My first vehicle was a '76 Dodge D-100, then a F-250, then after that I had a 1980 D-50 for 30yrs and had five other D-50's at the same time (some were parts trucks). I no longer have any pickups, I got tired of the "hey, I'm moving and you have a truck). I now just have an '86 2door Isuzu Trooper, I don't get that question anymore 👍👍

This 70-year-old grandma drives a red Ford F150. Good for hauling stuff from the garden center, stuff to the dump, furniture to or from the thrift store, etc. I don't have to ask around and borrow anybody's truck. I used to drive a 1996 Ford Ranger, but it bit the dust. I still miss it. 😞

Owning a Big-Ass Truck, without Guilt or Responsibility, is a privileged offered to few people but Americans. It is like owning many Guns, or having 5 Big Houses just for you to live in, moving freely from one to another as if you needed them, while poor American families stand in line at the local homeless shelter, trying to keep their children warm enough in winter to be kept alive. I appreciate the usefulness of trucks & SUVs. I owned a Ford Expedition (Eddie Bauer) and I LOVED IT. I also loved my Glock-19, my Winchester Super X4 Duck-Hunting Shotgun, and my 'Browning X-Bolt 2' Deer-Hunting Rifle. And owning all of these items felt like 'a Right'. - But maybe it wasn't my right - maybe it was just an unfair Privilege.

@@Estenberg you can buy a truck for less than 5 grand. its not a right, its a culture and a way of life. my closest friend family was dirt pour and barely made enough to afford food and rent. yet they were able to get a truck for cheap. you dont need to buy the newest model. even a 30 year old truck is just as capable as any new truck. trucks also become like family over time, you rely on them. they do all the heavy lifting for you....literally. ive owned the same truck since 2011. @fasteddie617 Exactly. Trucks and cars are part of our culture because we have so much open land to navigate. Many people live in rural towns or out in the wide open spaces. It fuels our lifestyle of outdoor activities like camping, visiting national parks, road trip vacations, and doing things like going to Lowe's to buy things for home projects, helping others or even doing maintainence at your local church or other organizations. Americans like to be in control of things in their lives as much as possible. Trucks are becoming a must in most people's lives. Now, with the expanded seat passenger cab, it can be the most practical vehicle to own.

Haul dirt bikes and 4 wheelers to the track, Haul boat, Haul lumber, haul water for cistern, tow my tractor, side by side, lawn mower, mulch, Haul feed for animals, fishing and hunting gear and trips. 2 sets of scaffolding and 2 ladders in it now. Yeah, General Motors is a big company (at one point I think they might have been the largest American company by some measures), and they sell vehicles under multiple brand names: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC Truck, Cadillac, etc. Chrysler does the same thing, with a different set of brands (Plymouth, Dodge, etc.). Ford, as far as I know, just brands everything they make as Ford, although of course they have model names, like F-150 and so on; every company that makes more than one product does that. And yes, Ram is a model of Dodge pick-up, in the same way that F-150 is a Ford pick-up.

A truck gives you safety. It makes you higher in your vehicle so you look "down" at the people around you...not in a mean or nasty way but being higher gives better vision than that little car beside you. My husband has been dead for over 16 years but the last vehicle he owned was a Ford F-150. He had a CB radio in the house where he talked skip late at night. Talking skip means the operator is talking to people all over the world. We lived in Nashville, Tennessee but he talked to people from as far away as Ireland and Australia. His truck was a particular shade of blue called Midnight Blue and he used Midnight Blue as his CB handle. I sometimes talked skip also and I used the handle Midnight Lady. We would load our dog into the bed of the truck and take him to the lake late at night and my husband would just turn Colter loose and let him run free. He would disappear and be gone sometimes for as long as 30 minutes and then he would come running back and jump into the bed of the truck in case we were ready to leave. If we did not make any move to leave he would jump back down and take off again and every so often he would check back in to see if we were ready to go home. That truck was very handy when it came to carrying large purchases from the store but it also was ideal for hauling our dog around. I liked to drive it but that sucker was BIG and while I was pretty good at driving it, I was not real good at parking it. Both my husband and I loved that truck!

I was good friends with a 'Trucker" who taught me about the value of having a CB, so I installed one. It took me over a moth to learn all of the terms & code-words - but I did. Then driving on the highway became like being in a Club, or a Fraternity, or even a Secret Society, or a Cult. But in the 1970s & 80s, having a CB Radio in your vehicle was essential - not like now, when every little bit of communication is done through Cellphones. Big professional trucks once had 18 wheels, and a small apartment to live in. Now - who knows?

Trucks like the Toyota Tundra are competing in the F-150/1500 series pick-up market, but only the North American manufacturers are producing the 2500, 3500 and other bigger series above that. Offered with an abundance of cab configurations, bed configurations, heavy duty suspensions, multiple gas, or diesel engine sizes and dually rear wheel configurations. -I've exclusively driven pickup trucks since college. My first was a custom '72 Chevy 1/2 ton, and it's been Chevy's ever since. Currently I have my usual ride which is a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 4x4 off road equipped. Also have my late dad's 2001 Silverado 3/4 ton as a backup. Retired lady now, but I have lived on a farm and had horses, hay, feed and lumber to haul all my life, plus live in Northern Minnesota, where a full-sized 4 wheel drive comes in real handy over our long snowy winters. -We always had domestic oil, but the easy stuff was sort of petering out. And we were used to buying it cheaper from the Middle East than getting it domestically. -My truck doesn't use a lot of gas. It's a big V-8 engine, but gets 18-25 mpg - city driving vs. highway. Keep in mind, the U.S. Feds and states don't tax the heck out of fuel like the Europeans do (except for California). -This video comes off as a Ford commercial. -Those redesigned Dodge trucks were awesome looking and Earth-shattering. Instant classics. -2 years ago was Covid or Covid recovery, massive inflation because of over-the-top wasteful gov't spending, the prices for EVERYTHING went nuts and still haven't normalized. Thus - Trump got elected three days ago. Didn't make a difference BTW. Everybody still has trucks. -I will never own a "battery" truck in N. Minnesota. It would be a damned death trap. Not reliable in ultra-cold weather.

Andre, I owned a 1977 El Camino in the past, a 1969 Dodge D100 with manual steering. The reason gas prices went up in 2021 is regulatory policies in Washington DC, reduce production through regulation makes gas prices go up, and gas is hovering around $3 a gallon, but when these regulations are lifted and oil production can go back up, and more refineries can produce more gasoline, the more of something, and the cheaper the production the less something costs.

I currently own a white 2001 Chevy (Chevrolet) Silverado 1500 that I inherited from my Dad when he passed away. It's got plenty of power for my needs, it's durable and reliable with it only have a few minor issues and one major but expected (at it's age and mileage) issue that being the transmission needing rebuilt a few years ago. One of the many good things about a Chevy pickup is that whatever does need replaced or repaired never costs too much. The reason is the way Chevy made their vehicle is most of the parts are interchangeable between different models like the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and others even onto the GMC models. To clarify GMC is the parent company of Chevrolet as well as Cadillac, and Buick also Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Saturn before those last 4 went out of business. Just like Chrysler is the parent company of Dodge, Jeep, Ram and also Plymouth before they went out of business. And Ford is the parent company of Lincoln and Mercury before they went out of business also.

I currently have a 2015 Nissan Frontier, which is a bit smaller than competing trucks like the F150- I sometimes use it to haul luggage, livestock feed, tires or building materials for a side hustle. I've been able to rent a much larger truck (Ram 1500) when I travel to the east coast and notice the bigger vehicle performs about the same as my smaller truck when it comes to fuel economy or manuverability. Chevy and GMC trucks are very similar, but I think the difference is GMC has some kind a proprietary powertrain that makes it distinct enough to sell under a different brand. Ford and RAM also have sports/performance versions of the F150 or Ram 1500- Shelby for Ford and the Rebel or Warlock version for RAM. Midsized trucks are making a comeback- for a while, the only manufacturers were Japanese (Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier) but Chevrolet introduced the Colorado, GMC came out with the Canyon (very similar to the Colorado) and Ford reintroduced the Ranger after halting production in 2011. I have seen a few full size RAM 1500s in the Pyrenees region of France, so trucks that size aren't completely unheard of in parts of the EU.

Outside major northern cities, most Americans own homes with yards, and many own homes on larger acreage. Trucks are useful for transporting gardening equipment and supplies. Many Americans also have hobbies that benefit from trucks (for example, woodworkers use trucks to transport wood). I used my truck to carry camping equipment when I was a scoutmaster in my son’s Boy Scout troop. There are even “slide-on” campers for trucks. It is NOT just a status symbol, at least not in the heartland.

I have owned several trucks over the years. Always handy. You need to haul something, you can. No problems trying to get something delivered or hauled away, you just do it yourself. The only down side to driving a truck instead of a car is the gas milage. And since I seldom needed to drive all that far gas milage wasn`t much of a big deal.

I’m not sure what you do without a truck in the family, there are so many uses for them. I passed my late husband’s Ford F-150 platinum down to our son, who in turn passed his F-150 down to his son. I bought a small Toyota Tacoma for myself for yard work etc, but I have a sedan for comfort. I can’t imagine not having a truck handy to use. If I had to choose between my sedan & my little truck, I would choose my truck, even though it rides awful.

Trucks have become the only vehicle a lot of families own. They can seat up to six comfortably and still haul 5 tons of stuff. I personally have four that serve specialized needs (towing, hauling, running errands for my hobbies, etc). I also have a truck as a company vehicle in the energy industry. Here in my part of Texas, seeing regular sedans or coupes is more weird than seeing trucks..

Last year we went to visit my sister for Christmas in our more gas efficient sedan. When we came back home we discovered it had snowed 3 feet right in our driveway and the snowplow left an even deeper pile of snow right in front of our driveway. So, someone hiked through the deep snow, got the F-150, and essentially "plowed" right through the 3 ft snow. The truck also plowed or, more accurately, launched right through the deep snow pile in front of the driveway. This allowed us to drive the sedan right up to the house. F-150's really are pretty amazing in rough environments.

A couple of points missed in North America's love of the pick-up truck. Before the European and Japanese invasion of vehicles into the Americas, there were three major automotive manufacturers, known as The Big Three: FORD, GMC (General Motors Corporation) and Chrysler/Dodge. Note that all of these companies had special truck divisions and produced many much larger trucks that pick-up trucks. FORD manufactures the F-150 (1/2 ton) and several heavier pick-up models above that. GMC produces pick-up trucks under the GMC badge and Chevrolet (Chevy), starting with 1500 series and several models above that. Chrysler/Dodge created the RAM division for pick-up trucks, starting with their 1500 series and several models above that. Prior to World War II pick-up trucks were the domain of farmers, small delivery services and any tradesman who need a rugged commercial vehicle to carry tools and equipment. Men returned from the war, having driven reliable trucks throughout and had a new appreciation for pick-up truck versatility, durability and ease of service. Over time, the pick-up truck evolved from a single cab with a bench seat that could 3 people, to crew cabs and super cabs seating 5 or more people. When horse power pollution controls were mandated in cars, trucks followed a few years later, turning a lot of people to trucks. During the time of the gas wars, many people turned to trucks with diesel engines, which had been available for commercial trucks for years. When American cars were downsized, people turned to full size pick-up trucks. People recognized the safety of the full sized pick-up truck when it's involved in a collision with a regular or compact car. When downsized cars converted to front wheel drive, truck remained with 2 wheel, rear wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options. Front wheel drive cars now combined the engine and transmission crammed under the hood, making them difficult and expensive to work on. The home mechanic could repair a truck much easier and at lower cost. Cabs became more luxurious with "automobile features" and people no longer need a truck for work and a more luxurious car to haul the family or attend the most classy events. Over the last 10 years the pick-up truck has been upgraded with every luxury and electronic feature that is available on the most high end cars. Their complexity has removed much of the ability to repair it in the driveway and the price of new truck is equal, or often exceeds the cost of high-end luxury vehicles.

lol the days of the Toyota Corolla are NOT over. I drive a silver Toyota Corolla and it's one of the most common cars on the road. One thing that happens often is that I will go to look for my car in a parking lot and I will see two other ones that look exactly the same. I've definitely walked to the wrong car before. There are ups and downs with trucks. There is one thing about them that gets on my nerves. I hate that they are getting so big that they take up two spaces in a parking lot. It's so annoying when I think I'm going to pull into an empty space and park my car, only to realize that 15% of someone's pickup is taking up the space so I can't park there, and then I have to make sure no one is behind me me, and back up (and if there is someone behind me, I have to try to signal for them to back up too). It's not the end of the world when it happens, but it's starting to become more and more common.

Ive had many trucks throughout the years. They are awesome if you need to move large things around or carry lots if tools or materials. If you travel on rough dirt roads they have a high clearance (think going camping/hunting in a remote area). The one drawback was the high gas mileage, now they are making hybrids with great mileage and great engines.

That may be true in the northeast, but in the South, trucks are very useful. The little trucks don’t have the towing capacity to pull a camping trailer of any significant size, and many Southerners have hobbies for which trucks are useful. I am an attorney, but woodworking is one hobby making a truck very useful. I also used my truck when I was a scoutmaster in my son’s Boy Scout troop (I carried camping equipment for the boys). A truck is also useful in transporting my bicycles and kayaks to state parks. Someone who only observed me going to work might think the way you do!

I’m not arguing that small trucks are not useful, but instead that those of us with travel trailers require the larger trucks with sufficient towing capacity. Just because someone who works in an office has a large truck doesn’t mean that he or she doesn’t have some recreational purpose for the truck.

No matter what any news company says we have the most abundant resources in America. Oil is by far the best resource we have tons of it for several hundred years to come. Our production and reaction time sucks when they have to pick up the slack to offset what we used to buy oversees during conflict. We have the cheapest gas which is offset by how much we produce. We would rather buy oil from oversees so that in the event of a crisis we will never run out and can keep our military fueled. Its finding the exact balance that we can siphon off other countries without being totally reliant on them. Basically all other countries will run out before we do and they better home their military fleet has some newer fuel source to burn because ours will never run out.

Doesn't really matter where you are everybody wants a 4x4. I am a dealer and I get 2wd trucks every now and then and they are hard to sell most the time. Most of the 2wd trucks are stripped down base models. Snow pretty much never happens here on the SC coast but still everybody wants one. For years I had 2wd trucks but my last 2 personal trucks have been 4x4. I think I might have had to use it one or 2 times ever and never in my new Denali Ultimate. The Ultimate can't be bought 2wd anyway about the only option is paint color and if its a half ton can get the 6.2 or LZ0 Duramax the HD trucks all come with the 6.6 Duramax. Only crew cab only one bed length, all get the same interior just get to pick paint color and every option basically comes standard like driving an Escalade.

On US and oil; Fun fact: Oil was first discovered in Oil City, Pennsylvania and was first used as a replacement for whale-oil derived from the whale blubber from whaling ships sailing out of New England. The first use was for liquid products like kerosene for lamps and originally the heavier chains such as gasoline were dumped as a waste product because they didn't know how to use them. Eventually the invention of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and diesel engine began to make use of gasoline and diesel petroleum and advancements in petrochemistry helped develop many other petroleum products we use today including modern thermoplastics, thermosets, synthetic rubbers, synthetic fibers (nylon, polyester, aramid, etc), oils, lubricants, etc... Today, the US as a whole produces more crude oil per day than any other country in the world; however, this wasn't always the case and even today the US as a whole is still a patchwork of oil-rich vs. oil-poor regions, some of which are still reliant on imported crude (i.e. California still imports crude since no oil pipelines were built across the Rocky Mountains). The US primarily has deep heavy crude oil resources (and the newer shale oil deposits), whereas places like the Middle East have light sweet crude; which is easier to extract and easier to process (refine), so simply put in a global economic market, it was cheaper to extract oil from places like the Middle East and ship it around the world than it was to develop more expensive crude resources; as basic economics drives development of those resources first. However, once a refinery is built for specific oil supply input, it cannot easily accept other types of crude oil (i.e. light sweet crude refineries cannot refine deep heavy crude and vice versa). Many of the U.S. East Coast refineries in the 1970's were built for light sweet crude, whereas today, many of the Texas refineries use deep heavy American crude. So back then, if you suddenly stopped the supply of light sweet crude coming from the Middle East, the US oil refining complex couldn't immediately switch to American heavy crude, leaving America vulnerable to an oil supply shock. Today, the US, except for the West Coast, largely exports refined oil products and is not reliant on Middle Eastern oil; the majority of Middle Eastern oil goes to Asia (China) and some to Europe. However, oil, and particularly refined oil products operate in a globalized market, so if supplies are interrupted, say by the Houthi's attacking shipping in the Red Sea; then other nations can come to America to compete for American oil (crude or refined product) and ship it over seas, at the cost of about $5 - 10/barrel, which is the spread between the cost of Brent (European North Sea Oil) and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) depending on the price of shipping. On trucks: Trucks are bigger and heavier (more road stability and crash survivability), are often more comfortable for bigger guys, you have better road vision since you sit higher and they can carry a lot of stuff (i.e. materials, tools, furniture, etc.). Big American trucks are not really practical in cities (especially old cities), but for rural and suburban Americans who tend to have a lot of open space, wide roads/ travel long distances and have little to no public transportation options, trucks can be a very practical vehicle to carry large item goods or move building materials from the home improvement store. Work trucks are practical tools used by everyday tradesmen (carpenters, construction workers, handymen, etc.) and farmers. So perhaps their everyday utility and the image of the blue collar American working man who's independent and builds things for themselves helps to create the mystique around the truck trend. "Tough, rugged" trucks are typically marketed towards men, and I think men resonant with this sort of icon. I have a 2018 Ram 1500 truck and although I now live in the suburbs closer to a major city, I use to live in a rural area and it made a lot more sense out there.

I think they should try to sell more hybrid trucks before jumping into full electric. People would feel more relaxed if they could use a common fuel to keep their drive train charged. GM offers the LZ0. No hybrid but it gets outrageous fuel mileage. I average around 26mpg hit as high as 38.9 on the highway. Uses hardly any diesel and its the only diesel you can get in a half ton. I know some people get better fuel mileage than I do but I don't drive trying to get every last MPG out of my truck and its a Denali Ultimate so with all that extra stuff on it, its probably a bit heavier than more stripped down trucks. I know some people claim more like 30mpg in theirs not sure if that is true or not but I guess if they drive mostly on the highway mine is a mix of city, highway, and country roads about 26mpg. The Ram doesn't have it anymore they are all straight 6 turbos now but they had the 5.7 hybrid and it didn't really seem to make much of a difference in MPGs. These turbo v6s too don't get any better fuel mileage than a v8. Maybe if you drive like a granny but there really isn't much of a difference. If I was buying an F150 I would prefer a 5.0. I did look at a Limited but I think those can only be had with the 3.5 HO like the Raptor has because that was what was in the truck I looked at and I think that is the only engine option for that trim.

When you spend several hours a day in your vehicle, buying bigger and more comfortable is like buying a bigger couch or bed. And I despise the F-150 for many reasons that I won’t get into because it’d be too long. But I will say one thing, that I have a problem with a lot of F-150 owners because a lot of them drive with a sort of “king of the road” mentality. I’ve been cut off in traffic by them forcing me to slam my brakes, and more commonly they take off first in intersections when they even don’t have the right of way to go first.
