Fun fact! This silent drill type performance was originally meant to be a "one time" special performance in 1928, but it was so overwhelmingly adored and loved it became a fixed routine.

The USA actually has 2 aerobatic flight demonstration squadrons. The Blue Angels are the more well-known of the two, and they are part of the Navy. But I grew up with my father in the Air Force - so the USAF aerobatics squadron, the Thunderbirds, were always my favorite. (I built models of their planes when I was a kid.)

This was probably as part of Fleet Week/Memorial Day celebrations. NYC is very pro-veteran. I went there to see a Giants game during the Christmas season (which is the best time to visit IMHO). I have watched the silent drill team performances multiple times and it just never grows old watching how well trained and in sync they are. This one was better than the one on the football field because you could hear all of the sounds of the rifles and footwork. Can't imagine the arm/wrist strength needed to flip and catch these weapons. Especially when they catch them and as soon as they do, all movement stops. I watched to the end. The "USA" Blue Angels have longer videos showing even more amazing flights. Thank you. I respect all of those who have fallen.

They choose these men on the team because they are Elite. Not just at doing cool moves with an unloaded rifle... this is a team that no foreign platoon would want to get in a firefight with. These men are perfectly in sync. A platoon of soldiers who are in sync is the last platoon you would wanna fight.

Couple points incase no one mentioned the rifles they use M1Garand are WWII era rifles that are still in the armory for a few nations and they are a favorite among collectors and civilian Firearms enthusiasts in USA. They are very accurate weapons. They also are made with steel but plates and are parade versions.

Have seen them twice, in Washington DC and in the recruit depot in San Diego, both in the early -mid 90s, when I was also a Marine. Spoke to them after, turns out they do bear some scars from the bayonet, including a facial scar, so it is dangerous. When a mishap occurs, they are trained to continue with the performance, from a cover (hat, in civilian) being knocked off, to a bayonet cutting through your blouse (jacket) sleeve or side. They train in Arizona when off the performance season, and you can imagine it ranges from demanding to brutal

7:14 The demonstration weapons are rifles that were used in WWI and prior. They are no longer operable for the most part, but they are used, especially with the USMC where every Marine is a rifleman, to build a bond with the rifle. Through the Vietnam conflict, all US GIs were discharged with their weapons, and often, those are what they taught their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to shoot.
