Having the ability to criticize one's own government and history is one of the ultimate expressions of American patriotism...our founders strived for a peaceful system with the capability for reformative change built-in and with the rights to the processes of such change guaranteed.

I came here to post similar. I've never understood people who consider it unpatriotic to criticize the government in any way. I would argue that it is MORE patriotic to try and improve the great (but certainly imperfect) country we live in to strive toward "a more perfect union", than to sit back and proclaim that the US is #1, can do no wrong and turn a blind eye to injustices, poor policy, or outright wrong-doing. Citizens can (and should) work to right wrongs while still feeling proud, standing during the national anthem, and celebrating our country. You CAN do both!!!!

I think one of the big reasons Americans don't travel abroad much is a lack of free time. When you only get one or two weeks of vacation a year and you own a home, a lot of your time off work is spent on home repairs.

True story: I have a relative who left his law practice to move to the SouthWest (New Mexico or Arizona - I forget) to become a cowboy. He worked on a ranch, as did his wife and kids. While he and his wife have retired, his son is still a cowboy on a ranch. They went from very urban, busy, fast lifestyle, to that of a cowboy. Not for everyone, but they loved it. One thing I'll add about the patriotic displays - There have been 3 events in my life where I bought and decorated with American flags - the Bicentennial (1976), when we bought our first home to hang out front, and after 9/11. Otherwise, you'll see flags at gas stations, government buildings, some homes, and especially around Independence Day (July 4).

We live in rural Texas and are a farming family. My area is mostly all faming, ranching, and oil, so yes, there are plenty of real cowboys here. I agree with your analysis of patriotism too. I think the key word is "super" patriotic. Most people I know are proud of our country but aren't afraid to speak out if we don't like something. It's true you will see lots of flags here, so there's that.

I was just a normal US citizen with love of country but not ultra patriotic. As an anthropologist I enjoyed studying and understanding other people across the globe. That changed when I moved to Europe. The longer I lived there, the more patriotic I became to the USA. Not that I saw the US as better than other places, but rather I grew angry at constantly being told how terrible it is. I had not expected the amount of hatred I encountered in numerous countries. Andre, your approval of US culture is so refreshing and I am thankful for it. Sadly I had very little time to travel since I was there to take part in an international medical research project , so I didn't make it to the southern nations. Perhaps it would have been different in Portugal.

People in the U.S. communicate in more than 350 languages. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, some of the most widely spoken languages other than English are Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Arabic. I met him in Hanover NH back in the late 1970s (I was somewhere around 10-12 but can't remember the exact year). I know we spoke for a little while, but all I remember is when he told me, "I don't like to shake hands with strangers...", and then he put on a real "tough guy" face and finished with, "...especially kids!" But then he smiled, said enjoy your day, and left.

I don't care for Watch Mojo either, but it's not the end of the world. On the languages, it depends. Spanish is the most common language besides English, but in areas with more languages you will encounter them routinely. My city seeks translation services for (and prints in) about 130-160 languages in an average year, in other areas it may be just one or two. There is an Amharic radio station (Ethiopia) in my area as well as a Korean news paper, a Spanish television station, and [you get the idea]. Restaurant menus are oftentimes in English, the language of the owner or the food's culture, and Spanish. Most businesses have signs and advertising in their windows in English, Spanish, and often the more common languages of that neighborhood. Even at protests and organized events there are usually multiple translators either on the PA or in the crowd speaking loudly so people can gather close and hear them, it's quite the experience when that happens. And this is normal! And i love it 😊.

Yeah, traveling is expensive and a luxury. Living expenses are expensive enough. Most people I know struggle just to pay for rent. Rent in my area is around $1,200 a month and that's considered low for a lot of places. Leaving the state can be daunting for expenses, leaving the country is out of the question most times. Traveling overseas is for the rich more often than not. Have to account for the transportation itself, wherever you're staying, if you plan on purchasing any souvenirs, and food. My bank account would cry just thinking about it.

You know - America does have AmTrak train system that goes completely across country - it takes a northern route, a southern route and a middle route and you can pick your stops and stay for a bit and get back on the train - and you can go first class (your own room and eating area etc.) for 1/3 of the cost of flying around America and renting a vehicle. Yes, you wlll have to Uber or short term rent etc if you are staying for sight seeing...but just a suggestion to see a lot in a shorter period of time . . then later you can decide where you want to go and spend more time maybe . . . My parents did this a couple of times and took each of my kids so they could see the US . . they saw alot and learned a lot and just the scenery from the train is awesome . . .

Spanish is definitely the most common second language anywhere, for obvious reasons. Then you have French, which isn't really as common as you'd think, as it is one of the two taught in school, one of your choosing being a required class to take, at least it was for my school. Chinese is actually the second most spoken and learned language, and then many other Asian languages. There is a pretty high percentage of Asians in the US, so it makes sense.

I love America so much, but I'm not blind to our issues, we should all be aware, if we want to improve. That said, the biggest reason most Americans don't travel is because most people only get 1 to 2 weeks a year vacation time and some don't even get that. It's not particularly easy to fly to the other side of the world with only one or two weeks to spend there (not counting travel time). Also, depending on where you live, it can be very expensive to fly to other countries or you need to do multiple stops before you even leave the U.S. I wish everyone could travel beyond our borders, but it's not feasible for many people. Everyone should have at least 3 weeks a year to travel.

Both times I went back East (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York State), the states seemed unbelievably small. It freaked me out. I didn't stop feeling something was wrong until I could look out and see the Rockies. Flying into Chicago freaked me too, because it looked so small from the air compared to photographs, and all the roads out in the country were so dang straight! O'Hare and the traffic, no problem. Drivers weren't any crazier than in Portland or Sea-Tac. Even taxis. Did miss seeing mountains daily, though. And forests.

I haven't seen enough Watchmojo to know if it constantly digs at the US. But they were dead on about lack of international travel being too expensive. I've only been to Canada, and it was mostly as a kid, and we lived only 6 hours away via driving. Heck, a passport alone, for an adult applying the first time, costs $130 US. Round trip from my Oregon city to England ranges from $670 to $754, coach. The last figure is my monthly rent, which is only that cheap because I've lived here since 1991. It'd take me 11 hours and 20 minutes + for a one way flight to London. I don't dare even think of the hotel price! Or food. It'd probably run me around 2 months' income, or more, for one trip. It'll never happen before I die, and I'm 69. But I could have said the same at 20. (And yes, I'm under our national poverty level.)

Regarding the 'patriotic' part, I think what the narrator is trying to say is that there is a significant portion of the population that doesn't feel the need to fly the US flag 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or yell and scream about America being 'the best!'. We will indeed argue loudly among ourselves. BUT.....that is not the same as how quickly we will coalesce if we are attacked. This is the lesson that some people outside the country do not fully grasp about our national character, in my opinion. And if you are interested in a US road trip, Portugal is about the same size as Indiana, if that helps

Many people think that patriotism means things like flag waving and exclaiming how great America is and getting angry with people who say that America has social equity problems that need to be addressed. Yet these same patriots live with hate for other Americans. True patriots genuinely love America and Americans, and work to make our laws more equitable and lives better for all Americans. True patriots reject hate, bigotry, racism and all the ways we ourselves bring our nation down. True patriots have a vision of how America should be and that America could actually become the greatest nation on Earth. I am aware that this sentiment is very unpopular among many people and I am sure I will be hearing from some of them. Bring it on.

1. Food in the US varies greatly by region. Visit NY for for unbelievable Italian/French/British cuisine. The southern states have different styles of BBQ that you won't find anywhere else. The southwest is full of dishes heavily influenced by Mexican culture (New Mexico produces some of the best green chilies in the world) and if you want the best sushi you've seen outside of Japan or South Korea, visit California. 2. If you would like to go on a road trip across the US, I suggest taking the legendary route 66. It will take you all the way across the country, there are plenty of interesting stops along the way and it wouldn't be terribly costly. 3. The wealth distribution issue isn't mojo taking a shot. It is a genuine problem in the US and (along with the difference in standards of education directly tied to wealth) is the cause of much of the civil unrest that the US has experienced in recent years.

Yes, the top 5% hold most of the money, which is true of other countries too, like Brazil. That said, we still have poverty and 1 out of 5 Americans go bankrupt because they can't afford their healthcare bills. That said, a record level of Americans just signed up for Obamacare, which should keep lots of people healthier and out of bankruptcy.
@SighNaps

@@kriswoods7051 The market place that the ACA created has it's own issues. Most pertaining to being unrealistically expensive for the people it was designed to provide services for, and a lack of providers who will accept the insurance (in order to get the ACA passed, the Obama administration had to compromise on the legal obligation of providers to accept it. Which resulted in many of them not doing so). In areas of the country without a plethora of options this renders the services essentially useless. The entire program is based on a system employed in Massachusetts in 2006 under then governor Mitt Romney. The federal government threatened to withdraw financial assistance propping up the MA healthcare system unless Romney reduced the number of uninsured patients receiving expensive care at hospitals due to lack of coverage. This model was his solution (called "Romneycare" at the time) and it was designed to meet the minimum requirements of the federal government to continue to receive the financial assistance, while not stepping on the toes of private insurance providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers and other related entities that contributed to his campaign. In short, a half measure that was held back by corruption.

@@SighNaps Well, before the ACA I could not afford insurance in California and our state allowed for pre-existing conditions, yet the cheapest catastrophic insurance was close to $3000 per mo. The past 4 years, we have been able to get affordable healthcare through the ACA for a third of the price I was quoted before. Yes, the government subsidizes the ACA, but a lot more people are covered. Unfortunately, as you probably know, some states CHOSE not to allow for Medicaid expansion, so the people there have limited options for lower cost care. I think everyone knows that the idea for ACA was based in part from Romney's healthcare for MA - that said, he certainly backed away from it when the Republicans didn't favor it. It was a great idea, though. Currently, over 40 million Americans have Obamacare/ACA, which is the highest amount since it started. So people do not have to lose coverage because they don't have a job or are self-employed, which is a good thing.
@SighNaps

@@kriswoods7051 I agree with almost every point you made and am genuinely glad that you were able to get covered. My most significant gripe is in the complexity of state VS federal jurisdiction. What you mentioned about Medicare expansion is a perfect example. A healthcare system that is fractured between the federal government, state governments, the private industry, and individual providers will never be effective. there are too many middle men. Americans not having their health coverage tied to employment is, in my opinion, one of the most important issues in US politics today. Closely followed by dental work being covered under the same policies. Cheers.

Gun ownership by state is a fun stat to check out. Where I live it is tough to find someone who does not have at least one in their home. Most Americans support helping oppressed nations when they are faced with violent take-overs, as we have always done. Yes, we are like 50 countries. Many would say our success as a nation (in the past) was due to many cultures assimilating into a shared American Culture which was enrichened by that diversity. The wealth gap is indeed increasing, the reasons are many. Montana 2020 Census says White alone 61.6%; Black alone 12.4%; Hispanic 18.7%; Asian alone 6%; American Indian and Alaska Native alone 1.1%; Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone 0.2%; Some Other Race alone 8.4%

the wealth distribution is VERY true. While America is a very rich country its wealth is only held by the top 10% who hold 70% of the wealth. while the bottom 50% only hold like 2% of it, its bad. Most of us are living off of less then the medium wage (which is 75 thousand $) Last year I made 37 thousand $ at 20$ an hour for 40 hours a week, which is a relatively good wage where I live for my education level. (most of the lower wage jobs start around 9 to 10 $ an hour but in the last few years have seen a jump to about 13 to 15$ an hour if your lucky)

I don't geel the video was overly critical. I mean I didn't hear anything that was said to be untrue. I do think it goes back to the bubble you were talking about. Don't get me wrong, this country is amazing. I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. But we are FAR from perfect. And most of the stuff you will react to, and comments you will read are always going to slant extremely positive, and give you a specific perspective. The country is vast, and so are the issues and people in it. We don't all feel the same way about basically anything. lol Look at our politics, its a polarizing circus. And the wealth disparity is grossly out of control in this country. The gap between the rich and the poor increases more every year, and the middle class barely exists. You could even argue it doesn't exist anymore, for the average American. I really do think people outside of this country who react to American stuff get an extremely biased, romanticized version of this country that isn't the actual experience of the average or below average American. And again, I don't fault that. Why would you seek out looking for the bad in another country? lol So I get it, and enjoy the reactions. But from politics, military, police, social issues, wealth, etc, you're always going to be presented with the best sides of those things when it comes to the comments or the videos you react to.

To answer your question "Do you think Watch Mojo is a bit critical of America?" As an American aware of our politics and the struggles 90% of Americans go through, I say yes, Watch Mojo is being critical but are also stating the truth and the criticism is deserved and not aimed at the people so much as the elite of America. For you to ask that from that little bit of criticism I can only assume you have a likely unrealistic view of what life is like for Americans. But that's ok, I just ask you to keep in mind your view may not be as reliable as the opinions or experiences of the people who live here in America. I love your obvious love for my country. You can dislike certain things about America (our politics, government) and still love the culture, people and so on - that's certainly the case for me. You also don't have to voice your criticisms of things you dislike if you don't want to but remember plenty of Americans are at least privately critical of their own government and politicians no matter how they identify. What the video had as number one is my favorite thing about my country: the diversity of people and what they bring and how that can fuse with other cultures to create something new and unique to America specifically. The diversity of people is something I'm very proud of as an American and I love when anyone who isn't American visits or wants to move here. All are welcome here as far as I'm concerned. America for all its flaws is no less still a wonderful and beautiful place. Hope you fulfill your dream of traveling across our beautiful country. You're right the US is amazing. I know plenty of other places have things worse than us daily even without a war going on. But we do have our problems too, including ones you may be shocked by. We can be happy to be in the US when put in perspective, but our government still deserves our criticism more often than not. Road trips are very popular among Americans. Some live in their vehicles to get the most out of the sights as they travel and save money in the long run when it comes to where you sleep. Usually, people who do this do so after retiring, during a rare vacation or still work but do so online so they can work anywhere they can get access to internet.
