I can't believe you responded to all our comments so quickly!!!! I had hoped that I hadn't offended you with all my suggestions but the BLT means so much to me. See, every summer when my Father retired, he planted a select garden with his much loved tomatoes. He would check his tomatoes every day and pick them when they were perfect. Then he'd make the biggest BLT I've ever seen! He'd use 1/2 lb of bacon and a huge tomato. He'd make his toast and put MIracle Whip mayo on it followed by the bacon, tomatoes and lettuce. I can still see him taking that first bite with the tomato juice running down his arms and his eyes closed as he savored that beloved sandwich. Well, Dad is gone now but every year when the tomatoes come in, I replicate that sandwich but the only difference between our sandwiches are the tears coming from my eyes as I remember my hero and his love of his BLTs. Thanks so much for bringing back these memories of warm summer evenings eating the best sandwich while I freeze in a cold Minnesota winter. God bless!

Andrè, the big chunk of bacon makes me think of something we call salt pork, which is definitely stronger tasting and more fatty. I use salt pork when I make a big pot of beans to give them the smoky pork flavor. So don't waste it! You can cut what is left into two chunks, and freeze it. Then the next time you make a pot of beans or vegetable stew, you can use a chunk to give it so much flavor while it cooks .

I have a friend from India who married an American woman. They would split their time together 50/50 living in the US and living in India. Part of learning each others cultures was trying each others food. The day finally came when she was eating a BLT at a cafe. Taboos meant he had never tried pork, but in the name of love, he ordered one himself. He said it was almost orgasmic. His friends back home gave him flak for it, akin to calling him a sinner, but he said he loved it.

You did a great job, Andre! The bacon that was cooked in the oven, seemed to be the closest one to American bacon and it cooked up beautifully! The one that you cooked in the frying pan was close too, but I think the color of the fat made you nervous. That kind of yellow coloring on the fat just means that it was smoked, instead of cured. When the fat has been exposed to smoke it's just a natural reaction and it's perfectly good to eat. I was so pleased to see your lovely wife in the video! She seems like such a sweetheart! In the American South, bacon is fatty and salty and smoky, and the tomatoes are grown in the backyard. For a BLT, we use "sandwich bread", which is made with butter and milk in addition to the usual flour, water, yeast, and salt. The best bread is homemade. If it tastes great, there should be no issue. I know people who don't eat pork and make their BLT with Turkey bacon and they love it. You don't live in the USA so you will need to opt for the best you can find and that is good enough. I am not mad at your BLTs from yesterday. Don't let the haters get you down. If I went to Portugal and ordered a BLT, I would honestly expect it to be different. Anyone who has ever shopped in Europe knows that products are often different than in the U.S. We fatten out pigs here, that is the honest truth, we do the same with out cattle. Save your bacon grease and use it later for flavor in beans, for frying eggs, potatoes or sauteeing greens. I put the fat in a piece of foil in the refrigerator then when it is set, break it into small pieces and put it either in a container or a freezer bag and store it in the freezer. Bacon grease or duck fat are gold in the kitchen. Use the bacon, it will be fine in a sandwich, just doin't add salt to your sandwich.25

Yes, I read some of the comments yesterday and was ashamed of some of my fellow Americans. It's one thing to say the bacon in America and Europe is different, but too many people didn't stop there. We do the same thing as Andre when cooking recipes from other countries - if we can't get the authentic ingredients, we substitute with the closest thing that is available. It's good to know how authentic what you're eating is, but the bottom line is whether it tastes good to you. 25.

Heart disease is BAD in my dad’s family, so my mom has always been very health conscious in her cooking. Since the amount of fat is SO MUCH LOWER in turkey substitute meats, that what she uses the VAST MAJORITY of the time; not only turkey bacon, but turkey hot dogs, ground turkey ( instead of ground beef); my dad will even cook turkey filet mignons wrapped in turkey bacon on the BBQ grill.

I have seen health magazines compare turkey bacon and pork bacon made by the same companies and the turkey bacon was always less healthier because what needs to be added to make it taste like pork bacon.

25. That's awesome your wife was willing to come on! Glad you like this one better, it might not exactly be American bacon but it looked close enough. The crispy bits are so good. It's been a while since I had a blt last, couple months at least but they're great. I enjoy them often when going out.

Hi from Southern California. Another thing you can do with the leftover bacon grease is make a version of what we called "greasy bread" as a child. But only if you aren't concerned about cholesterol. Carefully heat the grease in a small saucepan until it darkens and just begins to smoke...watch it like a hawk! Then spoon some onto two slices of the rustik bread, and make a sandwich with thinly sliced raw onion, cucumber, tomato, and bell pepper. We made this whenever we had a picnic or cookout, using pieces of salt pork skewered on longhandled picnic forks and held over a charcoal or wood fire. The pork was pressed against the bread when it started to drip. So good, and healthy if you just think about the vegetables.

Oh Andre, the sensible Americans understand you and Europe don’t have access to certain ingredients and bacon is tricky to ship to you. I still appreciate you went back to try to perfect it, in all honesty we just enjoy watching you do the process to learn the little things. It’s nice to get your wife’s reaction to what you are able to cook, appreciate you guys shared it! Btw I can’t think of the last time I had a BLT, maybe a year ago, I always feel like if I cook bacon might as well add an egg so it’s not precisely a BLT. I actually skip the tomatoes and lettuce lol 😆

Andre, you're still my favorite honorary American chef. I wasn't disappointed in you. I was a little disappointed seeing Portuguese bacon for a BLT. And, I understand how challenging it can be to get specific ingredients that are common in other countries. Kudos to you for going above and beyond. I'm so glad you and your wife got to experience the real thing. Merry Christmas to you and yours, too.

People have to understand you use what you have. American products aren't available everywhere as Portuguese products aren't. You did an amazing job, thank you for thinking enough of America to try the delicious foods. You are as American as most who can't or won't try to cook. When will I stop yelling at the screen during one of your cooking videos? 🤣 One of the points of the BLT is that the bacon is very salty and crispy. The lettuce and tomato are bland. The combination is magic. And you want that fat as there is no other fat other than the mayo. It is the balance, my Portuguese friend. Trust the process. This recipe is legendary in the US for a reason.

Welcome to The States! The bacon makes all the difference. That Portuguese tomato looked phenomenal! It was definitely what we refer to as a "slicer" or "beefsteak" here in America, best grown yourself, or purchased from a local farmer during peak season; perfect for sandwiches. Now try your hand at a "club" sandwich or a grilled cheese with bacon sandwich once your cholesterol count is back in the safe zone. :D

Yeah big tomatoes at grocery stores rarely have a lot of flavor. I usually just get vine-on tomatoes in the winter even if they're smaller.
@christiroseify19 сағат бұрын
Nice job slicing the pork belly, one trick for thin slicing, you can partially freeze the meat before you slice. There is no such thing as too much fat on the bacon...lol You are so right about your tomato... it looks delicious I'll bet your butter is better than ours also. The difference in the bacon is that you tasted the pan fried plain without the lettuce, tomato and bread and mayo.. lol It was all the same bacon, pan or oven only affect the crispiness. I'm with your wife, my favorite food will always be a sandwich... pick your flavor...hehehe Merry Christmas to you and your lovely wife, Andre

The bacon that was baked in the oven looks perfect! Your end result also looks perfect! For my family and I, BLTs are a seasonal treat, because we have a vegetable garden. Once you've had a BLT with a thick slice of home-grown, perfectly ripe beefsteak tomato, no sandwich with a sad, store-bought tomato will ever match it. I always get thick-cut bacon and pile it on, and prefer romaine lettuce. A nice crusty bread like you have there is exactly what I would go for, though i am also a big fan of using sourdough. That Portuguese tomato looked beautiful, but really, nothing beats a fresh one from your own garden. They might as well be entirely different vegetables! My favorite big slicing-sized tomatoes lately are Berkeley Pink Tie-Dye, Mortgage Lifter, Abe Lincoln, Black Krim, and a newer hybrid called Cherokee Carbon. I really like the darker, "purple" or "black" varieties because they tend to have an incredible richness and depth to their flavor that can be lacking in other types. That said, I happen to be over in the US so I have no idea what available varieties there are for gardening enthusiasts in Portugal. I bet the weather is spectacular for growing them, though!
