@european-reacts I live in Pittsburgh. I was chef on the top of Mt Washington at a fine dining restaurant. The rivers are still pretty polluted. They are full of old cars and refrigerators. It's a nice city, though. There is a lot to do.

I've been to a lot of US cities and I can honestly say that Pittsburgh is one of the best. It's half the size of most cities yet packs in so much unique culture, sports, recreation and entertainment, and it's still much more affordable than most cities.

It's just 90 small towns smashed together most separated by bridges. That's what I love about living here the most... every neighborhood has its own feeling and it's own history behind it. Plus... like 10,000 restaurants. The street my shop is on, Murray Ave, has 5 pizza places, 2 Korean BBQ, 4 Chinese 3 Thai, and several sandwich restaurants within a few minutes walking distance. I moved here 22 years ago from Indiana, PA and I'm never ever leaving.

Yay for those visitors who posted the video; well done! A few additions, though: The Strip is usually much more lively than shown in the video. You usually have to fight your way through the streets if you're in a hurry. Yes, the enormous Primanti sandwich is definitely enough for 2 or 3 normal people. But so many other great eating places at the strip: Pamela's, where the crepes are as big as your plate and the place is hopping every morning. The Polish shop, where you can dine on every sort of Polish sausage there is! Wholey's Market (and takeout restaurant, where you can eat upstairs), where you can eat cheap on the freshest seafood for miles and be greeted by the owner! (The turnover of seafood is great, so everything is very fresh.) Other places are the Oyster House in Downtown Pittsburgh (est. 1870s-that's old for an American!), but you go there for a beer and the atmosphere, not for the (disappointing) oysters. The Grand Concourse at Station Square could give you an elegant lunch if you want to eat in luxury but still afford it! Or take a bus or Uber a mile or two east of Downtown and visit the Oakland or Squirrel Hill neighborhoods. Oakland has fantastic museums of art and natural history and the fun vibe of a busy university town, including University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, and Carlow University. The streets are lively with students and cheap food places. Squirrel Hill is a melting pot of cultures, where you see old white ladies, Chinese families, Black teenagers, Orthodox Jews, and lots of other nice folks tread the streets. Interesting merchandise shops and a million restaurants, including Middle Eastern, Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese, American, and Mexican, to choose from.

I'm not from Pennsylvania, but there was a time in my life when I made regular trips across the length of the state. It never failed to amaze me how much wilderness is to be found there. Before, I had thought of it as an eastern state, and therefore pretty urban, but between the eastern cities and a few others like Pittsburgh, etc., there are vast stretches of forests, mostly empty of people. Felt like a different world.
@jamy8575
@jamy8575 8 күн бұрын
NOT "empty of people"... The state of Pennsylvania has more roads connecting MORE small towns per square mile than any other state. a small town in ANY direction in under 5 miles. in the "wilderness" you described is 1000's of quite small rural towns.

I am from Somerset, PA, which is 1 hour's drive east of Pittsburgh. When the steel mills were in operation, PGH was dirty. They sky was gray. But the mills closed down, and other corporations came in and kept the city going, Those hills around the city are wonderful. The top of Mount Washington is full of either RICH or DEAD people. The poor lived on the lowest areas, especially downwind of the mills. I have been in Pittsburgh many times for the 4th of July, where they put off Fireworks on barges just off Point Park. The echo of the booms of the fireworks reverberating off the hills is tremendous. And one time I was driving thru Pittsburgh towards the airport when the fireworks were going, and it felt like I was beside a few rockets when I was crossing the bridge. They missed having KIELBASA with those pierogies!

Native of the Burgh. There are many East European families there. Polish, Russian, Check, and the rest, sometimes referred to as Hunkies. This is not a derogatory term, but they may have made it one in this day and age. There are Many orthodox churches with the onion tops and are beautiful. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh but moved away 15 years ago for work. When I was growing up, it was still an economically depressed city. It started its Renaissance just as I left. I haven't been back for more than two days since 2018 but each time I did go back o short trips, there was always something new which is a testament to its adaptation and growth. Going back for a week in October and can't wait.

Pittsburgh here, not originally from the city but I've lived in the area long enough I claim it as home now. It is so beautiful from almost every angle with all the different rivers and bridges creating interesting views. Each neighborhood around the downtown area also have their own feel and style too. Note on Primanti sandwich, yes they are freaking huge and you can get different types of meats on them. I usually don't eat anything else for the day if I'm going to one since it's pretty much all the calories needed for the day and very filling. Actually impressed that A&K were able to eat any pierogies after the sandwich. Also there's a soccer team in Pittsburgh, Andre. Minor league I think so not on TV but their stadium is near where the parking for the Incline is.

The best way to arrive in Pittsburgh is through the Fort Pitt Tunnel. You're in the hills, you go through a tunnel and suddenly Pittsburgh teleports right in front of you. Seriously there are videos of this. It's pretty amazing. Pittsburgh was the city that built all the other cities in America. It produced a tremendous amount of steel girders for all the buildings in the country. There's technically a 4th river in Pittsburgh. It feeds that fountain at Point State Park. I saw the best fireworks ever at PSP a few years ago. In 1979 Pittsburgh became the City of Champions. Their teams won the Super Bowl, the World Series, and the Stanley Cup (best football, baseball, and hockey teams). The Pittsburgh Steelers (football) is one of the winningest teams ever. They were the first to win 4 Super Bowl championships in 1980. The slogan was "One for the thumb in '81", meaning the players were trying to get a 5th Super Bowl champion ring. Many of them had 4 rings at the time (literal rings for your fingers) so they could wear a ring on each finger and get a 5th one to wear on their thumbs. But then they lost in 1981. Today the Steelers have won a total of 6 championships. New England is tied at 6. Promanti Bros is just OK. You gotta try it, but I think people rave too much. Pierogies are delicious when done right. I like them with butter and onions, and then have some sour cream. I never turn down pierogies.

Born in Pittsburgh & son went to University of Pittsburgh. The green hills surround the city & coming from the south you go through a tunnel in a large mountain/hill...when you emerge from the tunnel you exit on a panoramic view of the downtown cityscape & onto one of the bright yellow bridges across the river. In the 70s/80s the city buildings were all black from the coal smoke used in steel making, but have since been cleaned & it's a gorgeous city.

One of the most remarkable things about the city is the transition it made from a steel industry to the technical and medical powerhouse it is today. Pittsburgh used to be absolutely filthy with all the soot and pollution from the mills. Even the rivers were toxic. After an insane revitalization effort, there are tons of green spaces and you can actually use the river for recreation again.

This was a great little snapshot, but we could go to football, baseballs, and/or hockey games, the national aviary (bird zoo), the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, any one of our amazing museusms, including Andy Warhol, Phipps Conservatory, and so so many more things. If you ever find yourself here, I'd be more than happy to be a proud tour guide 😊

From central Pennsylvania, Hershey area. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state and Pittsburgh is awesome!! One of my favorites as well. Many travelers seem to overlook the northeastern US and they are missing out. The Appalachian mountains, Allegheny National Forest, Pocono mountains. So much to mention. New England States and Cities are spectacular! I also highly recommend Presque Isle in Erie Pennsylvania on Lake Erie. Philadelphia is nice but Pittsburgh is the most beautiful.

Pa girl here. We have so much to offer. I live South Central Harrisburg area. I've only drove through Pittsburgh. But in the East/Central PA you have Hershey (yes, it's where the chocolate comes from) Lancaster with all the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch speakers live, Philly with its history, food, and science centers. Gettysburg the turning point of the civil war. Come over July 1-3 and see the reenactments! I just want to warn you to watch the heat and humidity. It can get bad mid summer here. They also have a ton of walking ghost tours and great restaurants. I reccomend the Dobbin house for lunch. Kilwins for ice cream. Lastly, inner harbor Baltimore Md is a 90 minute dr from Harrisburg. There's a great aquarium, a revolutionary era ship to tour, fort McHenry where the war of 1812 helped write our National Athem. Edgar Allen Poe, the macabre poet is buried here. And it's just a jump from there to Washington DC. Never a boring day. Tons of free and expensive things to do. Science museums, IMAX movies, at Hersheypark you can make your own candy bar. It's the most expensive candy bar ever ($29.95 + 6% tax!!!) But they're fun and yummy to do at least once. The food at Hersheypark sucks though and is outrageous! Better to eat outside the park. I'd love to be your you'r guide if you ever make it across the pond!

The confluence of the rivers was an important military stronghold for the French, British, and finally the Americans. It was originally built by the French during the French and Indian war (1754) and was called was Fort Duquesne. The British defeated the French and renamed it Fort Pitt. After the war, it was sold to colonists and became a headquarters during the American revolution (1776). Pittsburgh has some amazing history and was vital to the birth and growth of our country.

I ended up in the Pittsburgh area due to work about 12 years ago. Having lived in 9 other states, I can tell you that Pittsburgh is a very underrated place. I am thankful for that because I moved from Charleston, SC, which got ruined by becoming popular.

You're right on the money. Nothing ruins a place quicker than over-population. Apparently, that is happening to Ashville, NC and Austin, TX. Hope it doesn't happen to Pittsburgh.

I used to work up on Mount Washington in the Trimont building which was across the street from the incline. The view never got old, especially in the fall when the leaves change color. Winter was pretty cold up there though!

They barely touched the surface! There's several colleges and universities here, the Carnegie Library, the TV studio where Misterogers was shot (I think they still have his props and sets), Kennywood Park, the Carnegie Science Center, Rivers Casino (which just opened about a dozen years ago), we USED to have the Civic Arena (the jewel of the city) but that was torn down a few years ago to build a parking lot!! The Bridge To Nowhere, which now goes somewhere after about 25 years of just stopping dead on the N. Shore. The factory where they make Clark candy bars, several locations where a number of Hollywood movies were shot, the two stadiums, the Gateway Clipper ships and, the best pizza in the world is right here at Vincent's! Pizza Park! There's Phipp's Conservatory, a huge hot house with loads of flowers from around the world, a pretty large Zoo and an Aviary loaded with all kinds of birds.

Andre. i grew up in Pittsburgh and I highly recommend it for a visit. One of the nicest things about the city is its neighborhoods. So many were founded by Eastern European immigrants and they still hold on to a lot of their culture today. The food, the churches, the heritage of each place is different, but they all make up one Pittsburgh. Just walking around some parts of the city can take you from German to Armenian, to Polish and then Italian neighborhoods. Don't forget...the food is amazing too!

If you ride the Duquesne Incline, at the upper station there are (or at least used to be) pictures of Pittsburgh from back in the 30s or 40s. In those pictures is the city with a dark sky, the streetlights are on, car headlights are on, but in one picture it's 3:30 pm and another it's 9:00 am. That's how much pollution there was in the air back then. My dad remembered people walking around town with dust masks on to keep from breathing the bad air. They cleaned it up substantially sometime around the 50s. Now when you see it, it's really nice and clean and looks much, much better. It also has more bridges than any other city.

..i'm a yinzer. in the 70's, this city suffered a lot of losses. thousands and thousands relocated for better opportunities. i was one of them. Moved back a few years later, and will only think of leaving again when the old bones say enjoy a warmer winter. If you haven't visited, you need to.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh. You asked if Pittsburgh is known for their football. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the winningest team in NFL history and have 6 Super Bowl Championships. Pittsburgh is a big sports city with iconic NFL, NHL and MLB teams.

Pittsburgh native now living in Albuquerque NM. I'm proud of my city. The video made me a bit homesick. A Primanti bros sandwich is worth the trip to Pittburgh. I'm missing my Babi's (Polish grandmother) home made PIEROGI. She made a mushroom and sour kraft one that was fantastic.

I am from Pennsylvania. My brother lives there and I grew up in Johnstown. Home of the floods. I now live in Williamsport home of the Little League World Series in north Central Pa and the whole state is beautiful. If you ever come to visit PA I would take at least two weeks to see Al the great areas. Besides Philly and Pittsburgh, there is Gettysburg, Hershey chocolate world. The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania near Wellsboro Pa and many other things. Go Steelers.

Oh hey, thats my city! I really love Pittsburgh, it's not the biggest or most impressive city but its got some very cool places, a unique history, great museums, good food, and really cool festivals and conventions. It didn't used to be that tree covered, back when the steel mills and other factories were running Pittsburgh had terrible air quality because the smog would get trapped in the valley. One of the ways environmentalists helped clean the air was to start planting trees all over the city and it's made a huge difference. Also the rivers were quite poluted by the industry but the Ohio watershed association works to clean and preserve it. They do very cool river cruise each year on the Gateway Clipper, which is an old paddle steamer.

My daughter and her husband/kids live in eastern Pennsylvania near Delaware. Her husband loves Pittsburg. It's one of his favorite cities. They have good MLB baseball (Pirates) and NFL football (Steelers) teams. It's a 4 1/2 hour drive and costs a lot due to toll roads. It's in far western Pennsylvania. It's on my bucket list of places to visit. We went to the Frank Lloyd Wright house Falling Water which is about 1 1/2 hours south. We just didn't have time to visit Pittsburg.

PA is by far one of the best states to live in. I live 26 miles east right outside of Pittsburgh and actually work downtown. There is no better city or location in the US. There are so many places to go and things to see around the entire Western Pennsylvania area. For those wanting food there are so many types, styles, etc. to consider. The diversity of its people are also incredible. We literally have it all. I was born and raised here and have been to many cities and states and there's still nowhere like PA and the City of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Steelers are also one of the most famous NFL teams of all time.

The view is better at the West End Overlook. I lived right by it in Elliot (a tiny municipality in the Pittsburgh area). Mt. Washington and the Overlook (what locals call it) are part of the same general ridge line of the mountain line. They are separated by a valley where the town of Temperancville (now the West End) is. One of those big yellow bridges that you see is named the "West End Bridge". It crosses the river to what is known as Pittsburgh's "North Side".
