Eurovision 1962 - Netherlands

De Spelbrekers performing "Katinka", the Dutch entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest.
The fourth song that year to score the dreaded "nul points" (along with Belgium, Spain and Austria) and the one that deserved it less, IMO. Not that it's a winner, but this upbeat, catchy number was one of the year's most memorable numbers and should have done better. At least, its disastrous showing at the voting didn't prevent it from becoming a hit and a classic of early 60s Eurovision. Oh, and the screen going black at the middle of the performance isn't due to the video quality - that is actually how European viewers saw it on the night, since a technical glitch with the broadcast caused this rather unfortunate mishap (foretelling of the song's luck, perhaps?).

The composer of this song, Joop Stokkermans, died today at the age of 75. All the dutch children from the 50's through to the 90's have grown up with his music. This man and his talent will be missed.
