglala (Sioux) Native American Chieftan who lived 1840--1877) He fought against European/ American settlers encroaching on the Native people's territory. "Crazy Horse" means "His horse is crazy" Native Americans have special nicknames -- I am not sure how the tribe decides these nicknames.

The Grand Canyon cannot be appreciated until you are there. I have been blessed to have visited multiple national parks, and all are beyond amazing. I have found that I had a different sense of awe at each one. The Grand Canyon was almost like a "religious experience" for me. Another thing to be aware of is you can visit many of the parks from other vacation destinations. For instance, I visited Bryce, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and the Mojavi Desert from Las Vegas. The same in Northern CA. You need to rent a car and take advantage of information online when planning your trip and also take advantage of some of the guided tours available within a few hours of your "home-base".

@@jeffhampton2767 What a wonderful trip you had. It is obvious that taking that trip is still very much alive inside you. I still feel how I was humbled by simply standing there. I took the risk, as I was 21 at the time and not yet married or with children and i took the plane ride into the canyon. I cannot even describe the thousands of times I literally was in awe of the magnificent and stunning views. The connection that I had there at that time made a lifelong impact on who I am. I remember my spiritual connection to Yosemete and how my time there helped heal a massive hurt inside my heart. I could go on. Like you, I am in the senior crowd as I graduated high school in 1969 😀. I was so blessed to have a career that I loved and with it, I got to travel all over the US, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. I am now homebound and disabled and have outlived my family. But, my life is still so very much alive within me including the Grand Canyon and, of course, my partner in crime, the amazing Katie the kitty. Thank you so much for sharing your comment. I felt it. He actually missed a few! There's Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also, Gateway Arch National Park in Saint Louis, MIssouri. He mentioned Glacier Bay NP in Alaska, but there's also Glacier NP in Montana, which is one of the most visited parks in the nation. Indiana Dunes National Park on the north shore of Indiana, New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia (America's newest park), Shenandoah National Park in Virginia - the video actually missed alot. Currently 63 National Parks in total, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to national parks, the National Park Service (government agency) is also responsible for a grand total of 420-plus units, including many dozens of National Monuments, National Historic Sites, National Lakeshores and Seashores, National Recreational Areas, Parkways, Trails and Preserves. Many of these are just as stunning - or more stunning - than the national parks themselves.

As beautiful as Alaska is, it is not an easy place to visit. It will take a lot more planning than visiting another state, and will be more demanding in various ways. If your goal is national parks, I would definitely say Utah should be your first choice. There are five parks, relatively close to each other, but also quite different, so you would be able to see quite a bit, even if you only spend 2 weeks there. My second choice would be California, with it's nine national parks, but I would definitely recommend not trying to visit all of them in one trip. If you stick to Southern and Central California, you could visit Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and then end your trip with Yosemite, or you could reverse the order and go from north to south. Again, you would want to spend at least 2 weeks doing this, but keep in mind that you could just as easily spend 2 weeks in a single park like Yosemite or Yellowstone.

@@davinasampson6557 Sadly, you can't do that now without a transfer. It's one of the routes railfan's are trying to get brought back. But for now all the routes west of the Mississippi are east-west except the Pacific Starlight on the west coast and the Texas Eagle from San Antonio to Chicago. So to go from Denver to Seattle you'd have to take the California Zephyr to San Francisco (Emeryville, across the Bay, actually) and then catch the Pacific Starlight to Seattle there. Both the Zephyr and the Starlight are, however, "beautiful trips". The Starlight used to be pretty plush, too with a bar car and free wine in 1st class but Amtrak has done away with most of the luxuries.

Have been to most of the states and many of the national parks. The California parks from Joshua tree to all the redwoods and sequoias are incredible. Oregon is really beautiful as is Washington. Yellowstone is in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho; all three of those states are wild and beautiful! Colorado is just south of Wyoming and above Arizona. The western United States has so much to offer with very few people. Towns are few and far between. I live in Idaho near the Sawtooth Mountains and not far from Craters of the Moon National Monument, a lava flow that is really fun to visit.

The climatic similarity between Spain (and Portugal) and southern/central California probably has more to do with ocean currents than actual latitude. In both the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans, the currents are clockwise and bring polar water farther south than it otherwise would be along the eastern coastlines of the water body. This tends to moderate temperatures and leads to the wet winter/dry summer patterns.

Utah and Colorado are nex to each other. Washington and Oregon are next to each other. Depending on how much time you have to visit and how big the state is that you want to visit, you can pick two or a few. I know that you want to see EVERYTHING! Most people do. But it's really best to pick an area and vacation there, visiting places in that area. When you can come back, pick another area to visit. Imagine having a week in Portugal, and the next week, you are in Bulgaria. You are going to miss a lot in between and be very stressed from all the travel. Believe me when I tell you that almost everywhere you go in the US has something worth stopping for.

If you start in the far south at the Salton Sea and move north through Death Valley, Josua Tree, Big Bear Lake, Sequoia National Park, Big Sur, the Paso Robles/central coast wine country, the Hetch-Hetchy and Yosemite region (the park is only a small part), the San Francisco Bay Area, the North Coast (SF to the Oregon border), the Napa/Sonoma/Mendocino wine country, Lake Tahoe, Clear Lake, Lassen Peak, Mt. Shasta (volcano similar to Mt Rainier) and so on, CA is probably the most diverse and beautiful state. A lot of these areas aren't "National Parks" but have other designations from "National Seashore" (Bay Area) to National Forest (Sequoia) to State Parks and so on, and some are just in private hands (but with conservation easements) or belong to non-profit land trusts so don't appear in videos like these. CA state law preserves most of the state's coastline from private ownership or development so even without being in a park it will stay pristine and open to the public forever. The bad press is just politics, mostly from rightish sources who hate the states leftish politics. It has no effect on its beauty.

Hey Andre, Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio barely received a mention in this video but I actually live IN the park and it is really spectacular. It does not have the grandeur of the parks out West but it is full of lush green forests and rivers and creeks and waterfalls, but the best part about it is that it weaves all throughout the suburbs of Cleveland. Cleveland within city limits is a dump but the suburbs are where the real economic activity is at and they are all beautiful, like the park. My point is that we all vote to be taxed heavily for this park. It is massive/sprawling and extremely interactive, by which I mean the people responsible for maintaining the park keep it perfect at all times and offer TONS of community activities throughout the park grounds. Everybody loves it and they travel 4-5 hours away just to spend a day in the park system. Indeed, the Metroparks recently won an award for the best maintained parks IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. The park system is enormous and filled with community engagement of all ages. Indeed the demographic here is young so people use it all the time.

Grand Teton National Park is named after the tallest mountain in the Teton Range, which is called Grand Teton. The name of the mountain is attributed to early 19th-century French-speaking trappers who called it les trois tétons (the three teats) The name was later anglicized and shortened to Tetons

Pinnacles and Redwood National Parks in California are the newest ones. Pinnacles has a large population of the endangered California condors, and the Yurok tribe in Redwood recently received 2 cohorts of condors from the captive breeding program. The Yurok are schedued to receive more condors this year to repopulate the condor to their ancestral homeland. I recommend watching and reacting to a video of how the California condor was brought back from the brink of extinction in the wild, thanks to the captive breeding program.

I live in Portland, Oregon and we are an hour from Mount Hood National Forest, an hour and a half from the Pacific Ocean and Haystack Rock, and several hours from Crater Lake. Going orth, two hours for m Mount Saint Helens. It's beautiful here, and Oregon has no sales tax. By the way l, Colorado and Utah are next to each other. I have been lucky enough to visit both states. In fact That have been to thirteen states by driving across the country. Not to be missed if you have the time. The Redwood National Forest is an hour south of Crater Lake. Well worth the drive.

Probably the best way to experience the Grand Canyon is to do the Rim to Rim hike, or if you wish, the Rim to Rim to Rim. It's about 18 miles one way. But in order to really get a sense of what all those rock formations look like, yoh need to see them from various elevations as you hike the trail. There's many videos on KZbin recording their hikes, just search for Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, and you should find them. They're very interesting to watch as it gives youna totally different sense of the "attraction" than if you just look at it from the touristy paths along the top of the rims. I'd love to see you react to one of these hiking videos.

true about the Grand Tetons. Teton means nipple in French. Named by French explorers. Visit Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico and you won't be disappointed by the high mountains, deserts and unique landscapes. Every state has natural beauty and numerous state parks that preserve that beauty.

Did I miss the Great Smoky Mountains National park? I did not see it on this video which is surprising because it is the most visited of all the national parks. It's located in the Appalachian Mountains between Tennessee & North Carolina. There are some great tourist towns near there including Gatlinburg Tennessee and Cherokee North Carolina where people like to stay who are visiting the park. It is to me just as stunningly beautiful as the much taller and more rugged peaks out west. There's diverse wildlife but the park is best known for its black bears. There are also a couple of places where you can ski during the winter, and some lifts or trams that you can ride up to the top of the mountains to get a beautiful view. We love to go to the Gatlinburg area and rent a cabin that overlooks the mountain range. When you go up in the park there are several observation points where you can look out and just see for hundreds of miles across two different states looking across the mountain tops It's beautiful especially when the fog and the clouds roll through there and then you see why the native name name the mountains as they did.

I agree. I live in NC. Our mountains are beautiful and is typically left out of these videos. Ive only seen 1 or 2 videos where they mention the Great Smoky Mountains. Ive only ever seen them mention Shenandoah Valley on the TV side and Linn Cove Viaduct in Grandfather Mtn, NC. Guess I'm just biased. 😊

Andre, does the word 'Acadia' sound familiar to you? It's the area of Canada where the Cajuns of Louisiana originated. In fact, 'Cajun' is a decades-long morphing of 'Acadian'. Visited Arches, Badlands, Biscayne, Black Canyon of the Gunnison (River), Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, Congaree, Cuyahoga next summer, Death Valley, Denali, Dry Tortugas (like the Overseas Hwy. to Key West, the blueness of the water is caused by how shallow it is), Everglades, Grand Canyon [I backpacked to Phantom Ranch at the bottom 3 times]), Grand Teton (yes, the story you've heard is correct--it means 'big breast' in French; the Voyageurs apparently hadn't seen a female in a looong time, and started envisioning anatomy in this range of mtns.), Great Sand Dunes, Haleakala, Hawaii Volcanoes, Isle Royale, Joshua Tree, (Alaska isn't outside of the US, it's just not in what they call the Lower 48; Hawaii calls that the Mainland), Mammoth Caves, Mesa Verde, Petrified Forest [and Painted Desert], not Redwood N.p., but Muir Woods at the north end of Golden Gate Bridge, Rocky Mtn., Saguaro, Sequoia, Shenandoah planned for '25), Voyageurs [the same French guys who named Grand Teton], Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion [rhymes with 'lion', and is named after the huge hill in Jerusalem, Israel], Great Smoky Mtns. in '25.

He left out some of my favorite parks. When he didn't show Glacier National Park in Montana, but introduced Glacier Bay in Alaska as Glacier, I pulled up an alphabetical list of parks and kept track. He left out Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands in New Mexico, where I used to live, Gateway Arch in St Louis and New River Gorge in W. Virginia.

Andre, it is great to hear you talk about how beautiful our parks are in America. I spent most of my adult life living in Minnesota. Northern Minnesota is one of the most beautiful places in the world if you like woods, water and nature. I lived on a lake where the water was crystal clear, and it was in the middle of chippewa national forest. Stunning. But winters can be very harsh.

Colorado - been there many, many times. Fly into Denver, get a rental vehicle, and drive a loop around the state . Take your time, but don't go in the winter unless you want to ski. Altitude sickness is a real thing there! My favorites are to go to Golden first, drive the Peak to Peak Highway to Rocky Mountain National Park, and drive across the main road to the west (if it's actually open - closes in the winter). The high mountains get snow from late August to May/June. And just go from there. Black Canyon of the Gunnison has boat tours at the bottom - with a 200+ stairway both directions. But really worth it!

Grand Tetons. Native American named. True. Don't know if they still are doing this but Europeans came to Death Valley in the highest temperatures. Usually July. Does not cool off at night. They would have their pictures taken with a thermometer in the 120s or higher. One German family never made it out. They got lost. It can be very dangerous if you don't know what your doing.
