Eurovision 2020 - My Top 41

Here's my Top 41 for Eurovision 2020, the year that never was.

Now that I've finally made it to the end of the year ranking series, I guess I should give you guys a rundown of what's going to happen with the channel from now on. It's been a fun journey so far but this is only part one! The KZbinr rankings and Time spent singing the title rankings will continue plodding along on Wednesdays, that's not going to change. For Sundays, there are a couple standalone videos which I want to make to cap this series off. First is A compilation of my winners, from 1956-2021. Quite a few of my winners have changed since I made the videos for them, including a few which have changed even since I made that One year anniversary video. I also want to add a couple features to that video that'll make it a bit more interesting. Second is a ranking of all the years, based on quality of the songs. These two are bigger projects than my normal videos so I'm going to take every other Sunday off to make them. This means no video next Sunday! I also would like that little bit of a break aswell. After those videos come, I might stick to making one video every other Sunday for a while. There are videos I want to make, but they require more work than just making a ranking. Some of these will be more of my personal opinion rankings, maybe about stuff other than just the songs, others may be more stats kind of videos. I mentioned when I reached 100 subscribers that I would move on to making Rankings of each country's entries after I'm done with the year rankings. I would like to be in a situation where I can make all those videos before the next contest happens, and unless I really ramp up work or cancel some of the other videos I want to make over the next few weeks, that won't be this year. I still want to make those videos, but that might come between the 2022 and 2023 contests. There's also the question of what I'm going to do when I've finished the KZbinr Rankings. Well, I'll just make the Rankings by length of time singing the title every Wednesday. Of course, quickly I'll run out of them to make too, so what after then? I've got a few ideas. There are about 4 or so ideas for stats-related Eurovision video series I can make, and when the time comes I'll probably make one of each just as a trial to see how you guys like them, and how I like making them. Then I'll make a decision of how I want to divide the Wednesday slot. Thanks for reading that if you did, it feels great to make it to the end of a proper series! It also feels great knowing I don't have to write those long comments on each song for a while. They did get surprisingly time consuming!

YOU DID IT!!!!! My favorite this year was Think About Things, as it's literally my favorite Eurovision song of all time. Sad that 2020 couldn't happen, because it was on par with 2021 in terms of quality in my opinion.

We can only imagine what the results could have been but here's my top 10: 10th: Germany 9th: Italy 8th: Bulgaria 7th: Iceland 6th: Belgium 5th: Russia 4th: Malta 3rd: Sweden 2nd: Switzerland 1st: Denmark By the way, I understand your last spot for France. I'm less severe than you with my country's entry but after entries like "J'ai cherché", "Requiem", "Mercy" and even "Roi", this feels a bit weak.

Congratulations on making it to the end of these rankings! The journey itself was really fun (even though I popped in around 1993, hehe), and I liked hearing your thoughts. What was your favorite moment? And what did you learn about the contest from these rankings? As for 2020, while I'm saddened it was canceled, I didn't really miss most of these songs. It's a pity several countries couldn't compete for their first win (out of the main contenders, I wanted LTU to do so, even though it's not in my top ten), but I never really connected to many of them. I sometimes think that 2020 is considered strong because the contest was canceled, along with the fact we didn't have live performances that could sink some of these songs. Anyways, my top ten (honorable mentions to LAT, LTU, GER, SLO, and BLR): 1 pt: RUS 2 pt: SRB (I actually preferred Hasta la Vista to Loco Loco for a while. They're at the same level now, but it's interesting to see how Hurricane did a lyrical 180 on the two songs) 3 pt: GEO 4 pt: MLT 5 pt: DEN (Yes! It's so upbeat and wholesome and endearing) 6 pt: ITA (Fai Rumore is a beautiful song, though I found it really derivative when I first listened to it. I would've preferred Ringo Starr from Sanremo that year.--that was more interesting lyrically and musically) 7 pt: SUI 8 pt: BLG -- To be honest, my 3rd-5th places frequently change place, but Tears Getting Sober has won out the shuffle. I like the dark delicacy of the song, with its beautiful lyrics and sad soundscape. Despite the somber lyrics, Victoria makes it sound quite sweet, and I appreciate that very much. 10 pt: BEL -- Release Me actually restored my faith into this year's class--it's melancholic with a dark soundscape and a dreamy feel. For the last part, however, it toes the line between that and plain dreary; the repetitive lyrics don't help it in this case. The Wrong Place has that same sophisticated sound, but has a bit more energy to it. 12 pt: UKR -- But Solovey is fantastic, in terms of how it builds and the mix of electronic and ethnic. I like the storytelling in the lyrics, which makes one feel like they're in a folk legend. As for which one is more mainstream, I've heard arguments for both ways--Solovey follows the "verse-chorus" structure for songs, whereas Shum is more of a rave number. But both showcase Kateryna's white-voice vocals in an intriguing and new way, and I'm glad they were back for another run.

I don't know if I can really say I have a favourite moment of this journey, but it is really gratifying seeing so many people commenting on my videos now compared to at the beginning, when I uploaded the 1956 video in the afternoon, and the next morning I woke up to find that still no one at all had watched it. As for what I've learned, I've found out France's entry for 1974 would've been quite good, that Austria's preview video in 1992 is a wild ride, and Italy's is the exact opposite. I actually listened to the NQs of 1993 and 1996 which I hadn't before, and I've finally learned that actually, yes, Bistra voda is an amazing song.

A lot of people had their opinions shift with a lot of songs but some stay where they are. For me, Bulgaria has always been the 2020 winner by a huge margin, it just works for me in every way.

I think 2020 would have been a great Eurovision year. My winner is Belgium, and I'm very happy you mentioning it being your winner for a while as well. And yeah, Georgia, I loved Take Me as I Am, but with You, I wondered what had happened to the epic side of Tornike. Probably my biggest disappointment from the returning artists.

At first I thought the "like Cleopatra" lyric in Mata Hari was creative... until they repeated it a dozen times. My winner is Iceland and I really love to think it would've won. I have all of your top 3 really high too.

Well we made it! As with every other cliche comment on this year that has ever existed, it's unfortunate this year couldn't happen. It would've been a fairly descent set of songs in the final. As for the semi-finals, there were a very noticable set of duds that definitely bring the quality down. In my opinion, this year has the same quality as 2010, alright, but nothing out of the ordinary. Since the stage would've been the exact same as 2021, I think there were some clear opportunities for some songs to break out of their shells and take control live (Albania, Italy, Latvia). I'm actually getting kinda emotional writing this just thinking about all the artists that couldn't return to esc in 2021, whether it be their own choice, or... other reasons (looking at you Belarus) 41. Russia (unfathomably annoying) 40. Czech Republic 39. Germany (annoying x2) 38. Moldova (uninteresting) 37. France 36. Estonia 35. Serbia (annoying x3) 34. The Netherlands 33. Belgium 32. I personally think ESC 2020 was awfully weak, though that may be to do with how we haven’t seen these on the stage in Rotterdam. The only entries I properly love from this year are from 🇮🇸🇳🇴🇸🇪🇨🇭🇮🇪🇳🇱🇲🇹. 🇧🇬🇮🇹 are good but they took a very long time to grow on me. Still, I much prefer Victoria’s effort this year.
