After all the rehearsals, interviews, and listening to the songs, Portugal has finally risen to be my #1. I'm still convinced that the song would not be nearly as effective if anyone else sang it, but the Sobral family collaboration is some kind of magical.

When I heard you say Portugal it made me cry. The minute he starting singing in the first semi final in Festival da Canção I just knew that that was the song we needed to take to Eurovision, even though it is sooooooo different from what we usually hear there and what usually wins but it was so perfect that it needed to be chosen. And now being one of the favourites and your favourite, it's just priceless. We might not win (though as we say in portuguese "a esperança é a última a morrer" - hope dies last) but at least we took something beautiful, that really shows what we are about and what we do and that will forever live within all of us and by us I mean anyone that has ever listened to this brilliant, magical song

Portugal is my favorite. It's the song that I heard and loved instantly, then the staging works wonderfully for it as well, and it's not in English. Maybe it's because it was selected a few days after I started to learn Portuguese, maybe it's because it makes me nostalgic for my childhood listening to music with my grandfather and watching classic musicals with my grandmother, maybe it's because Salvador sings it so beautifully with so much emotion that you can understand and feel the whole song without knowing a single word of Portuguese. I love it and I want it to do well.

Well, she doesn't have to dig the song just because it's from her homeland, you know. I'm from Sweden and I don't love "I can't go on" to bits. The reason I love Portugal, or Salvador Sobral rather, is the sincerity in his expression and the blissful deliverance by him of the simple yet beautiful song - a song that could have been in the competition any year since start of it, it would have been perfect 1956, 1978, 1993, 2005 or now, 2017 alike. I also love the look of the guy, Salvador Sobral that is. He looks spastic. Like some mentally ill street musician that some producers just picked from the street. "Hey, do you wanna compete for Portugal in Eurovsion Song Contest?" This is a competition full of pretenders and I love it to bits, but whenever something comes with this stroke of genius and genuineness (this is not an act) it simply just must win.

So what you're saying is that if someone who isn't "spastic" performed it in his stead, it'd lose points in your opinion? That's what your remark implies at least. I don't think that's a good thing. Not to mention, songs that were equally genuine got the silent treatment before so why is this guy so special? Anyway, moving on and back to sharing opinions ('cause I want to believe that this implication is not what you were trying to go for); I believe a winning song should have more than just good lyrics and a genuine artist singing them. It should have a nice voice, a nice, matching act (it's euroVISION after all, not the Voice of Europe), and I'd prefer it to be something that isn't either sleep-inducing or a bouncy joke (anyone remember Ukraine's travestite? Georgia's flashy scientist? yeah...). Something that is balanced, calm and sincere, nice lyrics that can be related to and at the same time not some sort of stale lullaby or too techno upbeat happy go jojo (lol I don't even know how to describe all of the weirdness that showed up throughout the years). It doesn't even have to be in English. I understand a fair bit of languages, so the language barrier is definitely not a concern here. Now if someone can manage to do all that, I'm willing to call it genius. Guess I'm getting too old and a new generation is taking over with different tastes xP Either way, I hope Portugal doesn't win. Not just because I don't think it's a winning song, but because Portugal can't afford to host the Eurovision. If it does win... well, party country for one day and then lots of tears afterwards, I suppose :P

You're right about the studio versions - increasingly this contest is less about the studio version and more about the performance version. In the last few years the winner has come from the country that matches singer, song and performance on the night. (PS: Good luck Lucy!)

Portugal's song, music and lyrics were written by Salvador's sister. The song is even more special because it has a hidden message...Salvador has a serious, life threatening, heart condition ...the song is about Salvador sister saying that her heart could "pump"/love for the both of them, as one...just listen to the whole lyrics...pure love simply beautiful
