Scottie Scheffler returns to Austin Country Club to defend his title at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. By doing so, he would become the first person since Tiger Woods in 2004 to do so. The event will see 64 players, split into 16 groups of four compete in a round-robin format. After this, the player with the most points advances to single elimination play. Eight out of nine of the top players in the world with Ryder Cup teammates Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy both teeing it up in Texas. The Spaniard has been grouped with Rickie Fowler who, despite not winning on tour in over four years could prove a formidable opponent, having made the cut in every PGA TOUR event in 2023. McIlroy won the event in 2015 in which was the last WGC Match Play before it moved from Harding Park, California to Austin, Texas. Other notable names to look out for include 2021 winner Billy Horschel, two-time winner Jason Day and World No. 9 Viktor Hovland.

Pretty near 100% (well realistically, probably not from that distance, most guys are probably trying to just cozy it up, but the circumatances forced him to try his best to make it). If you are trying to do something, and you successfully do it, it's not luck. Give him credit, it was a phenomenal putt.

Pretty unlucky for Lucas to get paired against Rory in the Round of 16, he would have beaten 8 or 9 of the other 14 in the bracket with the way he played in this match. its match play not stroke play. Rory needed to make that putt to tie hole but he missed it so he was just taking a practice putt

The main difference (as I recall) is that with Stroke Play, all shots are counted, so retaking shots creates a penalty. In Match Play, each hole is independent and once completed, the game starts on the next hole and the completed hole no longer is in play. This means practice putts are allowed.

I watched both matches today. How many times did the washed-up old guys in the booth say that Rory was "under pressure" or something similar? I know they are trying to maintain suspense, but weren't the other guys also under pressure. I don't think announcers give Rory nearly enough credit for his greatness. They salivate at the mere mention of Tiger, but seem to look for excuses to question Rory.

Lucas Herbert was dismissive when describing the challenge that faced him with McIlroy yesterday after learning he'd be facing him. I understand not wanting to appear overmatched but his comments seemed disrespectful and unwarranted considering his stature and I bet McIlroy heard 'em and was motivated by them. I never understand why an underdog gives locker room fodder to their opponent who is clearly more accomplished. Lucas Herbert reminded me of Stephen Ames here.
