His story is a true Eurovision fairy tale. He was about to quit music and get a regular job however his friend told him to enter this song (which he made in his bedroom) to the Croatian national final. His fiancé directed the music video along with sorting out the staging visuals. They put him on the bench as a reserve and luckily one singer pulled out (which is very unusual) And although his semi performance was a bit shaky he made it to the final and eventually won by a landslide. The Eurovision pre parties then gave him the opportunity to practice, improve and eventually sing in front of 180 million. Croatia really got behind him though and you can see by the budget on staging they really wanted that win.

This is not a pirate costume, but rather a Croatian national costume that probably doesn't exist in this exact form. Marko is a singer and songwriter who also writes a lot for others. He played a significant role in the album Ravenblack for the already well-known German dark rock band Mono Inc. His younger brother Martin is the bassist in the band. The album was even number 1 in the German album charts for a while. Yes, he donated the 50,000 euros he received from the government for second place to children's cancer clinics, even though he is not rich, but hopefully that will change soon.

The white lace they all have a lot is tradition from Croatia. It is called "Tabletić" or "Paška čipka". Mostly tablecloths of all sizes to put over ordinary tablecloth to make it more pretty! Google it 😜 Old ladies used to put them on CRT TVs when they came up! With one corner hanging on the screen in the middle 😂

That kaarija/baby lasagna award its basically the public vote winner of every year. In my opinion, the "real" winner. I dont like that we have juries. But well, you could always be proud of being people's winner, even if you didnt win the trophy. And those are usually the most remembered performances and they become "eurovision legends" which is, in my opinion, better that being the actual "eurovision winner". Of course there are eurovision legends who were also the winners of their year (alexander ryback, lordi, etc) but yeah, if I had to choose, id prefer being loved by the audience and remembered as the best of that year instead of simply winning the trophy. (No hate to Nemo, who I loved too, Im just saying my general opinion on how the favourite doesnt win many years because of juries, when they are clearly who managed to reach the most audience with their message, their song and performance was the most loved and that deserves the win, i think).

The pyro in the arena was actually pretty warm - you could feel it all the way up to the seats. And I loved that we all did the hand dance 😃 Baby Lasagna was my number 3 (2 if The Netherlands wasn't qualified). Nemo is still my number 1. But sometimes it's even better to come second (Käärijä shout out). Marko did a great job indeed. PS I think the first crazy ESC is way back in the 1970's... so I grew up with more or less crazy acts. I heard that he wasn't even one of the original finalists in his national selection contest and as a reserve entry, he only got into the main Croatian selection when another contestant withdrew. Since you've mentioned him, a fun fact: Jack Sparrow actually sailed the Adriatic sea before he was forced to abandon the pirate's life and join the East India Trading Company. So...yes, there is history of pirates here, Omiš pirates being the most famous. And, Eduardo Villanueva, who made a deal with the Spanish Monarchy to completely control the Caribbean was "Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea".

Couple of fascinating facts- this song shouldn't have even been in the Croatian National Final (Dora). It was song 26 of a top 25 but someone had to drop out & it ended up being in; winning the public vote & giving Croatia their best result ever at Eurovision since joining the competition back in 1993. HRT (the Croatian broadcaster) need to look at themselves and ask some serious questions about their selection process. Secondly, each country is given a price list of what 'elements' they want on stage. Smoke might cost €12k, wind machines €8k, pyro's €30k and each country has to fund it themselves. Obviously Croatia went all-out this year and blew a huge budget and bought everything! :)

Yes, we had pirates on the coast. Croatia have had powerful neighbours as Republic of Venice Relationship was not always friendly. Republic of Venice oft came and took resurses as wood or marble stone,salt etc... Other threat were Otoman empire. Bosnia and Herzegovina (neighbour land) was 400 years part of Otoman empire. Croatian pirates fight both of them on the land and the sea. On the land they were called hajduci or harambaša on the sea uskok. Uskoks were pirats, they attacked and plundered rich foreign ships on Adriatic sea. They shared oft their loot with inhabitants, so some of them were kind of heros as Robn Hood..Cities of Senj or Omiš on the coast were fortress of pirates..But BL outfit is ialso nfluenced by ethnic costumes from Istra, Croatia 🙂

I don't know who was the first to do a wacky, really entertaining and popular performance, it might have been Finland with Lordi in 2006 (you mentioned Verka, that was the year after, in 2007). It is basically the televote winner award. Eurovision voting is divided between jury voting (each country has their own jury wich consists of music industry professionals) and public televote. Both Käärijä last year and Baby Lasagna this year won the public televote but in the end they finished second, as when the jury votes and the public televotes were put together, Sweden last year and Switzerland this year had more points in total. (Actually Verka also finished second in 2007, but that year there was no jury voting, so the result came completely from the televote.)

The challenge is after all to stand out and stay memorable with a 3 minutes performance in a 4 hour TV show Mogst 40 contrstants. So I think that grew over time. For your title for the spectacle/crowd pleaser, I rewatched some of eurovision 2004 and 2005, these years are relevant since 2004 was the first year that the people had full power and the stratergy for winning started to change. In 2004 they were still pretty shy but began dipping their toes in the water, in 2005 things kinda went of the rails in the best way possible. Personally I'd go with Zdob si zdub who represented Moldova in 2005, or Lordi cuz they won in 2006. Edit: Alf Poier (Austria 2003) was WILD. Nemo is just some randome pop song that is good, like you can find every year some hit and everyone forget about that. Nothing special. Since you’re new to eurovision contest, its all about who is the best, and can make hit that can be recognised. Its not about what song is better, and second of all Croatia was better, and second of all if we are going to talk about “best” song, in terms of commercial songs, than its Ukraine and France. Nemo won cause of the direction that judges were given and nothing more.

Lordi is probably the first to introduce the really wacky, but also high quality performance. There were wacky performances before, but they never ended too high in the ranking. In 2006, however, there were no jury votes, only televotes, which allowed the more goofy, fan favorite acts to end up high. So that's how Lordi won. And I'm pretty convinced this started a trend of countries sending in wacky, energetic songs, like Verka Serduchka the next year, in the hopes they could replicate Lordi's success.
