Unfortunately, all the actresses passed away. The actress who played Rose (Betty White) died the most recently in 2021, a few weeks before her 100th birthday. The mother/daughter you liked were both from New York City in real life, so that is their accent. Another 2 great videos to check out with Sophia's (the "old lady") sarcastic humor is: "Sophia Petrillo: The OG Comeback Queen 👑 Golden Girls" AND "Sophia’s Best Insults Pt. 2 (Compilation) 🤣 The Golden Girls | TV Land"

She fought this disease for 6 yrs and passed away on 1989. During the time this was on, it brougt her much laughter & joy. Near the end, she was so weak, she could not hold head up. One of the best shows ever written on TV. All four of the women were incredible on this show. I highly recommend watching it with your wife. It is hilarious! They are not family, just women living in Miami except for Dorothy, the tall one, and Sophia the other lady. They are mother/daughter in the show. I legit think it might be the best show ever written. There were 7 seasons with 180 episodes from 1985 to 1992. They just don't make them like this anymore!

You should try and find a whole episode to watch. You'll get an idea of the characters as well as see the funny parts in the context of the entire episode. It was a very popular show. The two characters you like best are Dorothy (the tall lady) and her mother Sophia. The lady who likes relationships (Blanche) owns the home they are all living in. Blanche and Rose as well as Sophia are widows and Dorothy is divorced. They are all living together to share expenses.

It helps a lot with the comedy to know the personality of all the characters. Blanche was a 'southern belle' type that thought everything was defined by the men you could attract. Rose was a slow witted country girl from Wisconsin. Dorothy was the intellectual, a retired school teacher. The older lady was Dorothy's mother and had suffered a stroke so she had no filter and said whatever she was thinking. Blanche had rented out the rooms in her house to make ends meet.

It is one of the best written sit-coms ever. Their dialogs are just top notch. You don't see this kind of smart funny writing nowadays anymore in sit-coms. This video focuses mainly on Dorothy (played Bea Arthur, and yes -she was tall). But they were all equal in the show. Dorothy is not more nor less "Main character" as the other ladies. Watch the whole show. You will love it.

Betty White played Rose in this show and was the last surviving Golden Girl before passing away on December 31, 2021. Just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday. Even though all of the cast has passed on, this show still airs today and continues to bring lots of laughs to those like myself who grew up watching it in the 1980s and to newcomers like yourself. I loved this show growing up! I'll fill you in on this show, and nothing I say will spoil anything for you. This is all stuff you learn in the first few episodes. Blanche (I don't remember what job she worked; it's rarely mentioned) is a Southern belle who owns a home in Florida and after her husband passes away, she finds she can't afford to live there alone, so she gets roommates to help her pay the bills - and those are Rose (who does a variety of jobs over the years usually helping people or animals) and Dorothy (a school teacher). Dorothy's mom Sophia lives in an old folk's home called Shady Pines, and she often mentions other residents there or people she's known over the years (so a lot of times when you hear her say someone's name, it isn't anyone famous; it's someone she knows). Sophia, older than the others, visits the "girls" frequently. She's a grumpy old woman who has no filter and says what she thinks. Rose grew up in a small town called St. Olaf, and her comedic genius on this show is telling St. Olaf stories. You need to find a video of her telling her stories!!! :D Blanche loves men and is always on the prowl. Lol. Dorothy was married to Stan, who shows up a lot, and he left her for a younger woman but often says he still loves her. Dorothy is the smart one, Rose is a ditz (not very smart), Sophia is the grumpy one, and Blanche is the sex obsessed one. They are hilarious together! I love them so much and am glad you're getting to know them. It'd be better if you'd just watch an episode all the way through from beginning to end so you can get a feel for how the show worked, and then these clips will make more sense. :)

This has got to be a top 10 American sitcom still after like 35 years. It is hard to pick a favorite. A perfect foursome. Rose and Blanche you have to get to know a bit to understand their humor. Otherwise Rose doesn't make sense and Blanche feels outdated because they do shame her a lot, but it doesn't feel as cruel when you see the love. Dorothy and her mom, Sophia, have a sharp tongued that can be vicious, but it is just genuinely funny. Yesterday my cat was sleeping on me and ran away because I was watching Golden Girls and laughing too hard. a great sitcom to watch with family! ❤❤❤

Loved the Golden Girls and all of the characters were great. Blanche was the vain sexy Vamp who was always dating. Rose was the dimwit but with a good heart who came from the town of St. Olef where everyone was a dimwit and who she loved to tell stories about. Dorothy was intelligent and no-nonsense but didn't date much and the other s always cracked jokes about it and Sophia was Dorothy's mother who was this sharp tongued Italian grandmother who made up all these stories about a poor peasant girl from Sicily (according to her she was involved with Picasso and De Gaul). Blanche was from the South, Rose was from the Midwest and Dorothy & Sophia were from Brooklyn, NY.

The Golden Girls was an extremely popular comedy on TV in the 80s. All of the actresses are dead now. They were all extremely popular. The oldest lady, Sophia, was played by Estelle Getty, a great Broadway actress. Her character Sophia was an immigrant from Sicily and her daughter was Dorothy, the tallest lady, played by Bea Arthur. Dorothy had a New York accent. The lady who always flirted with men was played by Rue McLanahan with a strong Southern (Atlanta) accent. The last lady, Rose, was from Minnesota so she had the accent of the Scandinavian immigrants to that area. They were all widows who decided to share a house instead of living alone. The house was in Miami. You should watch more of their shows.

Fun fact: Estelle Getty, who played Dorothy’s 80 year old mother, was actually a year younger than her t.v. daughter, played by Bea Arthur. The show premiered back in 1985 and ran for 7 years until 1992. I started watching the re-runs when I was in my mid 40’s. I absolutely love the series. I now live with my 81 year old mother, and we laugh so much together. The best aspect of the series is that it’s creator, Suesan Harris, was not afraid to tackle very real problems, while much of the time infusing the show with the good and healthy dose of humor. One of my Mom and I’s favorite episodes is one in which Dorothy is so afraid of her Mom dying, that she becomes over-bearing to the point of suffocating her Mom, Sofia. Sofia speaks up that she can’t live in those conditions. It was a very relatable episode because my father had recently passed away, and my Mom had a medical emergency and was in a rehabilitation facility for 3 weeks after her hospitalization. I acted like Dorothy towards my mother. I didn’t realize that I was acting that way until we watched that episode together. Please react to the series while watching it with your wife. You will both enjoy the series so much.

The writing on that show was top notch. You are correct that the one lady named Blanche is the one going on about her love life, the tall one Dorothy is the main character and the short oldest lady is Dorothy's mother in the show. Rose is the airhead of the group and when she died people were acting like a President died. All of these characters were fairly prominent actors so putting them together was a great choice. Great cast plus the great writers really made it a winner. People still watch it to this day.

Nice to see your intro to this show. We have a handful of senior citizen ladies who decide to live together to save on expenses and to have friendships, and the result is so fun and sweet. The show had a seven season run starting in the fall of 1985. Very popular, and beloved by new generations today thanks to streaming and DVD discs and word of mouth. I was in my late teens when it began on NBC television. It was so fresh and unique. And sometimes the writers really had a blast with stories and dialogue. My favorite thing, the best recurring gag they had on Golden Girls, was all the silly Saint Olaf stories told by Rose. So hilarious. Hearing about her home town and the wacky citizens there is always a hoot--- very funny. The first episode (a "pilot" episode ... as they say in the business) introduced grumpy and sarcastic Dorothy Zbornak, the substitue school teacher, and her sharp tongued mom Sophia, who moved in with Blanche and Rose. Blanche owned the house and was seeking a rommmate or two after her husband George Devereaux had died. Plus, there was a gay male cook in the house, named Coco, in that pilot episode. The show dropped him by the second episode; he really didn't add much, and Sophia swiftly became the needed ingredient in this house of women. I should mention that Dorothy has an ex husband named Stan, the rest are widows. Stan visits now and then, although Dorothy is not exactly fond of the guy. It is a very highly regarded sitcom, one of the best ever here in The States. All four actresses have passed on since the series stopped airing. Betty White (the innocent and naive Rose Nylund from Saint Olaf, Minnesota) died most recently and was the last to go. She almost lived to be age 100! I should also mention that after Golden Girls ended, creator Susan Harris wanted to keep the crew and actors working, feeling bad that it all had to end, so she chose to make a spinoff sitcom entitled The Golden Palace (however, actress Beatrice Arthur was not interested in another sitcom run, so Dorothy was not included except for a guest spot one time). In this later show, the ladies are working at a Miami hotel. Golden Palace is cute but it's not nearly as good as GG had been. Okay, I have rambled on long enough today. Thank you for sharing your enjoyment of GG on KZbin.

This show is about 3 roommates and it was made in the 1980's. Blanche Devereaux (the one that has a lot to do with men) owns the house, Then she got two roommates, Dorothy Zbornak (she's the tall one, divorced from Stan, who also shows up sometimes on the show, is a substitute school teacher, smart but not very good with men, usually) & Rose Nylan (the bubble headed one from St. Olaf, Minnesota). Then shortly after, Dorothy's mother Sophia also moves in - she's the older, small one that's not worried about what she says - like at all!. Everybody loves Sophia!! Blanche (Rue McClanahan) is the man eater from the south who thinks she is still in her 40s and irresistable to everybody. And then there is the old small lady Sophia. Mother of Dorothy, a wise italian woman with a sharp tongue and often a pain in the a.. for her daughter. They moved togehter for money reasons. They were not friends before. In fact they didnt know each other. But they became more than room mates over time. They became a family. With all the good and bad things that happen among family.

Dorothy and her mother Sophia have the New York (east Coast accents), Rose has a mid-western accent, and Blanche has a southern accent.

Even today, this show is amazing. Every episode is just amazing. The sit-com is about 4 older single women (3 widows and 1 divorcee) living together in a house in Miami. At the time, no sit-com had ever done anything like this with older women (it was all young and beautiful girls) and the show touched on many topics that were controversial or uncommon at the time. It would cover homosexuality, women's health and sexuality, racism, etc. It's hilarious, raw, and heartwarming. All four girls are the main characters, each getting their own screen time in their own way. Dorothy (the tall lady) is the daughter of Sophia in the show. Otherwise, the rest are just friends. And yes, Sophia is my absolute favorite of the 4. She's so savage. xD

Hello, there. Yes, you should definitely do more Golden Girls reactions. I grew up watching these as a kid. The show got away with *a lot* in the eighties, and it was one of the few shows that dealt with the lives of older women. It also brought up many difficult topics of the time, and treated them with grace, sensitivity and humor.

One of the British men who watched these mentioned that what Dorothy was talking on as she covered the receiver was a telephone! They also pointed out that Dorothy gave the man a match, something that used to be used to light cigarettes! How quickly we change!

Blanche (youngest looking, Southern accent, self esteem dependent on men being attracted to her) is the owner of the house in Miami. She needed a housemate to help with expenses but ended up with 3. Dorothy (tallest, no nonsense, former school teacher ) and Sophia (or Ma, the elderly lady) are from New York. Sophia was born in Sicily and she sometimes mentions her relatives there. Rose is from Minnesota where a lot of settlers were Norwegian. She has a heart of gold but is naive. She tells long winded silly stories about her hometwon, St. Olaf, that try the patience of the other housemates.

All 4 were the stars! They were great, all national treasures. The show was on in the 80's and 90's-a time when many assumed life was over and your were waiting around to die at their ages. Dorothy( Bea Arthur was really tall) played the straight guy but with a wicked kick, divorced, always seemed mistreated but tough. Blanche(Rue McClanahan) played the slut/southern belle type, sexy, sultry and of course man crazy, Rose(Betty White) played the adorable, naive, bordering on idiot but both lovable and competitive one, and Sophia(Estelle Getty) played Dorothy's mother, independent, still quick witted and very sassy and a victim of a mild stroke so she'd say anything to anybody and could get away with it. They were all senior widowed or divorced ladies who were roommates living in Blanche's house in Miami Florida-a place many seniors across the country wind up due to the weather. They made a kind of family with each other and it was 7 years of funny. It was an ensemble of 4, all needed to make the funny magic work. Any one of them absent, and the formula for funny just wasn't the same. Together they were really funny and sort of the way we'd all like to end up at that time of life. They all had lives, loves, sex, and dealt with hurricanes, money, and hard times with on coming older age in a way we could all relate and laugh about. To a degree, they were all friends in real life, though Bea and Betty seemed to push each others buttons at times. They're all gone now. These ladies and their characters where loved by millions

The Golden Girls was on TV in the mid 80's. Bea Arthur (Dorothy) Rue McClanahan (Blanche), Betty White (Rose) and Estelle Getty (Sophja). Four women who lived together in Miami Florida. Blanche owned the home and the other three women rented a room from her. The only two who were related were Sophia and Dorothy, mom and daughter. All four women have passed away, Betty White being the oldest at 99 last December. They were a pioneer back in the day and were not afraid to have LGBQ characters, episodes about AIDS, artificial insemination All four women won academy awards for their roles.

Bear in mind that the actress who played Sophia was actually younger than the three other women in real life. The actress was Estelle Getty and they used makeup and a wig to make her look like an old woman. Ironically she was the first of them to pass away due to a debilitating illness.

The tall lady was Bea Arthur. The women on the show were pretty equal, so some might say there really wasn't just one star on the show, more of an ensemble cast. But some might also say Bea was the star because the short lady played her mother and I think it was her house they were all living in. Those 2 characters were the only ones who were family. The other 2 women were just friends and, since they were all retired, they decided to live together to save money. Sadly, they've all passed on now. Betty White, who played Rose, who was the naive one, lived the longest. She had been a regular on the Mary Tyler Moore show before joining this series. Bea (the tall one who played Dorothy) and the sex obsessed one (the character's name was Blanche) were both in a hit sitcom called Maude before Golden Girls; Bea played Maude and Rue Mclanahan (Blanch in this show) played her best friend and neighbor. Funny thing, on Mary Tyler Moore, Betty White played the sex obsessed Sue-Anne Nivens and Rue Mclanahan played the dumb one on Maude. They actually wanted Betty to play Blanche in this and be the sex-obsessed one again, but she said she'd rather play a different type.

The little short one (Sophia/"Ma") was Dorothy's mom who came to live with them after the nursing home she was in turned out to be problematic. Dorothy (the tall one... Bea Arthur's height was 5'10", so yeah, she was tall) would threaten her mom sometimes by saying they'd take her back to the nursing home ("Shady Pines, Ma"). Sophia's bluntness is thanks to her having a stroke before the show began, and the character is supposed to have absolutely no social filters. She says exactly what she thinks. Dorothy's sarcastic and blunt, but her mother just lacks filters, which is why she tends to be given some of the absolute zingers.

Very funny show. They are roomates. Dorothy is the tall one and her mother Sophia is the short one. Blanche is the one who thinks of herself as a sexy southern belle and Rose is the ditsy one from a podunk town called St. Olaf's. They certainly don't hold back on their criticisms of each other. Sophia, the mother, definitely had the funniest one-liners. She just doesn't have a filter and says what she wants. The actress who played her around the same age as the other ladies, but they did a fantastic job of making her look much older. Blanche owns the house in Miami, Florida and the other ladies are renting rooms from her.

Okay, the dynamic with the 4 ladies is Dorothy and the oldest lady there, Sophia, are mother and daughter. They are both very sassy and funny. lol. And Rose is the airhead (not very bright, but sweet), and Blanche is the one that likes men... a lot. But they are all good friends who just give each other a hard time. They make jokes, but they all love each other in the end. Good show from back in the day. And yes, there are a lot of previous episode 'callbacks' for their jokes, so helps to have watched all the episodes sometimes. 😂 And can I say, the accents are hard here, because this is a prime example of America's melting pot situation. The show takes place in Florida, which is known for being a state of people who come from everywhere else. So Dorothy and her mom are from New York City, Blanche is from Atlanta, Georgia, and Rose is from St. Olaf Minnesota.

Season 2 Episode 5, Dorothy's (the tall one) childhood friend comes to visit - she's a lesbian. They tackle the topic head on with grace and humor. It aired in 1986! The show was as progressive as it gets, addressing topics such as interracial marriage, gay marriage, artificial insemination, AIDS, homelessness, and ending one's own life. It ran from 1985-1992.
