There's something about it that just seems more genuine than most other raunch coms. Even though the core four each have some stiffness in their performances, they really do seem to just be having a good time teasing and supporting each other, so it's got heart. They tried just enough but not too hard to make the plot make sense, so it's unpretentious but not just random. And the comedy somehow struck a great balance of iconic jokes and lines and scenes and cameos, and plenty of dumb stuff, so it ends up being super easy to laugh at and have a fun time.

Matt Damon has explained why he did the cameo in EuroTrip. The main reasons were: 1.) Personal connections: The movie was written by three of his college friends from Harvard - Alec Shaffer, Jeff Berg, and Dave Mandell. 2.) Convenient timing: Damon was already in Prague filming "The Brothers Grimm" when EuroTrip was being shot there. 3.) Fun opportunity: His friends asked if he would play "a Henry Rollins kind of insane, bad version of a suburban punk band guy" and Damon agreed. 4.) Family affair: Damon considered it a "family affair" as he had multiple connections to the project, including his college roommate appearing as the guitarist in the band. 5.) Willingness to commit to the role: Damon even allowed them to shave his head for the part, as he was wearing a wig for "The Brothers Grimm" anyway.

Eurotrip is an odd duck in that it falls into the company of the "raunchy sex comedy" revival of the late 90s/early 00s, but it doesn't hang the majority of its identity on that like the others do. It's got the most broadly offensive stereotypes of all those films, but it's also the least malicious or meanspirited in that regard. It's often thought of as simple "dumb" comedy, but it's far smarter in its set-up and delivery than people give it credit for. For my money, it's head and shoulders above the pack... and it stands up 20 years later so much better than the rest. Infinitely more quotable, too.
